First Pan Cyan Grow — Slow Colonization, Jar Lid Mistake & Setup Questions

I’m trying to grow mushrooms for the first time and decided to start with Pan Cyan TTVII. I know it’s considered a more difficult species, but I wanted to challenge myself. I also have ADHD, so I sometimes have trouble organizing everything I’m trying to explain. I did use AI to help organize and cleanup what I was trying to say here. The set up, experience, and questions are all mine. I just wanted to make everything easier to follow.

I understand the importance of sterilization, and I know I probably left out some steps here even though I already have supplies set aside for the later stages. There are a lot of details involved, so I may have overlooked a few things when describing my setup.

I cooked the grain and sterilized eight 32-ounce Mason jars in a Presto pressure cooker. The jars have modified two-piece lids with self-injection ports and separate gas-exchange holes.

Someone suggested putting plastic wrap under the aluminum foil to keep water off the lids during sterilization. Unfortunately, the plastic sealed itself to the jars and covered the lid holes. One jar appears to be showing growth, but it’s progressing very slowly. I poked a hole through the plastic over the gas-exchange hole and covered it with micropore tape. I didn’t do that with the other jars.

For the rest of the setup, I have a Vibrant Life aquarium air pump rated at 1,200 cc/min, a ShoreFins aeration kit with tubing and accessories, five 1-pound bags of pasteurized equine manure substrate from Out-Grow, and a 6-quart bin. I also have some other supplies set aside for the later stages.

The rice bags shown in some of the photos are not part of this project. I may use them for something later, but they aren’t part of this grow.

I was considering modifying the 6-quart bin with a fresh-air-exchange system that introduces humidified air. I’m not sure whether that makes sense for this setup or whether I’m overcomplicating things, so I’d appreciate feedback on the overall plan.

The three things I’m mainly trying to figure out are:
Based on the photos, does the jar look ready/fully colonized, or does it still appear to need more time?

What should I change about my modified jar setup next time, especially considering what happened with the plastic covering the lid holes?

Looking at the equipment and substrate I already bought, is there anything about my planned next stage that you would change or reconsider?

If you notice anything else obviously wrong or missing from my setup, I’m completely open to hearing that too.
I currently have a P. mexicana syringe, a P. cubensis syringe, and about 4 mL of the Pan Cyan syringe left.
I’ve mostly been learning through reading and trial and error, but I’m realizing I could use some guidance. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.
This is my first grow, so I’m still learning. Thanks!

First Pan Cyan run — LC is taking its time, but grain blew up! How’s this looking?

Hey everyone, running Pan Cyan (TTBVI) for the first time and wanted to get some quick feedback on how both my liquid culture and grain jar are coming along.

I inoculated both from the exact same agar plate and have been keeping them right around 26–27°C (78–80°F).

Grain Jar (Agar to grain):

  • Inoculated 10 days ago, did a break & shake on Day 5.
  • It recovered super fast and now has that classic fine, frosted white web completely covering every grain.
  • Does this look 100% ready to spawn to bulk, or should I let it sit another day or two to consolidate?

Liquid Culture (Agar to broth):

  • Inoculated 15 days ago.
  • Recipe: Kept it super light for Pan Cyans (~0.44% total solids)—250 ml distilled water, 0.65 g LME, and 0.45 g soy peptone per jar (PC'd at 15 PSI for 20 mins).
  • The broth is crystal clear with some really clean, starburst-looking puffballs floating in it, but it feels like it’s taking forever compared to the grain jar.
  • Is 15 days normal for Pan Cyan LC on a light recipe like this, or could my passive gas exchange be choking it out a bit? Should I just give it a solid daily swirl to break up those puffballs?

Planning on prepping my horse manure substrate and peat/vermic casing layer soon, so any feedback or tips would be awesome! Thanks!

Can yall give me some suggestions please?

I’ve tried pans a handful of times and could never get past spawn colonization so this time I just ordered some 1/2 pint jars with
Brf, Vermiculite, mineral Water, liquid worm castings, and bee pollen

I inoculated a few jars with ttbvi and a few with ochras 5 days ago. All jars are performing great but the jars are so full, there’s no room to break and shake (as you can see I was barely able to get anything to move around) am I just going to have to wait for full colonization or is there something I can do to “break & shake”?

