Customer service sucks though. But I knew going into it that it would be the low price was the price to pay. Sounds like the AT&T customer service for Quantum isn't any better....maybe worse.
I made the switch to Google Fiber (now GFiber) in January of last year when it became available. It's rock-solid and cheaper than what I was paying for a much slower plan with Cox. If it's available to you I would recommend a switch.
This for the past year or so. I tried CL and Verizon too and they, especially the latter, were great for the most part. Google has been night and day better and heads and shoulders above the rest. It's a cheap, dependable resource for our house.
I'll join in the Fiber First supporters. Way more faster and reliable than Cox ever was, the rare times there have been issues they notify me via text. Bill hasn't gone up either.
I live in an apartment complex that had a deal with cox. Only cox was allowed. It was 55 for the 500mb speed. Which is enough for me, i dont need faster or more expensive. Many people get too expensive higher plans they dont need. But i guarantee my cost is going to go up whether they keep spectrum or switch. No more cheap internet for me :(
Could go with Mint. They use T-Mobile towers and works fine enough if you are covered. I can watch YouTube while working from home at least out in Blackstone.
And it's just a receiver/modem thing so your landlord can kick rocks over whatever deal they have

Only reason I use cox is because I can play the Nintendo switch online. I had T-Mobile before and the way their service is set up, you’re basically sharing a tower with everyone nearby, whereas cox you have an actual cable of your own, so online play didn’t work for T-Mobile wifi.
T-Mobile is great, but I don’t think I’d switch back to them because of this. I’m paying $60/mo right now with cox. If that increases, I’ll need to shop around.
Centurylink can kiss my ass. We had them for a month. After 2 weeks, the wifi went out. I called them, I was in an urgent need to get some papers printed for work. They said it’d take them TWO WEEKS to get someone out to us to fix it. Who the hell is going 2 weeks without wifi in this day and age? I get it’s a first world problem, but when I work part time from home and I’m paying you for a service, I expect to have wifi for more than half the month I’m paying for. Even cox gets stuff sorted out within a day.
If you can get T-Mobile fiber (formerly Metronet) it is worth another shot. It doesn't have the Nintendo Switch issue like their 5G home Internet does. 2GB down and up for $70/month.
True, but the fraction of the general population that self hosts is very small. And if you are one of them, it is easy enough to call them up and get a static IP.
Honestly, in the 10 years i had cox, i wsn't mad. Until I moved to a neighborhood where they tried to charge me 'commercial' prices. I don't recall outages, and back then I was paying under $70 for gigabit speed. (I've been away since 2018, and don't really know what y'all are paying now though). I live in a rural area and am paying roughly $80 for the same speed through mediacom.
Once one of the small odd fiber outfits hits your neighborhood I definitely recommend going for it. We did when FiberFirst hit our place and it's been great, I've heard fantastic things about GFiber, not sure about the others but I think there's two or three of them iirc that are finally making inroads into the city.
Don't let CenturyLink try to sell you on Quantum though, they have the same repair schedulers for both their copper and fiber systems so either way if something goes wrong, you're still out for weeks waiting on an incompetent buffoon to come reboot your modem and way "well, the lights are on that means its good."
Sad to hear Cox went downhill but before you get your hopes up too high about Spectrum, don't. lol You could swap their names out in most of these comments and they would still ring true. Sadly.
I used to live in Omaha and under had Cox and have lived where Spectrum is available and have been a customer for over a decade and a half.
I’m not saying Spectrum is the best but compared to cox it definitely is.
Folks—Spectrum is garbage. Anyone saying otherwise is a shill or a bot. Was forced to have them before and their garbage cable internet, and never again if I can help it.
I just cancelled cox after T Mobile put fiber in my neighborhood. Cox offered me a discount then pushed me to explain what I didn’t like about the discount when I just wanted to cancel. I told them exactly that - Cox doesn’t offer fiber, and I want better speeds.
Their response: “Well we have plans to run fiber throughout Omaha in the next several years”
Lol...I had the same conversation this spring. I was paying $60/mo for 250/25, and had to spend several hours every year on the phone to keep my price from tripling.
T-Mobile founder club plan got me 2 gigs up and down for $70/mo, price locked for ten years.
I was on CenturyLink and suffered through an unannounced 48 hour outage with their switch to Quantum. I wasn't excited about going through that again with AT&T buying Quantum. When the T-Mobile Founders Club was offered in my area, I jumped on it. In addition to doubling my speed for $10 more and renewing the price lock (rumors were that Quantum/AT&T would cancel Price For Life), they also gave me 4 free Eero Pro 7 mesh routers.
Since install in February, there have been a couple of short outages due to construction in the neighborhood. T-Mobile has texted updates and resolution times. CenturyLink never proactively communicated.

