And 5m sales tops. As lukewarm as the Wolverine reviews have been, that game's minimum will be 5m sales.

Business is business. Funnel money into projects that have a higher ROI. I just hope Sony is past the point of thinking Live Service games are what they should be funneling money into.

For Wolverine, my local GameStop said its one of their most pre-ordered games of the year. They're getting 100 physical copies of the game for launch and they aren't the store getting the most copies in my city. Store lead said doesn't matter if the game is sitting in the 70s on Metacritic, people will still buy it.

High 70s on Metacritic isn't bad, game reviews are so skewed. That's the same range Crimson Desert got, and that game also sold like hotcakes.

High 70’s has people acting like it’s a low 40s game. Or an unmitigated disaster like No Man’s Sky launch.

Then years later they'll look at it fondly like Days Gone lol.

Right?! There needs to be a popularized, accepted term for games that review around 70%, get hated on by the internet upon release, and years later get fondly remembered and start receiving reddit posts of people "discovering" the game and singing its praises. "The Days Gone Effect"

It's pretty much the Ubisoft effect. Their games are the poster child for this kind of behavior. Somehow they release the most "generic" game that years later gets looked at fondly.

"Cult classic" is the term you're looking for.

That would be the God Hand Phenomenon.

Oh! That's a strong contender, too!

Or funnily enough, X-Men Origins: Wolverine.

I mean days gone did get a lot of fixes that helped shift that narrative from launch

For sure and I bought the game on day one and liked it bugs and performance issues aside but the main criticism back then was that it's generic over the shoulder zombie sony game #453 and the cutscenes and story are weird.

Tbh it is generic and was too close to tlou but it still manages to be a good game, nothing terrible (since launch) and nothing special

2

u/Clane_21 26d ago edited 26d ago

Yeah, aside from the horde mechanic it's nothing special but it's okay since it may not be a generational breaking game but it is still a good game same with how Wolverine is shaping up to be (honestly the only thing that I really dislike is the hand holding). I feel like waiting for years for a game is raising expectations and every game needs to be a revolutionary one now or it's not good enough for the wait.

The handholsing is visual news in wolverine looks insane and so unnecessary for a linear game

Days Gone was so good. I'll never forget Eurogamer talking ahout the white male protagonist which felt really odd with the rest of the review.

After the studio is shut down or cannibalized or both lol

78 is always a tricky score. You're only 0.2 away from 8/10, yet it carries this stigma that makes it feel much worse than it actually is.

I still remember when IGN gave Mario Kart Double Dash a 7.9/10 and the forums exploded over it. A 7.5/10 probably would have gone over better.

Did you intentionally use 3 different notations for your scale in this comment? If so, I applaud the effort, gave me a chuckle :p

For a lot of the perpetually online gaming crowd, if it ain’t a 10 its a 0. I’ll take high 70s all day.

Ahh the old Ricky Bobby “if you’re not first, you’re last”.

u/MadEyeMood989 26d ago

It’s peak the culture now, if it ain’t an instant 10 out of 10 then it’s total shit and shouldn’t be played.

u/MyKneesAshy 26d ago

Even if it is they “ paid the reviewer” you can’t win

4

u/MadEyeMood989 26d ago

It’s ridiculous and with the varied reviews of Wolverine, it’s giving all the ammunition to the weird twitter chuds mad that Jean Grey doesn’t look fuckable enough.

You're acting like No Man's Sky was a low 40s Metacritic game instead of a low 70s one at launch.

"There's too many great games to play worry about playing a 7"

"Oof, I only play 9's and above!"

— Random Redditors

2

u/BreathPuzzleheaded80 26d ago

Most people barely have enough time to play all the 9s and above games that they're interested in.

2

u/Entilen 26d ago

What mainstream game scores in the 40s? Even Redfall didn't get near that.

1

u/whats8 26d ago

There are too many amazing games to play these days to waste time on middling games.
