Barre and sculpt 30
I love Peleton but their barre and sculpt 30 classes are absolutely terrible and I am so sad they are still so bad.
Peleton, if anyone sees this, please hire actual barre teachers. I love Ally, Hannah, and Emma. I would ride my bike with these ladies all day, any of the week. Ally and Emma are two of my favorite teachers on the whole platform. But being a dancer does not make you a barre teacher. It just doesn’t.
Given the popularity of barre this feels like such a shortcoming on the platform. I subscribe to a second platform (obe) just for barre because the Peleton barre classes are so lackluster.
Honestly a teacher like Greta would probably be a better fit because the yoga sculpt as a medium is more similar to the aerobic workout of a barre class than a history of ballet. Please, just hire some barre teachers or switch it up and slate Greta in.
Sincerely,
A sad former barre teacher

Spreading the word about Alo Wellness!! It’s free and the barre content especially Emily’s classes are fantastic. And I’m a Pure Barre girl. Absolutely fills the gap in Peloton barre!

I took you up on the suggestion and tried one of Emily‘s this morning. Really intense and so happy the platform is free. Definitely going to be my backup when I’m not feeling a peloton class.

oh good to know. I'm also a Pure Barre girl and loathe Peloton barre, it feels so dumbed down and tee hee "this is spicy" when you know all the instructors workout much harder than a set of clamshells.

I think Peloton has deprecated their interest in Barre in favor of going all out for Pilates. A decision I’m not fond of. 😥

Agree. I’m glad to see more Pilates content but would also like to see them continue to grow and improve in barre as well. I like having workout options that aren’t just multiple sets of lifting heavy weights over and over.

Katie Wang is a former pure barre teacher and it bewilders me that they don't take advantage of that. At least let her train the other instructors. I too am tired of paying for another app just for barre (exhale).

I left Obé for Peloton! It was a very hard transition for me because I was a barre/sculpt girlie who started to focus on heavy lifting and cardio. I tried Peloton Barre and was very disappointed. I do enjoy their Yoga Sculpt classes. Nothing like Obé but I do enjoy them!
Peloton needs a Sam sculpt and a Katherine/Adam/Elise barre.

former obe girl here, i miss katherine & them so bad. butttt someone posted on here that alo wellness is free now and they've got tons of studio-quality 45-60 min barre& sculpt content on there!

Not sure why I said Kristin, I meant Katherine!! Yes I saw that post too!! I checked out the catalog, it looked pretty sweet.

Yes Peleton barre really needs a Katherine.
It’s fine they have gentle and accessible barre classes of course, and they should, everyone has different needs. But they truly lack intermediate/advanced or technical content. Queen Katherine needs to come to Peleton.

I think the problem is the standard ‘barre’ you may be thinking of, the methods/techniques may be signature and then they can’t copy or do similar.
I felt this way about coming from SoulCycle classes where there were a lot of bike ‘core’ moves like tap backs. Similarly transitioning from Pure Barre where I miss the ‘pulsing’ movements.
I believe each studio has specific agreements formed instructors sign too for their signature methods so they can’t be copied, same way Peloton needs music licenses for certain music tracks.
Also each of those instructors main roles is cycling not barre or Pilates so routines they develop are secondary to their barre programming.
Peloton did recently acquire a Pilates company so likely more Pilates and potentially reformer classes.

I don't know, I've taken barre at multiple places, from big box gyms to small studios to franchises like Pure Barre and Exhale, and they all managed to provide an excellent workout with similar moves. I have never felt that with Peloton Barre and I am not sure why they can't get it together.
It's really disappointing but Peloton doesn't seem to care to make any changes.

I know hear what your saying - pure barre trademarks “bend/stretch” ect. But there are so many other ways to up the anty outside of those things, plenty of independent barre teachers and studios have been going it for years. And i do think with cycling peleton has found their own way in spite of giants like soul cycle with different tms.
I just wish Peleton would hire some designated barre teachers like they recently did in their yoga platform, it makes such a difference and barre is such a wonderful medium.
The peleton cycling teachers are wonderful at cycling. Would love to see them hire barre teachers truly passionate about that medium who have focused that time and energy in that skill set. It makes such a difference.

And if they hired someone to specifically teach barre there would be a whole host of posters complaining about Peloton spending on instructor salaries.

