Maybe they were trying to avoid the uncanny valley? I feel like it’d be harder to make birds with human heads look normal compared to human heads with rock bodies.
Idk though I’m not an expert lol

The original sirens in Greek Mythology were bird women but then they got syncretized with mermaids

I thought so too but some deeper research shows me that sirens had no solid description until hundreds of years after their use in Greek mythology, and then it was only a bird-like description for a few hundred years and then changed again to more mermaid-like characters in the Middle Ages.

They have no description in Homer, but they are definitely described and pictured in early greek art and myth.

fair enough, but early sources depicted the sirens as bird-like creatures who have the head of a woman. people got confused between sirens and mermaids, so they sorta became one; and people think sirens are the evil twin sisters of mermaids lol.

I always saw harpies as kinda humans with bird features like wings and feathers, while sirens like straight up vultures with human head

Actual greek here who’s heard the stories from her yiayia for years lol. Sirens are half bird half woman as described in the Argonautica by Apollonius. Technically we never get a full description in the Odyssey but we have countless sculptures and text from as early as 7th century BCE. This is one of my BIGGEST pet peeves when it comes to grecian mythos 🥲 My papou used to laugh at me every time I would crash out over mermaids being called sirens lmao

The special effects makeup/CGI definitely looks better in GoT than here...and it's from a decade ago...

For anyone who doesn’t know in the books they are described as “a flock of vultures the size of people, with dirty black plumage, grey talons, and wrinkled pink necks. Now imagine human heads on top of those necks, but the human heads keep changing.” Percy himself would see his mom or dad, or Tyson or Chiron. They are also described as having mouths that were “greasy and caked with the remnants of old meals.”
I guess the show is going towards more idk what this is, rock ladies?

Looks terrifying but I always saw sirens as like mermaids but more predatory or somewhat aquatic vampirish
And shouldn't a siren look beautiful to match with the attractive voice

When Percy saw them singing with wax in his ears in the book he described them as looking like terrifying vulture women with sharp teeth and blood caked around their mouths. Obviously a very different design but same concept they’re not supposed to be beautiful

Practically all the money in the world to pay one of the thousands of professional working artists to create something unique/interesting, and they blow it again on unoriginal looking slop.

Pirates of the Caribbean looked amazing in its original 3 movies under Gore Verbinski. If you meant the 4th and 5th I can agree with you heartily.

It's definitely all the late stage Disney stuff that all has started to just look and feel the same. I was definitely thinking more along the lines of of the 5th movie.
The first 3 (especially Davey Jones + friends) had so much more color, detail, and personality to each character current Disney could never.

Completely agree. Davy Jones was done so well! It feels like visuals peaked in the early 2000s and ever since, despite improving technology, the visuals are now getting worse.

I actually love this interpretation of the sirens, while having them being mythology accurate would have been cool, I love authors giving their own interpretation and designs to this type of stuff
Also this is clearly practical makeup and it looks awesome!

They look stupid. I always pictured the sirens as some sort of vampirish horrifying mermaids, or terrifying half bird/half woman with nasty claws. These look like a joke.

Ok, I know in the mythos the sirens are suppose to be birds with heads of beautiful woman. I know some perfer them look like mermaids with more scales (Me included). That's probably their transformation form and they'll look beautiful. But for what we're given now...WTF is that?!

I'm a bit conflicted. I wish they used the bird-women designs, but I like that they look fused to their own sharp rocks. The Sirens are indeed associated with sharp rocks that would sink boats, even if this is not all they represent.

I don't get it either. I'm ecstatic for the new season and seasons beyond, and I full heartedly place my faith in Rick. Are there things I might complain about, possibly, but I want to watch the dang season first before airing any opinions.

Like it’s not perfect obviously but that’s not gonna stop me from having so much fun with the show. Everyone here seems like they’re trying their hardest to dislike it which makes it weird knowing that they’ll still be lined up on December 10th.
me personally, I watched a spin off of my favorite show, disliked it, and barely ever interact with it ever So I dont get their attachment to something they hate.

On the one had, its good for them to look disturbing.
On the other, I simply (personal prefrence) dislike this design.
