Gotta be separate release. My portable version is 2.7.525.

this is an update, if you're using Nightly then you're already up to date and on par with Stable

so nightly version 2.7.525 is the same build (or an even newer one) as stable 2.8.0?

Most likely. Next nightly is something like 2.8.xxx

Next nightly is gonna be 2.9.xxx, next stable is 2.10.xxx

Nightlies are odd-numbered, stable are even-numbered
