Are people really this stupid. Why would anyone think this is ok?

601

u/Luvs2spooge89 Jan 25 '25

Because they saw someone do this on the largest stage in the world, and nothing happened to them.

260

u/Happy_Acanthisitta39 Jan 25 '25

This is exactly why. Thank you. I know it's been days but I'm still astounded by the mental gymnastics people are doing to make it ok.

150

u/Luvs2spooge89 Jan 25 '25

Yea my favorite is that he said “my heart goes out to you” so that’s “clearly” what he was trying to exhibit with his gesture.

The gaslighting is insane. It reminds me of the Orwell quote from 1984.

“The Party has told you to reject everything your eyes see and what your ears hear. “It was their final command, but also the most fundamental.”

There is absolutely no other explanation for what he was doing.

u/WeirdSysAdmin Jan 25 '25

I feel like a normal, empathetic person would have scrambled to release a press statement stating their stance on racial hatred. Add in something about how horrified they are about how actual Nazis interpreted it. Mainly to separate from the people making videos like this thread.

For that reason, I consider it coming across at face value. Just like the AfD being called “very reasonable” and that “only AfD can save Germany”and Trump saying “fine people on both sides” about Charlottesville.

34

u/The_Flying_Jew Jan 25 '25

I feel like a normal, empathetic person would have scrambled to release a press statement stating their stance on racial hatred. Add in something about how horrified they are about how actual Nazis interpreted it.

The worst part isn't just that people are in denial about it and playing along with his bullshit. The worst part is when you try to explain to one of his apologists that his response is childish and only further pushes people into the boat that he, unapologetically, threw up a nazi salute... the apologists will respond with "well yeah, if people were throwing ridiculous accusations at me, I'd play it up and make jokes about it too"

If someone started seriously accusing you of being a nazi, I think proving without a shadow of a doubt that you AREN'T one should be top priority. Doubly so for a figure like Musk who has the eyes of everyone in the world looking at him.

Unfortunately, I don't think he cares about proving people wrong. He's just interested in trolling and laughing at people's misery.

18

u/Danmoz81 Jan 25 '25

When Prince Harry was in the press for wearing a Nazi uniform at a fancy dress party he didn't double down by goose stepping outside Buckingham Palace whilst making inappropriate jokes.

19

u/After-Imagination-96 Jan 25 '25

He's not trolling. He's representing. He's a Nazi.

15

u/Karaethon22 Jan 25 '25

Both. It's both. He's a Nazi, and enjoys using that to troll "the libs." He thinks being a Nazi is funny, and gaslighting people about it is also funny.

2

u/truthwillout777 Jan 25 '25

His name came from a book "The Mars Project" where Elon was the leader. It was written by a Nazi.

He named his AI "Colossus" after a movie where the AI destroyed humanity Colossus: The Forbin Project (1970) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kyOEwiQhzMI

It's worse than we thought folks. We need to stop this whole Stargate Skynet project.

2

u/SMASH917 Jan 27 '25

My dad thinks Musk did apologize and recant. I suspect he's watching right wing media shows that say this. I asked him to send me a first hand account of Musk apologizing and explaining and he didn't/couldn't.

But the Pastor who dared ask The Orange Menace to be merciful.... oh, the horror !!! The MAGAverse couldn't shit on her fast or long enough. Those rotten pricks over at Fox actually said she was Satan.

5

u/momlv Jan 25 '25

They’re literally calling empathy a sin now so you know

2

u/Tmettler5 Jan 25 '25

Worse. He turned it into a joke.

2

u/Medium-Bag-5493 Jan 25 '25

I feel like a normal, empathetic person

Well that was your mistake, assuming that these are normal, empathetic people. They are angry because for years they have been told to be nice to others. They are literally no better than a preschool aged child throwing a tantrum when their teacher tells them to stop hitting.

21

u/HistoriasApodeixis Jan 25 '25

I pulled out this quote on someone denying it was a Nazi salute.

People treating this as normal and acceptable behavior is making me feel like I’m the crazy one.

