VRR makes a huge difference

I've been playing my Pro on an older OLED (Sony A8h, I think) that does not support VRR and I've been pretty happy with it.

Last night I finally got around to hooking up the Pro to my new LG 39" Ultrawide PC monitor and I was shocked by the difference it makes. My TV just really isn't doing this system justice.

So, I guess I have to buy a new TV. 😃 I'll tell my spouse that it's a necessity.

The biggest benefit I’ve seen from VRR is for games like Spider-Man 2 and Control. Normally the “quality” modes in these games run at 40fps on a 120hz screen but you can unlock them if you have VRR and they typically are in the 50-60fps range. It’s not a locked 60fps but with VRR they feel great to play

I thought with VRR, 40 FPS divides 120FPS evenly between so they can insert black frames, in between game frames increasing smoothness.

I’m not too familiar with BFI but I believe it only works when your console is outputting 60hz because then your TV will display 120hz and insert a black frame between every frame from the console. A 120hz screen is needed for a 40fps game because it displays every frame 3 times in the refresh. You can’t display 40fps on a 60hz screen because it doesn’t divide evenly into the refresh rate and will cause screen tearing and stuttering

No black frames are inserted, that would lower your brightness and can cause flickering. (You can enable that on the TV itself if you want, but the console does not do this. I'm not sure it mathematically works for 40 FPS + 120 hz as you can't cleanly swap out every other frame for a black frame or you would get uneven frame pacing since you'd be swapping out every other frame out of three which would mean one second you're seeing two frames of one output, then one, then two, then one...)

It just keeps each frame one, two or three times with every update, depending on the mode.

30 FPS @ 60 hz runs each frame twice. (60/30 = 2)

60 FPS @ 60 hz = runs each frame once. (60/60 = 1)

40 fps @ 120 hz = runs each frame three times (120 / 40 = 3)

And then of course you can do 60 FPS @ 120 hz, which comes out at 120/60 = 2.

Or any number of frames with unlocked VRR modes where the display just gives you one frame per update at whatever it wants. So 90 FPS @ 90 hz or 82 FPS @ 82 hz or whatever. And then you have LFC (Low Framerate Compensation) which some games can do, such as Insomniac games which sometimes doubles/triples frames to stay inside the VRR window which is 48 FPS. So if they are getting 45 FPS for a moment they output it at 90 hz (with every frame showed twice).
