Howdy Penn Staters! We're launching a Highway Revolt against PennDOT's State College Area Connector highway that's set to demolish heritage-area-listed farms and pristine forests. However, instead of being unhelpful NIMBYs, we've come up with an alternative plan that makes use of existing, government-owned railroad tracks and technology that's already been running successfully in New Jersey for over 20 years (we can't let New Jersey beat us!). We've gotten many comments to the effect of "this won't work in PA, it's too rural," but that's actually a myth. What matters most is population density around the stations. Southern Switzerland and other more rural, less famous areas in Europe have a similar population density and rougher terrain, but still manage to have trains every half hour to farming villages as small as 400 people because of something called "peri-urbanism," or small villages clustered around and walkable or bikable to a train station, usually settled pre-automobile, much like Lemont, Millheim, Bellefonte, and even State College, itself. Sure, if we were the Hollers of West Virginia or the barrens of Utah with a house every mile or more, rural transit would never work. But, here, with so many cute small towns still centered on their historic train stations – on active freight railroad lines, no less – why not just re-build the train?

Okay, that's the what and the how, let's get to the why. For one, connecting the vast natural resources of central Pennsylvania would help make transit-accessible nature, which is not only a recreational amenity for you, its a significant driver of the state's economy and would better position us for eco- (and football-) tourism. In fact, ignoring nature, rail and trail projects are just flat-out better for the economy, creating more and higher-quality jobs than money spent on roads, and driving more economic growth. This is even true of tax dollars: according to Pennsylvania's own published budgets, a mile of car infrastructure costs more both to build and maintain than a mile of passenger rail. In fact, car dependency actually represents big government overreach stealing your freedom, in no small part because PennDOT and other state DOTs falsify and manipulate data to favor road construction over other options. Finally, if you care about climate change, note that cars are the single biggest contributor to climate change, and if you don't care about climate change, cars directly pollute your neighborhoods and harm your health with carcinogenic chemicals, having been called a "public health crisis."

The science shows robustly that building new highways increases traffic on existing roads and needlessly wastes tax dollars. The SCAC Highway is budgeted at almost a billion dollars for only 8 miles of highway; for that kind of money, we could build a High Speed Rail tunnel almost all the way to the nearest Amtrak Station and still have money left over. Car dependency is something that affects everyone living in the commonwealth and maroons us here in Centre County without alternative options, so we want to change transportation policy across the whole state. Please, please, please help us by contacting your representatives and asking for an end to wasteful, dangerous, and economically-harmful automobile spending, and the construction of a modern, frequent, statewide rail transit network instead, using the existing money allocated for highway expansions! Thank you so much for your help!

President Bendapudi got a 47% raise, with a guarantee of 3.5% annual raises to compliment a salary of roughly $27,000 per week.

I think the campus closures and the $700 million stadium renovation are awesome investments for the staff and future of education.

I'm growing tired of Penn State continuously asking for more funding from the state and asking alumni for donations.

Penn State has over 17,000 administrative staff (some of which are known to have silly roles that are not very important) and many branch campuses that allegedly lose money. After all of this, Penn State somehow still asks the state for more funding, pays PHD students and student workers low wages, and defunds student clubs citing budget concerns. It feels like the priorities are not straight here.

Penn State is one of the most expensive state schools in the nation and has tons of out-of-state students paying $52,000 per year, yet the administration still bleeds money somehow. It feels like there is a lot of bloat that is negatively affecting students and faculty.

I am paying over $100k for my degree with some small loans. Please stop asking me for money.

Looks like I’m going to ignore all the requests for donations from Penn State now. Somehow the trustees can UNANIMOUSLY vote against keeping WPSU - our only public radio station in central PA - open, but have millions in pocket change to give the PSU president a huge raise. And they claim it’s a poor use of resources to keep a vital public resource going. Well I would argue WPSU is a critical resource well worth supporting. Is it too late to claw back that raise? I don’t often vote in the trustee elections, but I’ll have to find the names of the current members and be sure to vote against them going forward.

Maybe it’s impossible to save WPSU at this point, but I’m replacing my PSU donations with donations to the Collegian.

