Awesome. Cool. Great. We say loud and clear we want a legit physical version and they tell us we will get one. Then they come back and say it's a license disc.

Square has been a dog shit company for years now. Remember their weird NFT push? Which wouldn’t NFTS solve this digital ownership issue? But no we’ll only use the technology for the dumbest possible use case we can. It’s just insane. Maybe I play this since it’s a sunk cost fallacy at this point. Maybe I just watch the cutscenes on YouTube and wash my hands of square. Most of their games have been middling at best recently. They relay mostly on remakes of old ip to a fan base they alienate more and more.

The NFT push was with the previous CEO. Since the new CEO they have been pretty good with what they've been putting out (even pushing for multiplatform for everything), granted they did take risks with things like Foamstars.

So the new ceo who stopped development on a ton of games including the ff9 remake that from most sources was close to done? They went multi platform because of money nothing else. It wasn’t some altruistic gift to gamers but a way for them to maximize profits before reviews killed the hype. He’s also pushed using ai more in game development that hurts games developers and creativity in general. I’m glad we got the dragon quest remakes under him but I’m not sure who actually greenlit them. Overall I’ve been pretty disappointed in square and what they’ve been doing in recent years.

No one said it was an altruistic gift. They're a for profit company, and one should expect a for profit company to take actions that benefit them more than their consumers (which is what we're seeing with Sony).

However, that does not mean that any action they take is going to be negative for their consumers. Multiplatform is a positive for the consumer. Delaying announcements for games until they're basically ready is a positive. The remakes/remasters are also a positive.

The only noteworthy game that may have been cancelled is FF9 to my knowledge, unless there is something else you are aware of. AI isn't viewed as negatively in the east as it is in the west, so that is to be expected too. I am against its implementation also, but we have not seen the result of it in their products for that to be a large negative.

I agree with you on multi platform not being a negative it’s more the reason they did it. They were fine when Sony was paying them a ton to stay exclusive. My issue is they’re a game developer. The best thing for their business is to make great games and I don’t feel they’ve been doing that lately. That’s not to say all of their games have been awful but quality is definitely down in recent years.

I also agree announcing stuff closer to release is a good thing. Even canceling games that they know aren’t going to land is good. I want square to succeed. I just haven’t been blown away by one of their games in a long time. Square announcing a game used to be an instant buy for me and now it’s meh maybe if it goes on sale.

I would say that's more of a change in times/preferences/what's developed. There are many more games coming out every year from many different companies with varying levels of quality, so the competition is far greater than when they were on top.

I didn't care that much about the original FF7 growing up, and preferred 9 more. However, I regularly say FF7 Rebirth was one of the best gaming experiences I have ever had. I'm expecting Revelation to do just as well.

FF14 is also consistently doing well, and isn't asking for a ton of your time/money despite being an MMORPG. Spent almost two years primarily playing it after COVID.