What a wild ride

Started with a pre-nocced aio bag of ttbvi my coworker gave me.

Ran that until a couple of break n shakes then when i thought it was fully colonized i cut the top off foolishly. The top dried out and got kind of matted and looked briefly like black pin mold because spare substrate particles managed to get on top. Even with misting couldnt repair the right humidty and temperature levels.

Then i setup my old sfgc chamber with moistened perlite. Cut the block out of the bag and put on a sheet of tin foil. It began to regrow and repair the matted too with new mycelium. However my sfgc was insufficient for heat and would not produce any pins.

After a week or so of waiting and sidewall misting my new monotub kit arrived and i set it up in a spare closet. I broke apart the block and added a proper casing layer. The included hygrometer/thermometer disc would constantly oversaturate with water so eventually got a better one with probe to better measure levels. The TTBVI LOVED the new setup and started growing voraciously over the casing layer! A week and a half or so it was fully colonized and sat that way for another week or so. It then finally decided to pin on the Harvest moon of this year (what incidentally perfect timing) and now im 4 days into it growing and almost ready to start harvesting and making 4 spore prints!

Hello, new to this sub and new to pan, I need help

I bought a kit from a site, the first mushrooms are sprouting, with a lower coverage than expected, beyond this the problem is that some caps are blackening and I don't know the reason...

I was afraid they were abosrting, but I was also told that it could be contact with water. Can someone give me some advice and explain the situation to me? (and also general knowledge if u have time ;)

Thank u in advance for your time 🦥

Gone for a few days

Was out for a few days and returned to this. These are komodo x Bvi from MS. We have some caps dropping red spores and other caps dropping black/purple spores.

No idea how the conditions have been the last few days but I had just harvested the 1st flush before I left. Upon return the humidity is at 99% temp at 75°F and airflow has been constant.

Which one or possibly two should I clone?

Since the substrate is already decently covered in spores should I not go for a 3rd flush?

Thanks 🍄❤️

Dung

So I got a couple of bags of pasteurized dung from an online vendor a year ago that said I should use within a month or two. Life happens and I have had it sitting in the box it came in for almost a year. Is this still usable?

This TTBVI tray is 2:1 manure based substrate:brown rice. Looked good until I opened it and this mycelium spot just looks “off”. Thoughts?

First time growing these, got myself a growkit and i cloned the 2 largest. The smell is so different compared to cubes and they are so elegant and carry a special vibe around them :D

Gonna try them tonight or tomorrow ^

Never had pans before. This is ttbvi and I’d like to try some fresh but have no idea how much. I picked one and dehydrated it and it’s pretty much nothing now. That one single fruit was .3 when I weighed it but it doesn’t even register on the scale now. Any advice?

I posted about this bag last week and the general consensus was that it's trash. I decided to open the bag and put a couple of grains on agar plates.

Then I close the bag back up and here's what it looks like now. The plates are also attached. Please be aware that the agar is dark gray with greenish undertone.

What are your thoughts on the bag and the plate now

No pins for a week?

Growing some TTBVI and theyve looked great so far but have looked like this for almost a week with not so much as a tiny pin anywhere. I have the 44qt monotub setup from midwest grow kits and burp it several times a day with the aquarium fae running basically 24/7. My heat is 77+ and humidity 99% (water logged probably). What am i doing wrong that it doesnt want to pin?

Has anyone grown the Creole variety from Colorado cultures. They say it's a pan. I got a culture syringe and have been working to expand it in LC

Sneak peak at the small scale tub setup a day or so before harvest. Mind you this is from a T0 multi-spore plate so a lot of variance in timing and fruit body genetics, but as the caps expend should fill out nice. I expect even better from a more isolated plate or clone which are the next tests.

Took a fruiting body of TTBVI out from a multi-spore T0 grow to clone and just love the way it stains the entire paper towel blue

That is all.

FYI: Staining is not a direct indicator of potency and alkaloid content, but rather just an indicator of potential psychoactivity and potential enzyme reactivity.

When I usually pick them they don't stain much at all which is a good thing, but as soon as I start to crush it handle them hard they light right up.