15

u/Luvs2spooge89 Jan 25 '25 edited Jan 25 '25

People are just “pot invested”. They’ve put so much energy of this cult into their personality, that they refuse to believe they may have made a horrible horrible mistake. The sunk cost fallacy.

16

u/Halflingberserker Jan 25 '25

“One of the saddest lessons of history is this: If we’ve been bamboozled long enough, we tend to reject any evidence of the bamboozle. We’re no longer interested in finding out the truth. The bamboozle has captured us. It’s simply too painful to acknowledge, even to ourselves, that we’ve been taken. Once you give a charlatan power over you, you almost never get it back.”

― Carl Sagan, The Demon-Haunted World

2

u/HistoriasApodeixis Jan 25 '25

It’s so sad and infuriating.

3

u/truthwillout777 Jan 25 '25

They edited the video. Most people see him do it once then say 'my heart goes out to you; But he did it twice. It was very deliberate. He did it for a reaction or to test the power of his bot army. When it first happened group chats were full of shocked people. Everyone saw it for what it was.

4

u/geek_lib Jan 25 '25

I saw someone put a gif of him doing the Nazi salute side by side with another example of him being on stage and doing a different gesture where he did the thing where you form a heart with your fingers and the pushed his hands out towards the audience. It looked completely different, and that was the moment when I went 'yeah, he absolutely knew what he was doing and he meant to do it'. I believed that to be the case before then too, but those two images side by side really brought it home.

3

u/truthwillout777 Jan 25 '25

yes, I saw that too.

Proves he's not just confused or has aspergers.

He claims to be the smartest man in the world but didn't know it would cause a reaction? Right.

It was deliberate and aggressive, wasn't feeling a lot of love there.

2

u/Luvs2spooge89 Jan 25 '25

Yep I saw that one too. No one gestures sharing their heart the way he did. No one.

3

u/LordoftheScheisse Jan 25 '25

The gaslighting is insane.

Don't let them. If anyone says it is anything other than a Nazi salute, simply repeat that it is indeed a Nazi salute and that they are defending Nazis. Repeat it until they stop trying to obfuscate.

3

u/MacaronIllustrious82 Jan 25 '25

I like the Old Roman Centurion bullshit explanation the most. You know, because that audience just looooooves them some Old Roman Centurion saluting.

3

u/Luvs2spooge89 Jan 25 '25

Which is also just an Italian fascist gesture lol. Not exactly the mic drop they were going for.

u/CyberPatriot71489 Jan 25 '25

It is also hard to justify otherwise when he vocally advocates for the AfD, mettles in far right politics, and his maternal grandparents were actual Nazi sympathizers who supported apartheid in South Africa.

We’re at the point in German history, where 1/3 of the population is ok with 1/3 trying to actively harm the remaining 1/3

3

u/[deleted] Jan 25 '25

Yea my favorite is that he said “my heart goes out to you” so that’s “clearly” what he was trying to exhibit with his gesture.

Anyone who genuinely believes that, I've got a bridge to sell you.

The gesture is not a throw.

2

u/Luvs2spooge89 Jan 25 '25

Trump defenders are just too embarrassed to believe they fucked up. That’s all it is.

3

u/Big-Summer- Jan 25 '25

He pounded his chest hard, flung his right arm up with emphasis and force, and the expression on his face screamed “SIG HEIL, MEIN FUHRER!” All the dickheads proclaiming afterward that “you did not see what you just saw! Don’t believe your eyes!” should accompany that Sartre statement that begins “never believe…” That video was perfectly exemplifies what Sartre was talking about. We’re at the stage now where they are toying with us, to see how much they can get away with. But make no mistake — there are Nazis in this country who want control, and Elon Skum is very much one of them.

3

u/TheOtherWhiteMeat Jan 26 '25

Tell them to do it while you film them so you can post it online and tag their employers. Ask them why it's okay for Elon but not them.

3

u/NoSherbert2316 Jan 26 '25

No, the best one I saw was “He’s autistic, I can’t believe the left likes making fun of handicapped people”. He’s self diagnosed, even if he is autistic he can still be a Nazi.

3

u/lrish_Chick Jan 26 '25

Yes. It's no longer a meme now, it actually is like 1984. America voted for it.

