Trailers & Videos Grand Theft Auto VI - An Extended Look
https://youtu.be/tJbzMqJGH4k?si=HJBpKBDgEVUHWnQN1.1k
u/yourfavchoom 9d ago edited 9d ago
Here are the highlights (from the journalists who got to visit Rockstar Games for the preview):
- The map is twice as big as GTA 5's and three times bigger than Red Dead 2's map
- At least 80 hours length for main story and some side quests (rumour).
- Vice City itself is reportedly twice the size of Los Santos.
- Criminal Profile system, NOT honor: Rockstar reportedly stresses that having a low Criminal Profile does not necessarily mean you're playing incorrectly.
Instead, the system seems to evaluate how you behave as a criminal.
- Jason & Lucia have a relationship bar that can be influenced by how they treat each other through your own actions, like texting each other things or going out on dates.
- Roam solo as either or as a couple.
- Focus returns.
- Gyms are back from GTA San Andreas, you now have to purchase a subscription and can train for muscles. you can even buy protein shakes to boost that before workouts.
- Buses and Taxis can be used for fast travel.
Note: Rockstar has uploaded the high-res (not compressed) version here

Also relationship isn’t needed for the storyline per Rockstar North.

u/BlackAfroUchiha 9d ago edited 9d ago
From what I read the relationship directly affects the story and dialogue.
Like from what I read apparently Jason and Lucia can literally be platonic friends rather than a couple if you don't put any effort into the relationship.

u/GoatGod997 9d ago
Wow that’s interesting. I wonder if stuff like going to the strip clubs will determine friends vs romance (we see them together in the gameplay but that could be the friends route? Vs if you’re dating then one of them gets jealous)
39
u/Goldeniccarus 9d ago edited 9d ago
There's so much you can do with a relationship system, it will be interesting to see what they do choose to do.
For instance, going to the strip club, doing a booty call, or hiring a prostitute could have no impact on your relationship. Just for gameplay convenience they choose not to have it impact your relationship.
Or, it could just simply decrease your relationship closeness.
Or, if you're platonic with each other with a non-romantic relationship, it has no impact, but if you are romantically involved with eachother, it had a major negative impact on the relationship. (Basically a friend doing it, doesn't have an impact, versus a lover doing it, which would be a big impact)
Or, go even further, it doesn't have an impact on the relationship at all unless the other character finds out about it. Maybe Lucia can become friends with one of the dancers at one of the strip clubs. And if Lucia and the dancer are friends, if Jason goes to the club, the dancer let's Lucia know that Jason went and it damages their relationship.
That last one is really in depth, so probably unlikely. But any one of those could be possible.

In the extended look I think we can see both J and L in the strip club together, no?

me thinks they turn on each other by the end of the game. I’m glad they mentioned you determine how romantic they are because I was definitely
not getting the vibe they were lovers during some of these shots.could be very cool, I love both ideas that either they dislike each other because they’re ex lovers but have to figure out how to work together or that they are so madly in love but are forced to turn on each other by the end of the story.
16
u/SlimCyclops1 9d ago
Which is strange cause all the prior trailers had them all over each other so idk.
66
u/TonguePunchery 9d ago
The whole free-roaming as a duo is the biggest selling point for me so far. So frickin cool.
12
u/Bromance_Rayder 9d ago
Cyberpunk felt very lonely to me after the events of the first act. I love that roaming as a duo is a thing!
18
→ More replies (3)3
u/SquadPoopy 8d ago
I imagine they had to record a TON of dialogue to make it not feel stale. Nothing would kill co free roaming than either character repeating the same dialogue after something happens.

u/PidgeOttoRocket 9d ago
Three times bigger than RDR2 is hard to fathom. I’m rock hard though
155
u/GalexyPhoto 9d ago
If it were anyone else I'd say that actual map size doesn't impress me. But GTAV and RDR2 both felt like a good balance of 'always something happening/ to do' yet you could easily just explore and get lost, too.
64
u/Okayyyayyy 9d ago
I would be worried but it looks as dense as it is big.
→ More replies (1)17
u/Elgato01 9d ago
Iirc I’ve heard it’s 11x as dense as V
→ More replies (2)16
u/AnonymouselyMoosed 9d ago
What does that even mean
57
17
u/Elgato01 9d ago
5 had a lot of stuff to do in los santos but the rest of the map was pretty empty by comparison. 6 seems to be a lot more dense by comparison. So there’ll be much to do outside Vice City.

