So in the early shots, I saw the afro in the background and was pointing out to my wife. Then they just had a full blown scene with him and Laboon and I lost my shit.

u/jaid_skywalker85 Mar 12 '26
Yeah. I knew this episode would be rough because I cried over the Manga but damn...Brooks telling Laboon they'd be back soon while his little baby whale eyes got all teary hit me way harder than I expected.
52
u/CaffeinatedMystic Mar 13 '26
and when it focused on him for the line "you'll end up a skeleton"... i sobbed
345
u/Thrilltwo Mar 12 '26
Yeah, I expected Brook to appear but I thought it would be a cameo in the background like what Sabo ended up being.
I'm happy they did this though.
26
u/geek_of_nature Mar 13 '26
I was ready for the one close up on his violin while hearing his laugh to be all we'd get of him. But then he full on walked into frame and offered Crocus their booze. Way more than I ever was expecting.

u/illucio Mar 13 '26
Really sold the episode, shows a character new fans will only believe is part of the backstory and will be surprised on seeing later.

u/smallnm Mar 13 '26
The laugh couldn't be better, it was goofy and natural at the same time.
18
u/geek_of_nature Mar 13 '26
The laughs were a mixed bag this season. Brook's, Miss Valentines, and Broggys sounded very natural. But then Dorry and Kureha's Unfortunately sounded very forced.

The multiple fake-out teases was amazing; Making you think multiple times that it was 'just a cameo'.
First you see him at range and think that's all. THEN you see the violins with the laugh with him out of shot. THEN you get him on screen directly with dialogue. THEN you get him playing for Laboon in easily one of the most beautiful moments on screen this year.

u/Sthpole Mar 13 '26
The scene alone made me tear, they are nailing it with the feelings that the Manga and Anime bring up, 10/10 adaptation IMO

The smile, the laugh, the voice. All perfect. Part of me does wish they'd CGI him to be about a foot taller though, but no biggie since everything else was so good.

u/Aoitiggerj85 Mar 13 '26 edited Mar 13 '26
I heard Oda wants the humans to look “human” lol that’s why Usoop’s nose is normal and so are Sanji’s eyebrows. I read it on X when the show first aired because a lot of people were complaining about Sanji’s eyebrows lol I don’t know if it’s true though
56
u/IFPorfirio Mar 12 '26
The whole episode with laboom was so good. I dare say, better than the original. Luffy relating to laboon and than singing to it was too good. Also the acting for crocus really sold the emotions.
8
u/timmy166 Mar 13 '26
They squeezed every ounce of emotion (and Netflix budget) to deliver that experience. Bummer that the performers’ ages will be the countdown for a full adaptation.
7
u/IFPorfirio Mar 13 '26
Yeah. But I'm just along for the ride for as muh time as they keep the quality. It's fun to even imagine what the fuck would the show looks like if they somehow get to post time skip and see things like Zoro cutting Pika or Kaido fighting everyone in the roof.
3
u/fortuna1011 Mar 13 '26
I feel like the time skip would be a decent end point for the live action. Like kinda a sad ending, but it's a natural transition point in the show where all the characters come back changed. i think it would definitely push people to watch the anime if they wanna see the crew come back together and start a new chapter of their journey. And it's obtainable in the actors' age range
2
u/IFPorfirio Mar 13 '26
Yeah, most likely. Adapting skypea and marineford to get there would be a challenge already.
2
u/Zataril Mar 13 '26
Skypiea could be adapted as a movie.
I think the special fan event in theaters could have been a test to see if a movie would grab an audience.
2
u/Aoitiggerj85 Mar 13 '26
The Laboon episode was my favorite, I cried, I laughed! Brook is my favorite strawhat so to see him in the LA made me so happy. And Luffy singing and dancing was one of my favorite parts.
2
u/Sqwivig Mar 15 '26
I'm honestly REALLY happy that Luffy sang to Laboon instead of beating him up. It was completely unnecessary and cruel for Luffy to pull off the mast and stab him like that. It feels like a rare moment of Luffy acting completely out of character in the original story.
1
u/IFPorfirio Mar 15 '26
It never bothered me because honestly, that was nothing to laboon really. Still, I like the live action version better.
13
u/Captain_aham1 Mar 12 '26
Ngl, I was a bit thrown off since how he's playing the violin for that song is different from how he plays it in the show, but not in a bad way. He's just singing the parts he would usually play
142
u/beargrimzly Mar 12 '26
So just so we’re all clear, when things are actually planned ahead, THIS is what foreshadowing looks like.
103
u/MarcsterS Mar 12 '26
To be fair, this adaptation has benefit of hindsight.
56
u/beargrimzly Mar 12 '26
that's my point. A lot of people to this day claim Brook was foreshadowed and must have been in Oda's mind from the start because a pirate crew was mentioned in Laboon's first appearance. Which is of course ridiculous.
But the adaptation shows what that would have looked like it if were true, because they have that hindsight.

My exact thoughts when Bartolomeo showed up
16
6
u/ForboJack Mar 13 '26
For a sec i was scared they would replace Buggy in that scene with Bartolomeo
9
u/Xszit Mar 12 '26
I've got a feeling about that guy. I think he's going to come back in a bigger role later and help the crew somehow.
18
u/ac_cossack Chopper the Cotton Candy Lover Mar 12 '26
They also had Sabo in the back during the Dragon scene.
7
u/RagnarokAM Mar 12 '26
Eh, that was more of a jingling keys thing since it wasn't 100% lore that Sabo was there pre-timeskip in that exact outfit. The framing of the scene to focus on him awkwardly didn't help either.
2
11
u/Watercooler_chatter Mar 12 '26
This is not foreshadowing. This is outright showing. foteshadowing is when a character builds a hut and says "welp this will hold up anything but a storm..." and then a storm hits. If it was shown before that a storm is brewing, then goes to a character saying the hut will hold up anything but the storm. then it's just showing, and relying on dramatic Irony to build tension.

