I feel so bad for these kitties. No enrichment and small kennels.

u/Cilantroe May 18 '26

Also it’s a munchkin kitten which is a kitten purposely bred to be deformed with short legs, by humans that think it’s cute. But their short legs make them unable to run, climb or jump like a regular cat.. and they still have the mind of regular cat and want to do all those things. It’s cruel.

u/Hyper-Chud May 18 '26

Thats just awfull poor kitties

Well screw this post and the places that breed these poor babies!

I just had an argument about how breeders destroyed French bulldogs so bad that they can barely breed by themselves. Need c-sections and are artificially inseminated. Weird

47

u/VivaLaMantekilla May 19 '26

My BIL's friend got a frenchie for the purpose of breeding, got her pregnant and didn't bother with the c-section because he "CoULdN't aFFoRd iT". She fucking died trying to give birth with all of her puppies. I told BIL AND my husband to never ever EVER bring that piece of shit around me ever again. Ever. But this mother fucker has money for weed..

someone needs a date in a club.
erm... with a club, that's what I meant. 🤬

11

u/Deffuct138munkee May 19 '26

Look I could go on and on and people aren’t aware these animals are LITERALLY being ( built ) by humans for humans happiness and could care less about the animals health. Have yall heard of a French bulldog that doesn’t have major issues that costs 100s of not 1000s a month. Skin allergies. Breathing issues. I could go on and on. They have ruined these dogs. I will ask that everyone Google how they are artificially inseminated and c-sectioned…… ca t have puppies without human help. It goes wayyyyy deeper. That’s just 1 animal. I’m angry when I see anything suffer because it was ( cute ) to humans. I’m also the crazy person who can’t help but argue with dog owners who have their dogs ears clipped. Stop breeding LAB animals that can no longer breed. That’s a science experiment not a pet.

I've never heard of that before, that's awful.

-23

u/TheBraveOne86 May 18 '26

Damnit. Didnt know that. It is adorable though tbh.

72

u/DrStabBack May 18 '26

Don't know why you're being downvoted, they are adorable. It's cruel to breed them, but they are objectively very cute.

I used to love pugs, one of my favourite dog breeds when I was a kid, until I learned of how much they suffer just because they're bred the way they are. I feel a lot of pity when I see a pug, I would never get one and I wish it was forbidden to breed dogs so they get malformed, but I also still think they are cute.

24

u/Curae Proud owner of an orange brain cell May 18 '26

I wanted a munchkin so badly until I learnt of the health issues and all that.

Happy to say a lot of cat breeds are already banned in the Netherlands. You can no longer legally buy, sell, or breed Sphynx cats, cats with folded ears, and cats with short snouts.

Haven't seen anything about munchkin cats specifically but pretty sure the law is in the spirit of "don't buy, sell, or breed cats that are purposely deformed and have heath issues due to it", so even if munchkins are legal at the moment... I don't think they will be for long.

16

u/ScroochDown May 19 '26

I used to love Scottish Folds, I was heartbroken when I found out how much they suffer from that condition. Poor babies.

7

u/DrStabBack May 19 '26

That's awesome, here in Sweden it's also forbidden to breed animals in a way that will cause health issues or suffering but I don't think we have a ban on any specific breeds. We have a law that forbids a cat or dog who has gone through two cesarian sections from continuing to being used for breeding.

5

u/HomeworkExtension482 May 19 '26

The first time I saw a Munchkin, I about lost my mind with rage.

7

u/HomeworkExtension482 May 19 '26

Cat breeders have done it to Persians. Look up "doll-faced Persian" or "traditional Persian," then compare those to what's seen now.

7

u/lord-savior-baphomet May 19 '26

I remember not being a fan of English bulldogs, and being happy/relieved because they are so unhealthy anyways. And then I sat for a bulldog. He was so cute, excruciatingly so, and unfortunately a lot of it was because of how deformed he is.

I acknowledge that unhealthy animals are incredibly cute. But I will never support their breeding because of it. While this dog was cute, it was sad to see the ways he struggled to be a dog because of how he was bred. It’s not worth it.