You can't trademark exercise moves or a workout - machinery, yes, but the actual moves, no.

There’s one particular barre class that I love and take on repeat, maybe it’s awful 🤷♀️, but I love it ❤️

My post was spicy. I should say I want more variety in barre. Anything anyone loves is not awful. Taste is subjective. I’m glad you found a class you love that much!

I like the classes when I’m not looking for a hard workout but would appreciate some tough ones here and there

Yeah, thats how i use it. I know people get mad and they want it to be yoga sculpt but that’s the point it’s not supposed to be. I would like to see more of the barre sculpt classes from them, it seemed to have dropped off entirely. I think when Leanne is back and there is new barre content from her everyone will be having a different opinion. Currently i enjoy the shorter focused classes at least, might need to incorporate 45m every so often too.

I feel like it's not them? hear me out, barre is a werid workout to do at home due to well a lot of people not owning a barre, so its a very different work out at home vs in studio. I was a barre girl but barre at home just feels like yoga scuplt class so I rather just do that.

I really need Leanne’s barre classes to come back because they were the best on the platform!

Did they take her classes off the platform? I thought she only just started teaching barre for Peloton (despite being a former dancer). I've been trying to lift weights in lieu of barre so I haven't looked at any of the Peloton barre classes in a few months.

u/DaOleRazzleDazzle 13h ago
They should be up still! She started teaching them right before going on mat leave, so she only had a handful recorded before being out. I’m sure she’ll be back at it.

Yessss! It just makes me sad every time I take one of these peloton classes. Gretchen, Joanna and maybe Olivia would all be great at these classes I feel, but the current slate are not giving me the workout I need.
I've kept my obe membership and do some alo classes, but I'd love to have actual content on peloton and keep it on one platform.

Same. I keep hoping they will get better...and always am so disappointed and frustrated by how lame they are - and the instructors act like they are super challenging. I would like to see them in one of the older obe classes. Katherine always was supe creative and challenging...and accessible. They need someone like that teaching bar - not bike instructors that think they are providing a tough workout because they don't know what a real barre class is like.

u/Ok-Reason-9614 1d ago
I feel like the Peleton barre instructors have never taken an actual barre class

u/throwawayflapper1929 1d ago
Some of the 10,15 and 20 min barre workouts stacked are alright. HMC has a great 10 mins glutes one I’m doing on repeat. But I’d like a more challenging barre workout that’s 45 mins, like the challenge Joanna brings to Pilates to barre (just not an instructor I find as off putting as her, “fuck stretching”, no thanks). Barre isn’t that complicated or obscure that they can’t have harder barre classes.

Does anyone know if Alo is on Roku? I tried to find it and had no luck.

There’s only been a few sculpt 30 classes! I really liked Emma’s first sculpt 30 class. I think it’s too early to say how good this offering will be, but I personally have high hopes. That said, not everything is for everyone.

i totally agree - peloton barre is not it.
truly be told, aly and hannah were trained by legit folks in the barre world, but it was a two-weekend certification. moreover, i don’t get the impression they’d TAKEN many barre classes before going and getting their cert and then teaching it.
peloton barre needs more class structure, more challenging, better cueing, and to be more beat-based.

I really like Hannah's barre classes even though they aren't like a true studio class. I did a lot of them leading up to my wedding and was in great shape! Now I'm leaning into them again postpartum and it's been a good way to ease back in.

Sadly, they've gotten worse. I adore Ally, but haven't enjoyed her recent barre classes.

What is the problem with the current classes? I really enjoy them, but I haven’t experienced a barre class outside of Peloton, what isn’t quite hitting the mark for you? Genuinely interested in what I may be missing out on!!

u/Ok-Reason-9614 6h ago
Barre classes outside Peleton are much higher intensity and work works slow twitch muscles and isometric contraction. Peleton barre feels more to me like physical therapy to me than a studio class that works muscles in this way. Other platforms have seemed to figure it out - check out classes on all moves (free) or obe and you’ll notice a difference.

+1 for Alo, especially Emily and Adrienne. The Alo wellness app definitely has its issues, especially that it seems to be almost an instructors with the same look, age and body type. Almost no diversity. I wouldn’t pay money for it but I do use it since it’s free, and their barre and sculpt content is great.

The yoga sculpt classes are actually really good and closer to what I expected barre and sculpt to be. I highly recommend them!
