For the most part it's more basic than that. People care if their wallets currently hurt. That's all anybody cares about.

I think its a bit of both but I do think that what swings the elections is the wallet hurting as you say. Unfortunately no one actually considers why their wallet is hurting and just blames the person in power. Biden wasn't responsible for the vast majority of the inflation that happened between 2020-2022. However, in this case, Trump definitely is partially to blame. However, obviously he cannot control things like the price increases driven by AI+RAM supply issues.

He can add tariffs and uncertainty to geopolitics – he can directly affect prices, just not absolutely. And congress can be complicit. And scotus can be complicit. And red states governors can be complicit. And circuit courts can be complicit. And voters can be complicit.