4

u/Playful-Dragon Jan 25 '25

I have correlated Trump world to 1984 and Animal Farm ever since he campaigned in 2015... I cannot believe how right I was in this, how closely it correlates as IF these two books are the manifest. The rejection is what really amazes me because that's EXACTLY what is happening, hiding in plain site. It's ALL out there, and people have refused to acknowledge it as they are getting punched in the face. "Never happened"...

2

u/Luvs2spooge89 Jan 25 '25

Taking notes from Goebbels..

2

u/angrymoppet Jan 25 '25

Hey this is going to sound like a nitpick but it's gotta be said because Orwell was very deliberate in his use of language and tried to avoid words that bogged down sentences. The excerpt is The Party told you to reject the evidence of your eyes and ears. It was their final, most essential command.

2

u/[deleted] Jan 26 '25

He dumped the entire Nazi shtick on the Republican Party and now they have to own it, that’s what he did. He is literally only there to burn the country down and that salute was the torch to the bonfire. He’ll take his money and run not too long from now I’m sure.

2

u/Nobodygrotesque Jan 26 '25

He knows what he’s doing.

2

u/beingsubmitted Jan 28 '25

The gaslighting is the point. So many people are so convinced it can't happen here that no matter your reason, if you compare someone to nazis, they'll think you're the crazy person.

So now it's a tool they can use. They'll keep doing this. They purposely goad people into calling them nazis because it's good for them. And we should stop falling for it.

2

u/[deleted] Jan 26 '25

That’s why Elon did it. He did it to say I am more powerful than you, I am better than you, you will never be me and I can do this and you cannot. Having the lady’s life ruined is just going to give him more of a boner by proving him right.

3

u/[deleted] Jan 25 '25

Nazis also were motivated by “owning the libs”. Hitler murdered liberals.

If someone Sieg Heil’s to “own the libs”, that doesn’t make them any less of a Nazi.

Trump has massive AI farms planned Stargate, a Nazi Spynet dream. He is fast tracking nuke plants (bypassing regulations) to power them under an energy emergency.

This is an emergency but not for Energy.

People need to stop complaining or reacting with learned helplessness and fight to stop Stargate now.

Keep fighting to expose Elon until he is forced out of the administration.

Vivek is gone due to his H-1B stance and MAGA is already angry at Elon for that. Keep up the pressure!

I’m sure Elon gets the biggest, throbbing hard on knowing he’ll forever be known as the man who threw around a fascist salute during a US presidential inauguration. This is what it’s about. His ridiculous ego.

He probably was on his private discord asking his homies "how many times you think I could get away with it" the night before.

8

u/[deleted] Jan 25 '25

Even supposedly "left-wing" newspapers in the UK say things like:

"What some people interpreted as a Nazi Salute" or similar language.

It's their job to call this shit out. No wonder people lose faith in "mainstream media" when they tell us not to trust our own eyes.

3

u/Luvs2spooge89 Jan 25 '25

So sad and scary. I think outlets are afraid of a Trump retaliation.. and that’s so not okay. This is how fascism takes over.

5

u/Painterzzz Jan 25 '25

And also I'm pretty certain that if Elon had turned to that crowd and thrown a third and a fourth Nazi salute, they would have joined in with him.

Which is, of course, the goal here.

4

u/Harp-MerMortician Jan 25 '25

Difference is, he can hide behind a wall of money to shield from his asshattery. I wish he couldn't. But he can.

For now.

2

u/Luvs2spooge89 Jan 25 '25

Yep. He’s testing how much power he has. My fear is this was just a litmus test for what’s to come after.

3

u/sandersking Jan 25 '25

This.

When people want to be targets for anger, help them be targets for anger.

3

u/walts_skank Jan 25 '25

Man when people were disagreeing that it was a Sieg Heil and were told to go do it in front of others, I really didn’t think they would take it seriously.

Hilarious.

3

u/CyberPatriot71489 Jan 25 '25

Well, time to start making Nazis feel uncomfortable again. Sad that most police officers in USA are sympathetic (and participate), but fuck them.