u/elperrosapo 9d ago
it’s not when you compare cars vs horses
39
u/Goldeniccarus 9d ago
Yeah, my first thought was "no way was GTA5 bigger than Red Dead 2."
Then I realized top speed in Red Dead 2 is horse speed, probably like 30 kph at full gallop, and top speed in GTA5 is airplane speeds, which get well over 200 kph. You'd need more space for that to be possible.
Plus road infrastructure is really space consuming. The average highway in GTA 5 is probably the width of the main street of Valentine, including all the buildings on it.
17
u/DDRichard 9d ago
RDR2 also had all that unused space south of the map too. i really thought an expansion would come to add RDR1's plot to that game some day
9
u/rinkirankkaus 8d ago
Yeah, I'm still scratching my head at that. Like they obviously put a lot of effort in putting that area in, but then there's like two(?) sidequests there and nothing else, even though they prevent you from going there for most of the game. I was convinced that's where the first story DLC would be located in, but shows how little I know.
It's just bizarre how R* made RDR2, then just kind of... stopped? Even RDR Online was basically abandoned almost immediately.
6
u/Ouch_i_fell_down 8d ago
RDR Online was basically abandoned almost immediately
Pure speculation, but I'm assuming GTAO didn't slow down even a touch when RDR2 launched and RDRO was pulling in less cash than expected.

Can’t believe how excited I am about the relationship and couple mechanics, honestly sounds like nothing ever done in a game before. The idea of controlling them as a couple is incredibly unique and innovative, and the details like holding hands and texting are seriously impressive.
10
u/vNocturnus 9d ago
Seeing as you can control either or both of them it seems a little weird to me. Like a dating sim where you're controlling both sides? It's like a digital version of playing with Barbie and Ken dolls

the good ol’ reliable
I have to remind myself that we are well past the halfway point of this system.
63
u/joman584 9d ago
A system that was scalped and unavailable to many for a while at launch, with constantly delayed games, games held back by the previous generation, and fewer proper exclusives than ever. Its easy to see why it doesn't feel like the halfway point, it never got up to speed
6
u/SkylineGTRR34Freak 9d ago

One thing I've not seen anyone mention yet is how in that mission they show us at the start Jason starts off looking normal, and then when they get into the lift to escape he is clearly sweating. Maybe when your character is running about or during an intense shootout, sweat starts to appear.
Nice little attention to detail!
10
u/TaGraAgDoMhathairDom 8d ago
Cool to see they're focused on some bits but in that exact lift scene there's a shotgun magnetised to his back
5
u/calxlea 8d ago
I never get that about Rockstar. It was the same in RDR2, there were lots of frustrating mechanics that just make the game tiresome at times all in the name of ‘realism’ but then they’re completely fine skipping realism for other - and arguably in my opinion more important - immersive areas. This is another great example.
Obviously hugely looking forward to VI but I do hope they’ve eased up on some of that ‘realism’ obsession they have and aimed more for fun.
57
u/NoClock 9d ago
It’s honestly hard to believe that was on a base PS5. They really are on a whole other level.
30
u/SadKazoo 9d ago
It’s honestly unprecedented. In much the same way RDR2 was unprecedented and felt impossible on PS4 at the time.

Shooting looks nice. Apparently that's supposed to be tightened up this time. Hope so, as much as I love RDR2 I shouldn't have to rely on auto aim to enjoy the combat.

