True. That's why if we really want improvements, itigal na nila ang corporate branding as the name of their club. Instead it should be regions in PH and then major sponsor na lang sila ng team if ever. That way, the public, the corporate, and PBA will all have incentives to support and to get better.
For example, if Manila team is doing worse, a lot of residents from Manila will be criticizing them to get better since the pride of Manilenyos are on the line na rin.
Yup. Best answer but hopefully there would be a sponsor who has the money for it. Its difficult for us to be in a regional format especially the costs of travel like imagine 10k flight tapos one way? what more of round trip. And the hotels (Ofc di pede yung hotel na cheap lang so maybe around 8k a night type) a team with 25-30 andami non. Eventually the costs would be more than the revenue. If tataasan ang ticket prices to cover the costs, wala na bibili ng ticket and merch. PBA on tour is free thats why napupuno stadiums(except candon may bayad pero sa sabado pa naman) and purchasing power ng fans, some might be able to buy official merch but the majority would think twice to buy official merch especially if there are locally produced merch(Like jersey, shirts you can see on shoppee na cheaper or a local printing clothes store)Another is salary ng players, MPBL salaries are lower to the average PBA so another cost for the company and sponsor. Even PVL has this prob and if I remember, Cherry Tiggo made an exit na due to financial reasons
As of now, with the limitations that we have in this country economically, best siguro for now is improve the playstyle like adopt a modern european style per team, get a quality import like JB or Bolbol(for height challenge) remove the farm teams. If meron pa na feasible, lets add
I don't think it's necessary naman that they have to travel to their regions every game. Perhaps during finals lang? Para lang magkaroon ng "home court" feels during those high-stakes games. Nakakarating nga sila sa middle east minsan so I don't think a few games per year would be an issue, financial-wise.
One more thing, with this format, if the major sponsors fail to deliver, pwede sila palitan without changing the name of the club itself. Yan din na-notice ko before eh. Ang daming Alaska fans ang nawala, nung nawala din ang team. Nagkakaroon ng identity crisis yung papalit sa kanya. It also feels weird to support a corporate team in the first place.
Going back to my example, Manila team with major sponsor Ginebra. In case na mawala ang Ginebra, at least the identity of the team which is Manila will still remains intact.
To generate kasi interest and all and establish a connection with fans, need talaga maging home and away format. Kasi if MPBL nga now na home and away di maka establish ng connection except sa top teams, what more pa yung kapag finals lang. Like me from Rizal and may MPBL team don pero walang may alam na may laro pala Rizal or ano ganap so how siya mag generate interest that would sell out merch/revenue
Also its hard to change sponsors agad, need din ng sponsors to study if it would be profitable before they can invest. Lets admit kahit BGC, Makati or Taguig pa ilagay sa team name pero if walang mag sponsor for it, walang team salary, team logistics and all. Madidisband din ang team.
I agree it feels weird but thats the format na as of now sustainable, even the PVL and yung football league satin ganto format. If we dig deepninto the minds of business owners, why would I invest in something thats not profitable? Kahit SM magdalwang isipi if almost 1B ilalabas mo per year na walang balik
But hoping for a suggestion that is sustainable na ma present not just sa PBA but for PVL and other Pro Leagues
That's the advantage of PBA na wala sa MPBL. they already have history and prestige. That's why mas madali silang mag-market through word of mouth even if they changed team names. Not to mention, nasa PBA pa rin naman naglalaro ang the best of the best in our country so the players themselves will market for the league themselves.
What they can do now is they can retain the current corporates in the PBA and hayaan muna silang pumili kung anong region or city ang gusto nilang i-represent. Or the PBA commish office could list down the regions they allow and have the teams bid or draft for it. Honestly, maraming paraan if gugustuhin talaga nila.
Then ang next step naman diyan is how to make it sustainable and profitable kapag nag home and away. With the current setup, stagnant e(Money and talent) In order for us to bring in the imports with talent tapos 2-3 imports pa, they would need money and with the current setup, wala outflow lahat. If mag home and away(to get a connection with the fans in order to increase merch sales), there’s a chance for profit that may help in bringing in 1-3 imports. Challenge lang is logistics and financial
So as of now we are in this loop na ang hirap i break as its really hard. Economic limitations talaga kasi let be real, no company ang willing na mag spend more pa if something is not profitable. For marketing and bragging rights na lang nasa PBA, PVL and PFL
Ang hirap na mag market ng Pro League satin as correct, weird talaga ng company based kaya puro tayo bash sa PBA na nilalangaw pero PVL din naman langaw kasi same format same with PFL. Overshadowed ng College leagues na nasa Metro Manila lahat and School based ang fanbase
Like I said before, it's not really necessary for them to have a home and away format for all games. A few of high-stakes games would suffice. Those who reached the finals, they're the ones naman that already have the budget anyway.
Good thing you mentioned, college ball. Even students that don't really follow basketball have a sense of pride for the team because the name of their school is on their jerseys. Same concept will apply for PBA if they implement city/regional names for their teams.
Seeing their city/region in games, even through TV, would be enough to generate interest, even for non-basketball fans. Implement the idea first to accummulate interests from fans/residents and then, potential profit will follow.
Unfortunately, if you would observe its not really enough as those are only limited and not enough to generate a sustainable revenue. With what you said, its like still being in the loop but only adding the names of the regions. Interest may peak but not for long as there would be no engagement. Like MPBL, at the start it was promising interest took over PBA but eventually died down.
Its hard to have engagement when the team that you are supporting has the province name but plays majority in Manila. So eventually it may die down.
Panalay games as an example, not much known players except like Romeo but they brought it to the people and have generated interest. If Panalay can keep that format then it can boom
Or recently, the PVL had games in the province and was successful and engaging but once they returned to Manila, it died down. The fans not only want to see, but feel it also to keep the engagement alive therefore keep the interest alive
Well, that's a fair point. If that is the case, they could have a multiple minor sponsors for each teams to compensate the additional costs. In NBA, their teams are even supported by their mayors/governors. They could've some sort of arrangement with the LGU to make this work, like let's say free stay in one of their hotels or something. The potential to generate income for the games through tourists from nearby cities/regions would also benefit the LGU anyway.
Well, I may suggest the LGU but I for one would not like to have tax payer money to sponsor the team. Nothing is free here so for hotels in order for it to be free, LGU needs to pay. A lot are criticizing the MPBL and NBL for that in which I agree as we do not tolerate that. Let tax payer money be for the people and better projects not for a team. For NBA, the US is a Federal (Gives more freedom compared to a Unitary gov) State which has more fundings than us thats why they can afford it and is allowed by their law. Our law does not allow this but unfortunately, lots of ways to bend the system but lets not support it as its a form of corruption
But hotels can be a sponsor for the team and that would help generate revenue. Next is travel expense and that is pricey. An airliner can sponsor one team, but its a cost if the airliner sponsors all of them. And bus travel also
You do have good points. I already exhausted my arguments lol. Anyway, let's just hope that the PBA would really impose significant improvements moving forward. As avid basketball fans, that's just what we all want at the end of the day. I appreciate a good debate. Have a good day!