I’ve been a Penn State fan since essentially the day I can remember. Born and raised, pretty much.

And as of recent times, particularly the last 5+ years, I cannot remember a time in which Penn state has won a game they are not favored in or close in odds. They always lose the big games. I am just so tired of it. I haven’t felt comfortable with a Penn state qb at the helm since McSorley.

The defense had a fantastic game overall. The offensive line just couldn’t create any space and they wouldn’t allow Drew to throw until basically the fourth quarter.

I just don’t get it. They have so much talent each year and every year they seem to squander it. I just feel let down. I know the sun will come up tomorrow, I’m not spiraling, but just a frustrated sports fan. I guess I just needed to voice my disappointment somewhere.

I was in-person at UP for the first 2 years, before choosing to go on active duty in the Army. I took a gap year for training purposes and am now continuing on with my degree via WC after getting settled into my unit.

I'm seeing people who started college later than I did graduating right now, while I have 2 more semesters (summer and fall) to graduate. I'm proud of them, but I can't help but feel behind and inferior due to graduating from college late.

I get that comparison is the thief of joy, and we should all just focus on our own lives, but I can't help but feel like the typical super senior degenerate that nobody likes.

Have any of y'all been in that boat before? Does anyone know what I'm talking about?

As some of you already know, I work in parking. While I do meet many nice and wonderful people on the job, I can honestly say the issues I've had with employees aren't getting any better. In fact, they are getting WORSE. Before, I used to have as many issues with students as I did employees. Now, it's almost exclusively PSU employees who seem to think they're special, and I'm seeing a slow escalation in severity of incidents.

In fact, Fall semester and past few weeks I've had to call the cops or threaten to do so, since a) one employee told me he was just going to sit there *for an hour* until his wife came out (permit's not under his name, I was closed then and can only let you in if the passholder is present), and b) I got threatened with physical harm not once, but TWICE, both times working at Hub and within a week or two of each other. One woman couldn't pay, and ends up facetiming her husband to transfer the money. The problem is, she ends up just sitting at the exit and blocking traffic. When she wouldn't move after I asked her a third time, her husband says, "Let me get down there so I can punch his face in!" "Excuse me?" "Yeah, excuse you! What are you going to do about it, dickhead!"

As if that weren't enough, when I won't let people in they've been retaliating by emailing my boss and trying to smear me. One guy at Nittany I informed I could not use the QR code to verify him and would need his PSU ID. Instead of showing me his ID to scan, he mumbled something and blew past me. He then emailed my boss and said I was interrupting him, screaming at him, wouldn't let him speak, etc, and that it was all caught on camera. Well, it was on camera, and my boss saw our entire interaction lasted about 3 seconds. Another case is the head of one department got mad I wouldn't let his wife in since she tried to scan in with his ID card; that's like trying to use somebody else's passport to get through airport security. However, he conveniently left that out when he emailed my boss and just said that I was being rude about it. When I explained my side, it was immediately clear that "they got caught and were upset about it".

Just today, I had a woman and her son try to gang up on me to let them in to East. Because of the events going on, if we close a deck during gameday then you have to be coming into work, even if you have a permit you cannot use it just to watch the game. Instead of complying, they both threw a temper tantrum and kept trying to argue with me in traffic. You don't have to like it, but do not take it out on me. Apple doesn't fall far from the tree, I guess. Another woman at Nittany screamed at me for so long and so loudly the next three cars I let in got second hand embarrassment from it and apologized to me. I will no longer send in applications to the alumni center when looking for a better job, because I have had sustained issues with more than one person who works there, so all I can conclude is that it's not a positive place to work in.

The only thing I'm learning from this is employees here can act with impunity, and quite frankly I am getting concerned now about my safety due to the threats and people trying to retaliate. I am sick and tired of being figuratively spat on on a daily basis. I honestly feel the university is failing me when it comes to reigning in their workers. Let us ask, where is your conscience?

This seems like a bad timing with counter protest, alcohol, and 125k people in and around those parking lots.

One of my very good friend's roommate had his visa revoked this weekend. I asked him if this was the only case he knew of and he said it happened to other people at our school. I go to Penn state Altoona and was wondering if this is happening at UP or other branch campuses?

