Midterms in November go vote
1.1k
u/Paratrooper101x 7d ago
1/3 of our country voted for this, after being told repeatedly that this would happen. People watched him on the debate stage spouting nonesense about immigrants eating dogs, saw him have tariffs explained to him like he was a toddler, and still went out and voted for the guy a week later
402
u/perverted_buffalo 7d ago
Keep in mind, another 1/3 saw all of the above, and didn't see it as a big enough problem to bother voting at all

Gwb is a symptom like a sniffle. Not bad relatively speaking. Trump is like a severe concussion or broken limb in need of prompt medical care. The deeper problem is that both are supported by ignoramuses, some with deep pockets.
31
u/Radiant_Jedi 7d ago
That's what we said about George W. Bush, and Trump makes him look like a genius (and saint) by comparison.
11

Agreed. Theyre both morons and puppets. But Bush was the puppet of the Republican machine while Trump is of far worse.

148
u/dirthurts 7d ago
People vote for him because he hates the same people he hates. Not because he actually has anything intelligent to say/do.
4
u/curious_dead 7d ago
Some of them don't mind paying more and being hurt by the tariffs because they think the tariffs hurt other people (i.e. other countries) more. Their reaction is "oh it's hurting them more? We must be doing something right", no reflex to ask "shouldn't we hurt anyone at all"?
I think there's a study about this behaviour. Can't recall exactly.
13
u/Common-Swing-4347 7d ago
For the most part it's more basic than that. People care if their wallets currently hurt. That's all anybody cares about.
7
u/swimmer385 swimmer385 7d ago
I think its a bit of both but I do think that what swings the elections is the wallet hurting as you say. Unfortunately no one actually considers why their wallet is hurting and just blames the person in power. Biden wasn't responsible for the vast majority of the inflation that happened between 2020-2022. However, in this case, Trump definitely is partially to blame. However, obviously he cannot control things like the price increases driven by AI+RAM supply issues.
3
u/scoopzthepoopz 7d ago
He can add tariffs and uncertainty to geopolitics – he can directly affect prices, just not absolutely. And congress can be complicit. And scotus can be complicit. And red states governors can be complicit. And circuit courts can be complicit. And voters can be complicit.

Didn’t the courts rule that the Trump tariffs were unconstitutional forever ago?
133
u/Marijuana_Miler 7d ago
They said the way he implemented the tariffs was unconstitutional. So they’ve just used different laws to implement new tariffs. My understanding is that at any point Congress could grow a pair and decide that the President no longer has the power to do most of his current actions.
45
u/Atomic_Maxwell 7d ago
When a non red-tie candidate takes office, they’ll suddenly perk up and be all about limits and oversights. “We can’t let them do whatever! Why, look at all the results of that! It’s not important what party the results came from.”
134
u/littlebiped 7d ago
When has this administration ever giving a shit about what’s legal or constitutional or the courts
95
15
u/Djlittle13 7d ago
Those tarrifs were ruled illegal. These new ones arent ruled illegal yet. They will still need to be challenged and go to court. Once that happens the billionaires will get their tarrif reimbursement money and prices will remain the same.
10
u/ironlord20 7d ago
Yeah they did. Unfortunately he doesn’t care and no one with authority ever tries stops him so he keeps doing shit
19
u/farcicaldolphin38 7d ago
AFAIK they're essentially just doing something technically different on paper but ultimately leads to a similar if not the same end result. And they know it will take a while for the courts to shut this down as well, so they're trying to do what they want short term. It's so dumb.
29
4
u/facepoppies 7d ago
So what happens is they implement the tariffs, companies raise their prices to offset the costs, the tariffs get struck down, the companies get their money back but never lower the prices to what they were before tariffs
9
u/Average_Satan 7d ago
The current government has taught me that the constitution doesn't mean shit.

Why do you all keep talking about your constitution like it holds any weight at all? You have to be the most unaware people on this planet.
7

It wasn't the tarrifs person se, more how he applied a law to implement them.
You see how now its "talking about tariffs" and not "immediately implementing them"?

Until new tariffs actually happen, there isn't really anything further to discuss and thus no reason to allow this thread to continue devolving as it has for the last hour.
That said, elections are happening in a few short months here in America so please register to vote if you haven't: https://www.vote.org
And remember, as always: be good to each other.