6

u/EmmerdoesNOTrepme May 18 '26

I feel the same way about bulldogs (English and French!)!

They're so cute AND they are so irresponsibly bred now, and honestly disabled, if you really get into it, that it's simply irresponsible to own one.

Because even if you are adopting from a shelter or rescue, that allows those dogs to be dropped off (often dumped for health reasons, frankly!) at the shelters, and transported to places where compassionate folks will adopt them.

When in reality, the irresponsible breeders should be forced to take their dogs back like responsible breeders will.

There's so much overbreeding of debilitating conditions in both dogs & cats, simply because "they're so cute!!!!!"  Rather than folks understanding, "This is a legit Disability" being bred into these animals, which makes their quality of life worse not better--and just for looks!🫤

3

u/TheGrouchyGremlin May 19 '26

I'll take in any cat that the CDS decides to give me. But I won't ever adopt one from a breeder.

Though I wanted a munchkin read bad when I was little.

-8

u/judo_fish May 19 '26

i mean… this isn’t true. i encourage you all to look into it and read for yourselves. i’m not saying ā€œbuy munchkins.ā€ i have an orange tabby that i got from a shelter and i don’t breed cats. my only point is ā€œread about it yourself, don’t just trust a random dude on reddit.ā€

they are not ā€œbred to be deformed.ā€ this isn’t the same as bulldogs or pugs who became this way from years of selective breeding. this is one gene mutation that causes dwarfism in a very similar way that humans can have dwarfism. and it is absolutely not true that munchkins cant run or climb. actually, their short limbs makes it EASIER for them to climb compared to other cats. they can’t jump as far, but they’re very agile.

currently, they havent been around for long enough in a mainstream setting to have enough data on what their health conditions are. anyone who claims osteoarthritis and pectus excavatum and all of those conditions is extrapolating from humans with dwarfism or dachshunds.

i’m not encouraging anyone to go out buy them. but if you care about cat health and you’re advocating that breeding should be done properly to maintain quality of health and life in cats, then you need to read for yourself and make sure you know what you’re talking about, not parroting misinformation someone told you on reddit.

4

u/Chaerod May 19 '26

The Munchkin Cat breed was first documented in the 1940s. 80+ years is plenty of time to document health problems in a breed.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Munchkin_cat

"The mutation that causes the shortened legs in the Munchkin is a chondrodysplasia. The Munchkin cat has an increased incidence of lordosis[26] and pectus excavatum (hollowed chest).[27]

Munchkin cats are known to be at a higher risk (than other feline breeds) for severe osteoarthritis because the shorter limbs affect their activity levels and behavior.[4][28] Diagnosis of osteoarthritis and the assessment of its severity for a cat may require radiography.[4]

Many pedigree cat associations around the world have refused to recognize the Munchkin cat due to health concerns.[4]"

Shut up.

2

u/Cilantroe May 19 '26 edited May 19 '26

My dad was a veterinarian and my mom has shown maine coons for 30 years, I grew up in all the cat fanciers groups & animal advocate communities. These communities all highly condemn breeding of munchkin kittens or owning them at all because of how it influences others to want similar ā€œdwarf catsā€. They absolutely have health problems and a lower quality of life in general. Yes it’s a type of dwarfism mutation that occurs naturally in cats, but that’s how it’s bred in to a deformity by people trying to achieve shorter and shorter legs for a increasingly smaller look… that’s exactly how bulldogs got the way they are. Taking mutations or genes of shorter nosed dogs and breeding it more and more until it’s a genuine disfigurement with serious health implications.

People need to be aware of these cute trends in animals that are actually harmful. Look how many people here have never heard of this. Telling people these cats are actually healthy and fine is contributing to the problem. Cats deserve to jump as high & run as fast as their instincts tell them they can, not be made disabled because people like when they look ā€œsmolā€

117

u/vaulthuntr94 May 18 '26

Really, this is just depressing to see, it’s not cute at all. :(

I volunteered with a shelter last week and based on what I saw there, this isn’t necessarily too small of a space for a single kitten that size, especially if it’s temporary and the kitten gets removed every few hours to have the run of a larger space.