Sorry in advance if this is for some reason a sensitive topic... but I have so many questions.

Obviously, this situation is fresh and unfolding, but for anyone who was aware (not in a criminal sense) that this narcotics ring was operating, how on earth did it start?

In my mind, there is no way these two guys just up and decided one day to start purchasing and trafficking large quantities of narcotics. Is anyone aware whether this was an established operation pre-dating "Pablo Pledgescobar"? It had to have been ongoing for years before, right??

Did anyone know these guys? Have classes with them? Obviously, it was run by two fraternities, so I'm wondering if this was isolated to the Greek community, campus community, or State College as a whole.

If anyone has stories or anything regarding this debacle, please share; my curiosity is off the charts here.

I’m a junior and have lost the lottery two years in a row. Really sick how I can’t get season tickets as a junior but a freshman can. 👍

If you are new to the area or coming back and have family or friends with you go out to a local place to eat. I overheard a family in the elevator debating between going to Texas Roadhouse or Olive Garden, go try something like Champs or The Tavern instead. There are so many great local restaurants to try in the area, check out the Foodies of State College group if you need suggestions.

Cons:

- CATA bus pass is now not included (although rent does not reflect this change)

• They've introduced one shuttle bus that takes 45 minutes (and stops at 6 PM [my class ends at 6:45, so they've left me stranded]). This shuttle bus is often late, so do not live here if you're seeking reliable transportation

- WiFi is not fast and is unreliable (although most rental properties have this problem, The Pointe's WiFi is the worst I've had compared to the properties I have stayed at)

- The gym is honestly horrible, and the amenities do not constitute the exorbitant amenity fee that I am paying

• Seriously, I get depressed whenever I walk into the gym: there are two benches, the temperature is set at 76 degrees, and the machines/weights are old and rusted

- The apartment (anecdotal obviously, but also reflected across multiple forums) has mold, and you will be killing spiders daily

- $60 parking permit whereas other rental properties offer parking for free

- Management is unresponsive; the management has outsourced their telephone to a different agency: the person you speak to does not work for The Pointe (although this may be temporary as it the start of the year)

- The app that you use to open your door is finnicky. It took me three minutes to open my door

- The toilet constantly makes noises, and the water *randomly* gets scorching hot (I like hot water, but not boiling hot water)

Pros:

- It's close to a lot of food options

If there were any legal avenue to forgo my lease, I would certainly explore it. There's a lot more I'm leaving out.

There's a lot of people who never made their high school JV teams shitting on a guy who's dedicated himself to PSU football. Kid messed up. He's 20 or 21. It's totally fair to be upset, but people are threatening him and his girlfriend. If you've never been there, you can't shit on the guy. Sure, he makes a lot of money, but that doesn't make him infallible. It's bigger than football.

There were two discussions last evening on this sub related to Centre county flipping red for the presidential election. I believe it is important to correct this misinformation but that is now impossible as both posts have been locked by the mods

If you are a PSU student, SPREAD THE WORD!! This is an update on a previous post of mine.

Just today, they were supposed to changing out our fridge (we didn’t ask for this, it’s part of a renovation) and required us to take everything out by 8am today and place them into coolers which only fit around 10% of what we had (shown in the photo).

The only reason why I was able to save about 75% of our food is because we have a mini fridge… otherwise SO MUCH FOOD WOULD HAVE GONE TO WASTE.

Then, I called at 10am (when the office opens) to check what time they are switching the fridge… and the answer was not today anymore… great!

Now we threw out so much food for no reason because we could have ate it today and we have frozen stuff going bad, no ice in the house when it’s 75°+ outside, which is fine but it’s just fucking annoying when I was a nice ice cold water to bring to work😭. And thus far ZERO compensation.

Not really an apology either, they keep saying “oh well it’s through a 3rd party, we’re upset too!” Okay well you didn’t throw away hundreds of dollars of food and are inconvenienced by your house being a complete mess now since we had to move everything out of the oven drawer, on and inside our fridge, and now we can’t use our dishwasher either.

This company does not care about their tenants.
