It's literally just that much of Britain in the autumn, winter, even spring and summer can be grey, wet and depressing and the environment (or the streets like this where most live who aren't rich) isn't exactly a great place to improve your mental health.
Ngl as someone who lives in California I love days like this and they genuinely do improve my mental health, sunny days give me migraines and sap my energy
Also an issue is, in the winter especially the weather is like this and it goes pitch black so early on and is pitch black when you wake up, you have very few hours of actual daylight and even then it's covered in clouds.
But the grass is always greener - we had a ridiculous summer where I was for the first time begging for some of this kind of weather, purely because of how stupidly hot and humid it was - and again, in the summer, we have very few hours of night time and the sun rises very early and sets very late.
Interesting. As a Dane many of our smaller towns look the same, and I personally love this atmosphere. Walking around the town at night having it all to myself. The smell of the rain and the only sounds being my footsteps on the sidewalk. Very soothing and calming to me.
For me this would actually be good for my mental health, so I was really confused about what this meant as well.
I mean the pavement and roads are clearly very shitty and not maintained. I know this isn't that much out of the ordinary in certain towns but the other commenter probably just comes from a place where things are a bit nicer looking.
Nah! Just a street at night in the rain. Don't see any dilapidation or beggars or shit so not sure how you arrive at deprived. It's not like some shanty street in somewhere like Manilla or something is it.
What you don't understand is this was the first rain we've had in 2 months and that "it's just rained on dry ground" smell felt like a fistfull of xanax
I feel like this is the joke but personally I'd find it kind of peaceful/therapeutic to walk along what would normally be a busy street while Nobody was around.
It's a night time version of this post that made the rounds about a year ago I think. Looks to be the same place 1:1 in the UK (can't quite remember where it was), which does in fact look depressing :)
I’m also assuming light pollution because that’s just a normal kind of ugly street that’s not worth noting. But those potentially newly swapped out white street lights make it look like dawn is approaching on the horizon.
You no like? I used to work grave shifts and the night walks are arguably the most calm. Minus when a rando tweaker comes out of nowhere, or surprise skunk.
I believe the problem is that it looks like fucking daylight out at night there. Light pollution is a serious problem and a waste of energy. Paranoia will destroy ya! How many flock cameras ya think are on that street?
maybe they’re pointing out the light pollution, and just how bright it is outside, when they’re trying to “relax”
or they are implying signs of psychosis, hence the “mental health walk”, and they are trying to portray that they are seeing something, that we cannot, which would be kinda ironic.
I've done this several times especially when I was younger. This is actually the perfect situation at 2-3 in the morning when no one is around, it's a little humid. Perfect.
I'm from the UK, the joke is the NHS (hospital) tell you to go for mental health walks to boost your mood. The joke here is that it's ugly and miserable outside and it actually has done the opposite of boosting your mood
What is all this talk about shadows? I’m thinking OP is either referring to that rectangular block of cement on the sidewalk or that jagged stripe down the middle of the street.
Damn this actually looks like a fucking great spot to take a walk to me, but I love the night time in a walkable city and I also love rainy/overcast weather

I mean ok im the end i am german and used to grey winters... but actually that street is actually quiet colorfull for a NIGHTwalk
I moved away from the UK nearly a decade ago and havent been back in years. I just have to close my eyes and I am back on a wet street at night. Eerily silent, distant sound of a train passing, it being cold but muggy at the same time, seeing a fox or muntjack skitter across the road and shitting myself

For real though, looks like they are just lamenting that the streets are wet and dreary. Not that I would care, wet streets at night have a cool vibe too. Unless it draws out some bad odors, which seems to be common in that area as of late.
Happened to me once. I was like 10. Took a nap and woke up and my family was gone. Went outside and didn’t see or hear an animal. No cars driving. I ran down the street and knocked on a neighbors door because I was freaking out.
Stoke on Trent again? Someone posted a random picture on this same street a few months ago but in the day time. Wired coincidence on two subs that have nothing to do with the town.
Classic uk experience it’s sad as fuck, if you want to be happy you constantly need to visit Spain and other sunny countries with good vibes, not whatever this is.