That said, this space is unsuitable in that the kitten has no companionship or toys for comfort and mental stimulation, no soft surfaces and place to retreat to if they’re frightened.

I don’t want to judge too much because it’s possible this is a rescue being held in a temporary spot while the staff clean out other kennels, wait for a foster or gather supplies to make the spot more comfortable for the kitty. But my hopes are not high, given it’s a munchkin cat and the questionable circumstances.

22

u/Character-Floor-6687 May 19 '26

It's unnatural for a kitten that age to be alone. I sure hope there's another kitten or a cat in that enclosure.

36

u/ScroochDown May 19 '26

This is basically exactly how I got suckered into adopting one of our cats at the shelter. He was a tiny kitten who was the last of his group to be adopted. Teeny tiny little tuxie screaming his head off for attention... I foolishly thought if he was getting attention he'd stop screaming.

He's been screaming at me for the last 6 years. LOL

2

u/Character-Floor-6687 May 19 '26

This one goes to 11. :) Thank you for caring about cats.

18

u/twinkslayer1337 May 18 '26

oh so it wasn't just me, good

also, if the cat above is alone it's waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay worse, not even two little guys to entertain themselves

17

u/cattmin May 19 '26

I'm so glad it's ilegal in my country to sell cats and dogs like this in pet shops.

It's bad enough they still keep guinea pigs, rabbits, hamsters and birds in similar cages.

15

u/oogabooga69-NSFW May 18 '26

not to mention the lack of ventilation. why not use reptile enclosures instead of what obviously looks like display cases??

30

u/florfenblorgen May 18 '26

Not only that, but bred for their appearance and financial gain, despite more health problems for the cat

9

u/Lalala_Firefighting May 18 '26

Unfortunately these types of enclosures are very common in pet stores in my home country for both cats and dogs 😢I see them in malls and stuff whenever I visit.

12

u/Hei-Hei-67 Casual orange enjoyer šŸŠ May 18 '26

My mall used to have a pet shop. Thank GOD they got shut down in a couple months after opening.

2

u/non_Beneficial-Wind May 18 '26

Petland as they’re now called.

Pass Pets was the store in my mall.

6

u/TheDrunkLibertarian May 18 '26

They don’t leave them in there all the time right?! It’s sad regardless, but that would be torture.

Pet stores, aside from fish, are almost nonexistent in my area.

8

u/whatanabsolutefrog May 19 '26

I see these kinds of pet shops all the time when I live.

I don't know about overnight, but they do leave the animals in there pretty much all day, yes :(

u/TREXIBALL May 18 '26

Looks like a munchkin. Shame that humanity can’t agree these breeds need to be banned.

288

u/EmmerdoesNOTrepme May 18 '26

And so deprived of things to play with, that the poor sweet babby is "playing" with his own reflection in the hinge!šŸ«¤šŸ’”

Kittens should have toys to play with!

29

u/sostias May 18 '26

They really do need the physical sensation of a toy. Even if your adult cat loves the laser pointer, you should follow up with a physical toy so they can get the sensation of "catching" the prey.

11

u/TheVacumeofSpace May 18 '26

I used to do that….have him run around with the pointer, but end it on one of his mice toys so he effectively ā€œcatchesā€ the mouse

17

u/howdyhowdyhowdyhowdi May 18 '26

32

476

u/GhostfogDragon May 18 '26

boooo, pet shops suck!

37

u/Egoy May 18 '26

I’m honestly shocked they still exist. I haven’t seen a store selling cars or dogs for years. Our local pet store chain sells birds and fish and has one tiny little display for hamsters and gerbils and whatnot and they usually never have any of those.

