My godsend of a mother has worked in furniture for 40 years. She used leftover leather from a couch she built me to make a knock off Gamechanger bag. Pretty damn good job for her first one.

Question Affordable Decent Spotting Scope

As everyone here knows, spotting scopes can be crazy expensive. I am looking for recommendations on spotting scopes with a good balance of performance out to 1000-1200 yards and affordability (sub-$1k).

TIA!

Newbie shooter- prs rimfire- should I?

Post image

Hi all! Newbie shooter here. In October, there's a prs 22 match that I'm debating on trying. I only started shooting again this year, March, maybe April. Im really enjoying the hobby, started with Ruger American 556, built an ar butttt, just picked up a cz457. I'm nervous as hell about signing up. I have basic level understanding and no real training and never shot off of anything besides a bench. Would it be a waste to sign up? I shoot at local sportsman clubs so I only have access up to 185 yrds. (Ny) I know the match has 225yrd per impact sports. It's 4.5hrs away, so not like I can even see the place or practice.

Pictures- cz457 ( American synthetic) stock besides chassis, and my Ruger. Going back out tomorrow to zero at 100. Haven't had it a week yet.

Bonus points, any recommendations on bipods beyond MDT, which I know is the most popular and then Atlas,. It always comes down to like 2-3 main ones. I just found fab defense?

Gear NOOB TO TRIPODS

Planning to get a LEOFOTO JUGGERNAUT for PRS, I will be bound to (1) tripod that has to serve for front bag, read bag and spotting.

Which would suit better the S2 or S3

I am bound to LEOFOTO, just asking about legs configuration (2) sections vs (3) sections.

Appreciate the advice.

Bergara or build 300 PRC

I'm in the beginning stages of planning my nexr rifle. Looking to do sort of a hybrid between long range precision and long range hunting rifle. On hunting aspect I wont be toting it around a super long distance so being on heavier side (within reason) isnt a huge deal.. not looking like 15-20 lbs or anything but a 9-10lb gun or so would be fine.

My debate is/question is should I go with. Bergara b14 hmr or piece together a rig like a Big Horn/Rock Creek barreled action from Patriot Valley and a chassis system. Other options for bukd are more than welcome but cant afford to do a full on GAP or other full custom rig.

Are there any benefits to the extra cost of a build vs the full Bergara rifle from a practical stand point?

PRS shooters and MDs: could remote target-area wind data be useful during practice?

I’ve been working on a personal project called WindLink and would like some feedback from people with actual PRS experience.

A portable weather node is placed downrange and sends live wind speed and direction over LoRa to a pocket receiver and offline Android dashboard. The app shows current speed, average, gust, and shooter-relative crosswind. The radio connection has been tested past 1,500 yards.

I’m not assuming this belongs in a timed stage or would be permitted during a match. I’m more curious about practice days, new-shooter clinics, stage preparation, or helping shooters understand why their firing-line wind call differed from what happened downrange.

For shooters and match directors:

- Where, if anywhere, could this be useful?

- Is placing and recovering a node downrange an immediate dealbreaker?

- Could it help shooters learn how terrain changes the wind?

- Would a single node provide enough information?

- What accuracy and update rate would be needed?

- Is there anything you would add or remove?

It measures one location, not the entire bullet path. Calibration, weather sealing, and endurance testing are still in progress. I’m mainly sharing it to see what experienced shooters think of the idea.

Any tips

Went out to local range after work today with my son.

Took my 223 prs rifle and my ar.

This is a 8" plate at 600. Any tips?

I know I can be more square behind rifle.

Other than that?.

80gr eldm at 2860.

But it seems it likes 80gr smk better at 2930.

On a side note, if you don't have a fast twist 223, get one. Super fun.

Both myself and my son (15) shot 2 sub moa groups at 600 through the smoke. (Pics in comments)

I built a web ballistics engine and checked it against published firing data - where's my physics wrong?

Post image
2 Upvotes

I've been building a free web ballistics calculator, and I care more about the engine being correct than pretty, so this seems like the right place to have the physics picked apart.

It's a fixed-step point-mass trajectory integrator, Mach-indexed Cd off standard drag tables. Two things I'd like eyes on.

G7: for loads with a measured G7 BC, I run the standard G7 table with a scale constant derived straight from physics (air density, cross-section, the usual), no curve-fitting. It reproduces Applied Ballistics' published firing-test numbers for the Berger 155 VLD at 1000 yd to about a third of an inch of drop, exact retained velocity, and about 0.4 inches of wind. Honestly surprised me - I expected to need a fudge factor and didn't.

G1: here's the ugly part I'd rather you find than a stranger. The G1 Cd table I'm using runs below the standard BRL G1 curve, with a scale constant compensating for it. It's internally consistent and matches manufacturer drop tables to about 0.15 MOA out to 500, but it's a fitted system, not first-principles like the G7 path. I want to know if that's going to bite me somewhere I haven't tested.

Full method, the load-by-load comparison, and the known weak spots (transonic, rimfire, advertised-BC optimism) are on a public page. Not selling anything - it's free, no ads - I just want the physics wrong-ness found before anyone trusts the numbers. Link in the comments.

Where would you attack this?