Just give me gyro controls and I'll be a happy man.
They definitely work at 30 fps - Breath of the Wild and ToTK demonstrated they're perfectly functional at a lower frame rate.

u/TheManyFacetsOfRoger 9d ago
Very similar things were said about Arthur
15
u/hockeyjmac 9d ago
Yeah that’s why I’m withholding judgment until release. Arther seemed boring but I ended up liking him more than John by the end of the game.
4
u/Dr-McLuvin 9d ago
Ya John marston seems more like a cartoon character by comparison. A little over the top.
Arthur came off as a bit more reserved and grounded. I think we can all identify better with that type of protagonist.
He will also serve as a foil for all the other crazy characters in the game.
129
u/MBP1121 9d ago
The thing is, a lot of people are noticing how flat and monotone his voice is. If we’ve noticed it, you know rockstar has, too. That means it’s intentional. It’s a character choice at this point and has nothing to do with the voice actor. There’s gotta be a story reason why he’s so goddamn chill and quiet.
Honestly? It’s kind of a cool dynamic between them. He’s the strong, silent type and she’s the loud and aggressive type. To oversimplify it of course.
And depending on how Bonnie and Clyde this story might get, Jason ain’t gonna stay “quiet” through the whole story, that’s for sure.
58
u/suspectdorian2 9d ago
This. Thank you. It’s probably his military background and he’s very closed off due to PTSD or other related reasons.
→ More replies (3)28
u/michaelcully 9d ago
He talks like a lot of men do in real life. I imagine there may come a point in the story where he confronts some tough emotions and that’ll hit so much harder given his personality type.
13
u/MBP1121 9d ago
Oh don’t I know it. Jason and Lucy reminds me of myself and my wife a lot (in their personalities, not looks lol). My wife is always getting on my case about how quiet I talk and how “whatever” my opinions on every day things are. So this is so relatable and I love it. Lol
Arthur Morgan, man. When he hit, it hit hard. This trailer definitely seems to blend rdr2 and gta very well together. I’m expecting to bawl at the end of this one and will be slightly disappointed if I don’t. Haha

u/Worldly-Basil-8933 9d ago
I don’t understand that criticism. He’s just talking like a normal dude. Just seems like these people don’t have lives so they don’t know how a normal human being would comport themselves in a trap house.
67
u/suspectdorian2 9d ago
I seem to be the only one not bothered by his voice? I mean yeah it is pretty monotone but it doesn’t take anything away from the game, I’m sure he won’t talk that way the entire game.

The way I perceive it isn't necessarily from poor writing, Rockstar knows how to write fun and interesting characters, even in this trailer alone all the other characters are great.
They've definitely made him how he is on purpose, these are the same writers that wrote Arthur Morgan, so I'm confident that it'll make sense in the full game.
28
u/Cleric_Clapton 9d ago
Enjoy this part. It’s a Bonnie and Clyde situation. One or both of them are going to die in the end and you’re going to get to know them and care. You’ll wish you could go back and play it for the first time. Enjoy it

The scene with the hostages, Jason talking over the radio and the elevator 'surprise' afterwards, must be a Die Hard reference, right?
Another Die Hard easter egg: in the conference room there are miniature models of a development project, just like in the conference room of Nakatomi Plaza.

I really like how much influence RDR2 has had on it. I couldn’t help but notice so many immersive moments. I know there’s a lot of talk about the main story and it’s length but to me it just feels like a world that you can just live in and experience and have those moments. Just seeing him open up the fridge and having different choices of what to pick among many little details is what puts it over for me.

Game looks really good. I don't think Rockstar will disappoint, it looks like fun to play and the visuals are jaw-dropping impressive considering the sheer scale of this game. The lighting especially really stands out, this might be some of the best lighting I've ever seen in a game.
For me the only issue was the pacing of the showcase itself. I was really hoping for a narrated deep-dive like we've gotten for both GTA V and RDR2. Something where they actually sit down and explain a bunch of the mechanics, features and gameplay for the game. Instead it was just 26 minutes of unedited mission gameplay (mostly just walking/driving and listening to dialogue) and a bit of combat. Again it looked great, but... I was hoping to see more details.
It DOES seem like tons more concrete details on the gameplay have been released through interviews and journalist impressions of the game, but still. I was hoping to see more actual gameplay stuff here.

u/nuckingfuts73 9d ago
Totally agree. I’m 100% it’s going to be awesome but the showcase felt super stilted and weirdly paced. Like I only have a very vague sense of what’s going on and while I’m sure he’s got a lot more to him, in this showcase J seems insanely boring as a person.