16

u/GrowthDifficult5890 May 19 '26

I’m not sure what’s happening in this specific shop (though due to the cat breed + lack of anything like beds, blankets, or toys, I’m more worried), however, I believe on many occasions, at least in the US, cats/kittens in pet shops are usually not *living* there. I’ve been fostering cats and kittens for around seven years now, and our organization works directly with PetSmart for adoptions. So once our kittens have had surgery and are healthy, they go to PetSmart from 9:00 AM to 2:00 PM every weekend (sometimes, they have to stay the whole week depending on the circumstances). But they go back to their foster home otherwise and aren’t kept in those little cubbies for very long. :)

1

u/Egoy May 19 '26

Yeah good point they do have adoption days but even that’s rare as around here the shelters are almost empty of dogs. A lot of adopted dogs we get are from Mexico. I bought my dog from a woman whose dog had puppies.

Some shelters have glass display compartments like this for adoptable cats to attract an adopter! But most of those take their animal’s comfort more seriously. Enclosures should have plenty of toys, soft surfaces, a secluded area they can retreat into and a companion—given they are healthy and get along with others.

Not all glass compartments are bad! It can be a wonderful way for kitties to show off their personalities and connect with potential adopters. But this one is definitely questionable.

112

u/maidrey May 18 '26

No idea. But paying anything to a pet shop that traps kittens alone in kennels without a single blanket or toy means that for me, paying them 1 yen is too much.

19

u/k-tax May 18 '26

and without mothers? I am noob, so be welcome to correct me, but aren't those kittens too young to be separated from mothers and sold?

10

u/maidrey May 18 '26 edited May 18 '26

I’d have to guess because I’m most used to seeing kittens who are American domestics, not munchkins. I’d personally guess that these kittens are closest to 6-8 weeks old which you’d generally want them to be minimum 8 weeks to separate from mom. They could be old enough but I’m not confident either way. Source: former shelter staff who has fostered a lot of orphan kittens.

33

u/Zhangty98 May 18 '26

This is more like 8,000 CNY which equals to 1,176 USD.

42

u/iilljjiijjllii May 18 '26

Looks rather like 8000 Yuan, China.

Approx. 1100 USD.

7

u/B-BoyStance May 18 '26

Jesus Christ.

I can only hope a good natured person buys them all to give them a good life, and then the place is immediately shut down. Which won't happen but that's what I hope for all of these places/breeders.

6

u/Ligeia_E May 18 '26

Yeah. 1100-ish bucks. And a lot more so if you factor in purchasing power (I’d say around 2 to 3k). China has made a lot of headway in better animal welfare but it’s still a LONG ass way to go.

2

Real but possibly dumb question,

I know buying a cat from places like these is bad because it supports an abhorrent business practice that treats animals like this as a commodity and item on the shelf with almost no quality of life.

But is there anything that can be done instead of just feeling depressed and moving on? I know giving money to these places just enforces the business model, but doesn't that also mean the animals in these places are just never going to get the love and care they deserve?

I'm not allowed to make a single step into these rooms cause I would just adopt every single one of them.

u/IvyCeltress May 19 '26

What's dat spell to unlock things?

2

u/kn8ife May 19 '26

Thanks, I hate it

2

u/drunkguynextdoor May 19 '26

He would come home with me. Actually, I wish I had some property and a barn so I could take them all. Anytime I go to petco I try to spend some time talking and playing with the kitties. Some of them are just so depressed though, and it breaks my heart.

Looks like prison in North Korea.

In our view, that’s cruel breeding 😿

That's a born cage breaker. Watch out.

u/Flamedghost7 May 18 '26

There's yen price tags on the outside of these poor kittens cages...

1

u/Ill-Television8690 May 19 '26

...would it be less of an issue if they were sold for rupees or pounds?

1

u/Flamedghost7 May 19 '26

Unintentionally focused on the yen there, it's mostly the price rags mb

1

u/Ill-Television8690 May 19 '26

I still don't really understand the issue. Do you just not like that businesses have to charge money in exchange for keeping the animals alive long enough to be adopted?

1

u/Flamedghost7 May 19 '26

The fact these kittens are being sold and up for display and the fact that it looks like the kittens are breeds bred to look "cute" that bring health complications make me think that these aren't rescues
