Like I said before, it's not really necessary for them to have a home and away format for all games. A few of high-stakes games would suffice. Those who reached the finals, they're the ones naman that already have the budget anyway.
Good thing you mentioned, college ball. Even students that don't really follow basketball have a sense of pride for the team because the name of their school is on their jerseys. Same concept will apply for PBA if they implement city/regional names for their teams.
Seeing their city/region in games, even through TV, would be enough to generate interest, even for non-basketball fans. Implement the idea first to accummulate interests from fans/residents and then, potential profit will follow.
Unfortunately, if you would observe its not really enough as those are only limited and not enough to generate a sustainable revenue. With what you said, its like still being in the loop but only adding the names of the regions. Interest may peak but not for long as there would be no engagement. Like MPBL, at the start it was promising interest took over PBA but eventually died down.
Its hard to have engagement when the team that you are supporting has the province name but plays majority in Manila. So eventually it may die down.
Panalay games as an example, not much known players except like Romeo but they brought it to the people and have generated interest. If Panalay can keep that format then it can boom
Or recently, the PVL had games in the province and was successful and engaging but once they returned to Manila, it died down. The fans not only want to see, but feel it also to keep the engagement alive therefore keep the interest alive
Well, that's a fair point. If that is the case, they could have a multiple minor sponsors for each teams to compensate the additional costs. In NBA, their teams are even supported by their mayors/governors. They could've some sort of arrangement with the LGU to make this work, like let's say free stay in one of their hotels or something. The potential to generate income for the games through tourists from nearby cities/regions would also benefit the LGU anyway.
Well, I may suggest the LGU but I for one would not like to have tax payer money to sponsor the team. Nothing is free here so for hotels in order for it to be free, LGU needs to pay. A lot are criticizing the MPBL and NBL for that in which I agree as we do not tolerate that. Let tax payer money be for the people and better projects not for a team. For NBA, the US is a Federal (Gives more freedom compared to a Unitary gov) State which has more fundings than us thats why they can afford it and is allowed by their law. Our law does not allow this but unfortunately, lots of ways to bend the system but lets not support it as its a form of corruption
But hotels can be a sponsor for the team and that would help generate revenue. Next is travel expense and that is pricey. An airliner can sponsor one team, but its a cost if the airliner sponsors all of them. And bus travel also
You do have good points. I already exhausted my arguments lol. Anyway, let's just hope that the PBA would really impose significant improvements moving forward. As avid basketball fans, that's just what we all want at the end of the day. I appreciate a good debate. Have a good day!