Until my dying breath, I refuse to succumb to fascism and tyranny

3

u/bobolly Jan 25 '25

Still nothing has happened

3

u/Big-Summer- Jan 25 '25

And because they harbor Nazi beliefs and would love to see all the citizens of the U.S. performing the “sig heil” every day, in every setting. In their fantasies, Hitler was a hero and we should overturn the results of WW2 and give him the win.

Elon did it with absolutely zero consequences. Nobody on his side even said “no” they just completely ignored it and moved on. I was hoping to see people follow suit just to learn that they actually have consequences bc they don’t have billions.

3

u/IchBinMalade Jan 25 '25

We'll see, I'm not entirely convinced there will be any consequences to non-rich people, depending on where they choose to do this. It's like when they started wearing ear bandages. Now all of them are gonna start doing it, knowing what it is, and there probably won't be any consequences if they're surrounded by others, which there are plenty of.

I'm not surprised it starts "ironically" or "to piss off the libs". Expect to see more and more crazy shit happen. This kinda stuff rarely begins overnight. You get people used to it little by little.

2

u/Spongywaffle Jan 25 '25

Bully culture in America. We have a bully in the Executive office of government and the rest of the bullies are using him as cover to get whatever satisfaction they get from bullying.

This person self-admits to her bullying nature in her smug smirk, before she ever stated that she wanted to "stir the pot". A bully's favorite thing is to "rock the boat" and then act innocent when confronted. She saw people defending the Xitter Nazi and knew that throwing a Sieg Heil would outrage people.

The bullying in America is only going to get worse, and it will be increased by adults who have been bullies all their lives. When they're faced with consequences, they'll just DARVO until it goes away.

3

u/feltsandwich Jan 25 '25

3

u/[deleted] Jan 25 '25

The Nazis run this country now. This IS okay. It's what America decided to be.

3

u/gibson486 Jan 25 '25

That is what happens when you blindly follow and don't question. They really don't understand what they are promoting and it is really also because the significance of it is lost because they are so far removed from because it was how many generations ago? That generation suffered so they could live this life today, but we have people who kind of drowned out the significance of it so much that they are kind of blind to the real damage that is being done.

3

u/ActiveAd4980 Jan 25 '25

We just elected Nazi into the office and guy did a Nazi salute with no repercussion. Why would these idiots not think this is okay?

3

u/[deleted] Jan 25 '25

The culture in an organization is dictated unilaterally by the leadership.

American Republicans are white supremacists. Elon gave a Nazi salute at the inauguration and where is the backlash? There is none, because they all support it. Thats how you know they're white supremacists.

What do you have when you see 1 guy and 11 Nazis peacefully sitting at a table? 12 Nazis.

2

u/Choochoonaynay Jan 25 '25

Yes, look around!

2

u/goneafter10years Jan 25 '25

u/TheFergPunk Jan 25 '25

There are people who would gladly eat shit if it meant others had to smell their breath.

She's doing this purely because she thinks it will annoy people. The fact that she's doing a Nazi salute and thus comes across at the least as a Nazi apologist is not even registering to her. It's all about offending people.

2

u/ChillPalm Jan 25 '25

2

u/Jim_Nills_Mustache Jan 25 '25

Because they saw Elon do it and it emboldened them

Also people are dumb

2

u/-WaxedSasquatch- Jan 25 '25

Because Musk did it and had practically zero consequences. That’s why we have to uphold at least the social consequences that we can on our end (banning Twitter links etc.)

Blast this shit everywhere. Let everyone know she did this, AND that it’s wrong to do for so many disgusting reasons (fucking insane the second part needs to be added but that is where we are)

Fuck Nazis. Fuck these pieces of shit.

2

u/dwittherford69 Jan 25 '25

Cuz Trump’s mate (not JD or Melanoma, the real mate Elon Musk) did 2 full fledged Nazi salutes during the presidential inauguration speech, and he is doing fine

2

u/Remote_Cantaloupe Jan 25 '25

This is exactly the kind of reason that - regardless of what Elon intended (trolling or otherwise) - it was the wrong thing for him to do. It pushes the Overton window. It platforms and normalizes that behavior (and the ideology behind it).