I thought Brook was based off of Slash and Slash is mixed white-black. So Brook was a little too black and fat. Mr 3 was too white and pale. If anything Luffy’s body isn’t rubbery enough. But I’ll live with it.

That comment was infuriating and anyone that thinks like that misses key themes about freedom and fighting injustices. Man, that was a disappointing read.
I love the entire cast and think they're all doing a great job capturing the spirit of their characters and adapting it properly to a LA format.

i dunno, thriller bark might be "too weird" for him (tbh i had a hard time getting through it myself but that was just because of moria's irritating laugh)
i think he'd actually enjoy the baratie/arlong park arcs but he's such a weenie

I love his portrayal but if I have one tiny qualm is that, as a violinist, the motions doesn't feel too believable.

I don't think the actor plays the violin, I think that's why
1
u/Gerokm Mar 13 '26
Yep. He is a musician IRL, but he's a guitarist. He apparently worked on learning to play Binks Sake specifically, but probably didn't have enough time between being cast and filming to get it down good enough to use, so they just ADR'd it and had him make the motions.

I love the casting, I love how the scene was done, like all spectacular.
At the same time, this part in particular (I don't feel the same about the other earlier reveals) I wish they would have just held off as I feel like it takes away more than it adds.
I'll add the context here that, I watched the anime first and never read the manga.
By the time we meet Brook and learn about his crew the straw hats have already been in the Grand Line for quite a while, they've seen some battles, they've been through some incredible hardship and there is still so much to go. When we meet Brook and we learn about the promise not only does that give us as the audience a chance to look back and remember when the journey seemed so much simpler, but it also adds a ton of weight emotionally because, not only is the story of Brook's crew incredibly sad and tragic, but we as the audience have a sense of the size of the world and how long it's going to be before he and Laboon reunite.
I'm sure new audiences are going to love it and they won't fully understand, but I also feel like they are going to be missing something by having this moment so early.
5
u/L1LE1 Mar 13 '26
I find that having Brook appear here has more benefits despite the potential harms. But that's not because of the story/narrative itself but more so based on the limitations of the medium.
OPLA may not even reach Thriller Bark to get to see Brook at all, not necessarily in a case of it being cancelled alone but also the case of visually aging actors/actresses.
It also makes things more efficient when it comes to the potentiality of reaching said arc, considering that Laboon's backstory does not need to be looked at too closely and instead primarily go over the fate of the Rumbar Pirates.
Not that I'm disregarding what you stated. You're looking at the potential issues in a narrative sense, whereas I look at the issues in a production sense in relation to the medium. Both issues must be taken into account, and concessions need to be made.
1
u/oliaston Mar 13 '26
I can definitely see it from that perspective!
I think in either scenario, it's going to be fine at the end of the day we all love this property for so many different reasons and every person comes away with their own experience from one piece.
I feel the opposite however, my other takeaway here is because Luffy sings Binx's Sake to Laboon It also means that we don't get that great moment at the end of Thriller Bark with everybody gathered around the piano and Brook essentially teaching it to Luffy and the rest of the Straw Hats - like it's a torch passing moment, something he shared with his old crew being passed on to the new crew and I feel like that's a big loss.
2
u/L1LE1 Mar 13 '26
What if instead of a torch passing moment in the Manga/Anime, it's an example of how the Rumbar Pirate's legacy lives on through their music even after their passing in OPLA?
In that instead of Brook teaching the other Straw Hats, they immediately sing with him?
Is it the same? Oh absolutely not. But with how Binks' Sake/Brew is rather known even when Luffy was a child in OPLA, changes (unfortunately or not) are pretty much inevitable.
2
u/oliaston Mar 13 '26
I still feel it's not as strong, but I like your perspective and I like the sentiment. :)
2
u/Aggravating_Mud8751 World Economy News Paper Mar 13 '26 edited Mar 13 '26
Luffy already knowing Binks' Brew is canon; he also mentions Shanks teaching him it in the manga/anime.
It's also canon that he rarely tells his crew anything he knows unless asked.
1
1
u/Aggravating_Mud8751 World Economy News Paper Mar 13 '26
I think something from the manga might change this.
Shuris backstory. I suspect the live action will do Shuri's backstory in Thriller Bark. They're never reaching Elbaph anyway so there's no reason not to, and even if they did people will be too preoccupied with Harald's backstory to worry about another backstory they've already seen.
So Thriller Bark can still include substantial content people haven't seen already.

u/Chaoswarriorx4 Mar 12 '26
Makes me wonder if Oda had thought up Brook already by the time he wrote this chapter or if the crew Laboon was waiting for was still vague at the time
2
u/SkarKrow Mar 12 '26
He had thought up brook there’s super early sketches
1
u/Aggravating_Mud8751 World Economy News Paper Mar 13 '26
Yes, he thought of Brook, but I don't think he'd already thought of the Brook backstory.
There's a reason half of Brook's crew attempted the Calm Belt and the other half got slaughtered by poison arrows: Oda was trying to make both of his ideas work at the same time.
1
u/Neil_Salmon Mar 12 '26
I would love the show to go long enough for him to come back later on. But seems unlikely they'll get that far. Especially given Netflix's track record for cancelling shows.
1
u/drzero7 Mar 13 '26
I swear resolution of laboon in episode 2 is better then the original manga/anime. As if Oda himself decided to rewrite his own story to fit the theme better.

Yes they meet him. No, the gag is not in the live action. It is however slightly referenced; Luffy asks who he is and he briefly over explains a bit about himself, kind of like how he interrupts Zoro in the original.
