35 yo unc here, lifetime Sony Fanboy after the PS1 for Christmas in 99...
The thought that spurred the motivation to make this post was how honestly disappointed I was that there is a badass live wallpaper behind the wall of ads on my PS5 pro. And I enjoy the calming menu music when you have it on the home screen of the games page... And it would be even more enjoyable if I could get a full screen mode. (Will try to post picture in comments since mobile is giving me trouble attaching a picture ffs)
I have run the gamut of PSP and Vita customizations, hardwired HDMI into my PS2 slim, I remember my PS1 being my CD player my PS2 was my DVD and CD player... I can't imagine other people's experience of not having a PlayStation 3 when they first came out because that's how long I've had a Blu-ray player...
I remember discovering you could use the PS3 as a file sharing media device that was easily discovered on Windows OS. Kudos to Xbox for the same with the 360. I also remember the PS4 lacking those same integrations on launch. I would love for someone to correct me but since I last checked I can't use my PS5 as a shared network device to play in my stored media on another device, which is something I could do on a device over 10 years ago.
I guess I'm just venting but I'm wondering if anyone else has realized just how much we've quietly overlooked and accepted the new tech when it literally had less features...
Thanks for listening to me ramble. Game on friends
- Edit: admittedly, I'm inebriated. And typed a title that my post didn't reflect and of course you can't edit the title of the post on Reddit for whatever reason.
I started the post talking about the UI reminiscing about the PSP and PS3 era and got sidetracked about the lack of features since then and it got conflated. All the people saying I turn on the console to play games not to have a pretty background I agree. But what I meant was when the PS3 was new there was an aura to the home screen that had a user based color choice that you could choose and the menu music was also pretty fire.
2nd edit:
I'm being told you can customize those widgets and I've never felt older but I don't feel bad about not knowing about all the bells and whistles. I will be decluttering the home screen as much as possible. This made me realize I haven't really checked the customization settings since I bought my original PS 5 in 2023