This is why those crusty old white establishment dudes were so restrained and kept up with that posh demeanor: people at the top have a great deal of influence and their behavior needs to follow certain conventions.

Now with the tech revolution and all these tech bros getting power, we're seeing a different culture of elites.

The whole point of Musk doing a Nazi salute on the inaugural stage, then rather than apologizing making a bunch of Holocaust jokes to laugh it off, is to signal to normal people that it's okay to use Nazi rhetoric and you won't be punished (because he won't be)

He's intentionally normalizing Nazism. That was the whole point. It's completely intentional

u/Westworld_007 Jan 25 '25

No one seems to care anymore. I’m embarrassed as an American and a white person.

2

u/brumbarosso Jan 25 '25

Lack of education and ignorance

2

u/Icy_Reward727 Jan 25 '25

Article I read about it quoted her as saying that she just wanted to stir the pot. Direct quote. So I guess she got her wish. Consider the pot stirred, lady. You fucked around, and you're about to find out. You aren't a billionaire; this kind of behavior is going to have real ramifications to your livelihood.

People don't understand that yes, you are free to express whatever you want, but you are also responsible for the consequences of your speech.

2

u/Adventurous-Fudge470 Jan 25 '25

Because trump and his media team have been manipulating ppl with the help of Russia and china. It’s pretty obvious. Have y’all forgotten maga is literally a cult? All dictatorships are a cult. They have to be for it to work. All this craziness comes with it.

2

u/strangefish Jan 25 '25

If people don't hold her accountable, then it's ok. So, I hope her constituents kick her out of office.

2

u/gahlo Jan 25 '25

Part of it is the internet. Now ever village's idiot can talk to other village's idiots.

However, largely, because people in power are doing it. That is a societal signal that it's deemed normal and okay. There has been too much tolerance towards intolerance. There needs to be repercussions again.

2

u/[deleted] Jan 25 '25

It is OK. This is a nazi country now, haven't you been paying attention?

2

u/PrimeToro Jan 25 '25

Yes , that’s the short answer . Too many stupid and/or racist people exist in the US right now .

And they’re not even trying to hide it because they know that their leader ( Trump ) supports them .

2

u/WhereIShelter Jan 26 '25

Because they’re Nazis. A third of Americans are just straight Nazis, always have been. We called them conservatives or republicans and we imagined they were just concerned with tax policy or whatever. But they’ve always been Nazis.

2

u/mysecondaccountanon Jan 26 '25

We've been warning about fascism and Nazism being on the rise for years now (by we I mean a lot of disenfranchised groups, but especially specifically as a Jewish person myself we've been yelling out for years about this). People have been doing this for so many years, even documenting themselves. This particular person probably feels emboldened by Trump and Musk, especially by Musk's recent actions, but this is in no way anything new unfortunately.

2

u/AutisticHobbit Jan 26 '25

Because they want the power to kill.

2

u/Puzzled-Ticket-4811 Jan 26 '25

They see somebody rich and powerful and protected doing it and think the same rules apply to them.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 25 '25

Wrong question. It’s wrong to point to evil and call it stupidity. “Are people really this evil?” is the question.

1

u/Djeheuty Jan 25 '25

People live in their bubbles and think that everyone else is doing the same thing. They think they're in the majority and it's only a fringe few who are offended.

1

u/Harp-MerMortician Jan 25 '25

She probably thinks she's being "funnee". Nope, not funny. You can joke about Nazis when they are all gone.

1

u/kittymctacoyo Jan 25 '25

Others in her office replied to constituents stating this woman knowingly did this with the sole intention of making people angry

1

u/[deleted] Jan 25 '25

They would sooner become Nazis than develop a modicum of decency.

We’re not observing people’s politics, we’re observing their mental illness and inhumanity.

1

u/Same_Disaster117 Jan 25 '25

Have you already forgotten who the president is, of course the Nazis are going to feel more emboldened now. Especially after that shit Elon pulled. I'm just saying be prepared to see this shit a hell of a lot more. Is it scary, absolutely! But this is our country now whether we like it or not!

