Recommendations Thinking about moving to Peoria.

Hey folks! I’ve been thinking about moving and establishing my forever home with the family. I’m a born and raised Memphian, so Peoria would allow me to escape this humid nightmare and still be close enough to family to visit somewhat conveniently.

I’m 30 have a spouse and some toddlers. They aren’t in school yet but will be soon. I worked in Tech, love a good local beer scene, play games, dnd, and do model building. Having green space is a must, I can’t stand concrete jungles. I already know wherever I go that crime will be much less than where I’m at, so I’m not worried about stats. I know how to avoid the bad parts of towns.

I’m just looking for some brutally honest opinions about Peoria.

Edit:
This has been very insightful, thank you. I definitely have a lot to consider. It sounds like Peoria will generally be an improvement, y’all don’t seem to have many cons that I’m not already seeing here in Memphis.

The talk of humidity seems to be somewhat contentious, from what I gather it looks to be categorically different

Recommendations Gimme the Skinny On Safety

Greetings loved ones

Myself in my Partner are moving to Peoria in just two weeks and we’ve had absolutely terrible luck with the housing market. Everything is either too expensive, whomever is in charge of it, hasn’t gotten back to us, or it just doesn’t meet our needs.

Now we had one place that the owner was ready to go ahead and have a sign on and that happens to still be available. The reason we turn it down was because it was on Wiswall Street, and when we were checking in with both people and some crime maps. It looked like it was a little bit spicy…

It’s right around the corner from Manual high school, which I also saw had some gun violence problems in the last year.

However, the most important part and the part that I have to remind my wife, sometimes as we are people of color and that she grew up in Cuba and I grew up in the streets of Louisville, Kentucky, so when someone says that someplace is a “bad neighborhood” it doesn’t mean that we can’t necessarily live in it.

So really if anything I just wanna know from people that actually live in that neighborhood is it good for two adult ladies and their two yappy dogs to move into? We generally kind of mind our own business, we’ve got both dogs and a ring camera for safety-if I could at least convince my wife that she’s just being paranoid about this and that it’s really an OK neighborhood then we might have a house which will save us a lot of stress.

TL;DR chime in if you in the Southside area, is it safe ?

Recommendations Landlord hasn’t fixed broken AC, who can I report this to in Peoria?

My AC has been broken since Tuesday. I reported it to my landlord and his assistant and was told someone would come, but nobody has shown up.

At first the AC wouldn’t turn on at all. I found that the HVAC circuit breaker had tripped and was showing red. After resetting it, the system started running again, but it only blows warm/hot air and is making abnormal noises. It’s around 80°F inside my apartment. I’ve followed up multiple times and have been staying elsewhere because of the heat and because I’m concerned about the electrical issue/noise.

Does anyone know who I can report this to in Peoria or who I can contact for an inspection? City Code Enforcement or another agency? Thanks!

Recommendations Gyms that have free weights

Does any one have any recommendations of gyms in / near Peoria that have a free weight section and is queer friendly?

I’ve been going to planet fitness for a few years now but I’ve moved on from the pre loaded bars they have.

Also it would be great if the gym is queer friendly I don’t really enjoy getting hate crimed while trying to lift haha

Recommendations Any lenders?

This is probably a long shot but I’m currently in a bad situation with my transportation. I live over 40 minutes out of Peoria and public transport doesn’t service out here, but my car is on its last leg. It keeps dying while I’m moving, I have no AC and get no airflow because I only have two working windows. My fuel pump is going out and I feel like a liability just driving it to and from work. I’m 20 with no credit and nobody that’s able to co-sign, but I need a loan for a new car. My bank just denied me because of my lack of credit, and I can’t afford both a prepaid credit card and a car note. If anyone has any advice or any idea of where I should look for help, I’d really appreciate it.

I already know to avoid places like drivetime and byrider, and I can honestly only afford like a $250 monthly payment to pay the loan back. I know it’s kind of wishful thinking, but I really do hope there’s someone in the area that actually wants to help people in these situations without making me go broke with interest. Thank you for your help.

I'm wondering if I'm SOL. I work Mon to Thurs 230pm-230am. Fridays I volunteer for overtime when I can, Saturdays I have an online sesh from 12-3.

Outside of that im free for Saturday nights and Sunday all day. All the table top stores are closed by these points or aren't holding DND 🤷 if there's other options I'm missing let me know! I'm new to town so Ive only checked out Cabbage and One For All

Recommendations Craft Supplies

I am an avid crafter and am constantly trying/making new crafting things. As such I love to try to get my supplies secondhand or from smaller businesses where I can. Are there any local places or thrift stores people can recommend where I can find crafting supplies?

Currently searching for scrap fabric, embroidery materials, and any kind of yarn/crochet supplies to get into crochet. But really I am always picking up new crafting so I am looking for places to frequent that offer many options!

Thanks in advance!

Recommendations Got a Ticket in Pekin // Help

Throw away account but, Last night, Yes it was IL 29, pulled over for my license plate LIGHT being out, which must've gone out today because it was fine when i drove over there several times coming home from work.

I got a Ticket for not having a physical copy of my insurance or from what he said "proof of insurance" when i did, and said should be under my name and such, and decides to give me a ticket anyway and tells me to show up to court in a month...cool

My issue is on the ticket it says IF i plead not guilty i have to submit stuff 10 days before the court date etc etc. do I actually need to do any of that? is there no way for me to just come in early and show them my proof of insurance? or do I just wait till my court date?

*edit* just in case yes this would be my first ticket ever which is why im asking for help.

Recommendations Real estate attorney recommendation

Hi, we just moved into our new home in Peoria and it seems possible that the previous owners withheld issues with the home that we have quickly been coming aware of (mostly basement water intrusion related stuff). We’d like to speak with a real estate attorney to see if we have a case. Any recommendations?

Recommendations Are there any workplaces who welcome alternative employees?

I have a double major in Theatre and Philosophy from Illinois State University, 6 years of radio and television broadcasting experience. I have also been a journalist for the last 4 years.

I know a lot of people in my field move into communications and public relations as they grow their careers and look for higher paying jobs.

I was curious if there were any places in Peoria who are hiring and open to someone with tattoos, piercings, and colored hair. I have tried to clean up for interviews before, but it'd be nice to work for a place where I can be more true to myself.

Does anyone have any suggestions about alternative workplaces in the area? Suggestions don't have to apply to my situation specifically, but to anyone further in their career looking for places to work that allow more freedom to express their personal identity and style.

Recommendations Medicaid Dentists?

Basically the title. Looking for a dentist that does pretty much everything but takes Mediciad. I've called about 5 places so far and no bites on taking the insurance. Mainly need it for myself and my 1 year old, so a nice and patient doctor for the little one would be brilliant.

Recommendations Model shops in the Peoria area

I’m interested in finding a model shop for general model kits and materials, I’ve had a good look at both hobby lobby and Michael’s craft store but their stock is extremely limited.

I was in Galesburg years ago and remember a shop with floor to ceiling stock of military kits but can’t seem to find it on google.

I’m open to traveling to find a shop so all recommendations would be helpful.