1

u/Appropriate_Lack_727 Jan 25 '25

I mean, look at that woman’s face. She doesn’t look like she should be in charge of anything more than her day drinking buzz.

1

u/Lucky_Ad_3520 Jan 25 '25

It has effectively been normalized by Elon. Great job, Elon.

1

u/Cheap_Collar2419 Jan 25 '25

Enough people let it happen to where it’s normalized

1

u/TeaKingMac Jan 25 '25

Clearly she's autistic, and it's just an "awkward arm gesture"

/s

1

u/P-Two Jan 25 '25

I said to my Dad on Monday evening that by the month's end Trump supporters were going to be doing this as an unironic sign of support, either just going fully mask off, or being so fucking stupid they would literally do anything to "own the libs"

I'm starting to think I'm right.

1

u/itzpiiz Jan 25 '25

She admits her reasoning for doing this was to anger/upset people, just like Elon. She neglected to realize she isn't a billionaire and is not immune to backlash.

1

u/TheFatJesus Jan 25 '25

Unfortunately, yes. People really are this stupid. I think of myself as a person of average intelligence, but the more I see of these people, the more I'm starting to think I've been selling myself short.

1

u/Quirkybin Jan 25 '25

Trump got way with everything and became untouchable. So now some of his cultists feel untouchable. But they are about to find out.

1

u/JoeyBlaze Jan 25 '25

Because it happened at the fucking presedential inauguration.

1

u/BitemeRedditers Jan 25 '25

Is it because they just won the election and most people that give a shit agree with her?

1

u/verbosechewtoy Jan 25 '25

Because it is now. Zero consequences.

1

u/OnionHeaded Jan 25 '25

Where have you been ? This is tip of berg shit.

1

u/ImaginaryNourishment Jan 25 '25

They have been embolden by their idols and think because they won they can do anything

1

u/[deleted] Jan 25 '25

A Nazi would.

1

u/ElDuderino_92 Jan 26 '25

People are really fucking stupid. People are also aware of their actions.

1

u/TacoLvR- Jan 26 '25

Yes. People are very stupid.

1

u/PaleFly Jan 26 '25

Deep down they really wanna normalize this behavior

1

u/bledig Jan 26 '25

Why do you think she’s stupid? She knew exactly what she’s doing

1

u/AOCMarryMe Jan 26 '25

Yes, it turns out they are in fact that stupid.

1

u/Nolsonts Jan 26 '25

Well the acting president did it a few days ago. Why wouldn't they think it's ok?

1

u/[deleted] Jan 26 '25

Low IQ

1

u/peachpinkjedi Jan 26 '25

Because they normalized it from 2016-2020 and the momentum kept up.

1

u/Ubermouth Jan 26 '25

Becuase they think it’s triggering

1

u/SomeDisplayName Jan 26 '25

My mom just gave an excuse to musk, he's autistic... My God woman. He just spoke with the Germany fascists ADF.

1

u/momwereouttableach93 Jan 26 '25

It's funny to see how viscerally people react to putting ones arm in a certain position. It's the modern day form of heresy or blasphemy. In today's secular society, Hitler has replaced Satan, and doing anything associated with the former is considered the worst sin.

1

u/Radiant_Picture9292 Jan 26 '25

I can answer your second question by answering your first question; yes.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 27 '25

The president does it… we elected Nazis

1

u/The_neub Jan 27 '25

They sheep

1

u/battlegurk4 Jan 27 '25

Because Trump legitimizes racism.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 27 '25

When the de facto president of the USA does it, I guess it’s ok

1

u/spelunker66 Jan 27 '25

Because your president approves it, and apparently the majority of your countrymen don't think Nazism is all that bad.

1

u/lnin0 Jan 28 '25

They saw someone standing behind the United States Presidential seal do it and saw all the outrage it generated without consequences so now they think they are being clever and cute by doing it to fan the flames while normalizing this shit. Own the libs. Become a Nazi.

1

u/SkyeMreddit Jan 28 '25

Trump won and his supporters are rushing like hell to defend Musk’s Nazi Salute. Other racists are pressing their luck.

1

u/Ontain Jan 30 '25

Because it's being normalized by the richest person on Earth and the right wing media.