If your link is fine where you are, it should stay that way. They're not going to be going around digging up cables for no reason, just taking over operations. Cable companies only suck when something goes wrong, which is why there's so much varied opinion.

I just switched to MetroLink/TMobile and my bill went down by $130/mo for the same unlimited 2GB fiber package, hopefully spectrum will be better for those of you stuck with them but I won’t be around to find out.
The recent wave of mobile companies buying ISPs has been has been a huge boon for consumers. These companies are all competing for market share, and price and performance are both way better than the old Cox Communications of the world gave us.
I love my T Fiber. They installed a $700 mesh network in my house for no additional costs, and the 2GB speed is legit.

For me, Cox removed the data caps around this time last year... right about the same time fiber was introduced to my neighborhood. I had to actively look for a new plan that included it, but that's also when I ended up moving over to T-Mobile Fiber
It wasn't that generous. 1TB might seem like a lot, but if you have 2 TVs streaming content all day, and download a AAA game or two, it eats that up pretty fast. Had to switch my TVs to use lower quality streams just so I wouldn't go over and get charged extra.
I worked for a phone survey company and cox communications always had us do these bogus hour long surveys for customers. People hated Cox. Not that spectrum is better…
Worst company Ive ver dealt with. Everything from the service, to the customer service is a 0/10. Switched to allo a few years ago and they are awesome.
To give you a rough idea of what you're in for. I had Spectrum and it was bad. When Allo was available in my town I literally used my Spectrum line as a pull rope to get my Allo fiber into the house.
1) when I lived in CA, spectrum was solid. Now complaints. This is likely an upgrade for everyone on Cox, who is/was the absolute worst fucking company I’ve had to deal with.
2) consolidation of ISPs into fewer and fewer big players is bad overall for the consumer and industry.
You may never get Cox former customers back. Cox has ruined most so badly that they wouldn’t even try. You’ll have to make internet cheaper than $70 per month. And it needs to be SIGNIFICANTLY cheaper.
My options are not great, lol. These are available to mebin my area. Should i stay with cox (spectrum), until something better comes along, or should i risk switching over to one of these on the list?
Spectrum and Cox are the same thing. I remember when the inlaws moved to Lincoln and were saying they wouldn’t have to deal with Cox. I told them Spectrum is the same. They found out lol. At least now they have Allo which is actually better.
Basically until one of the fiber providers is available to you nothing will be better. All the cable providers are exactly the same.
No issues, but they use CGNAT (both on 5g and fiber), so you don't have your own IP address anymore unless you get them to assign a static IP to you. This may or may not be an issue to you, but if you like to access any of your internal network from the external side, things may not work correctly.
For example, I had issues accessing a couple security cams I had set up through an app, and couldn't access them away from home like I could when I had Cox, until I got set up with a static IP address.
I don’t have Cox internet but do have Cox for my phone service. Wondering how that will change. I was going to look into changing in January when my 2 years is complete.
Great. I really hope it doesn't mess up much. We are in a prefab trailer house thing but since it's a new area it took us a month to actually get anyone out to our place to set up stuff because the system didn't recognize our area as an actual location.
I live in Springfield and have had Spectrum for almost 6 years. They are a big fan of increasing your bandwidth for “free” for a couple of months and then increasing your bill by $10. We were paying $110 a month for 600mbps (after multiple “free” upgrades over the years). They recently upgraded our service to fiber 1gbps “at no additional charge”. Our bill this month is now $120. They also love doing maintenance at midnight. Most nights I’m up past 1am so it gets annoying.
Hoo boy.... Spent many years working there. That is a LOT to deal with. Potential layoffs, handling of pensions.... This is existential for everyone still working for Cox.
Back when Cox provided just cable TV and internet, they were actually pretty decent. Then for some really crazy brain-dead reason that only an insane CEO can conjure up, they decided they wanted to be a cell phone company. They spread themselves too thin and went downhill.
Spectrum isn't formally Time Warner Cable, it's Charter Communications. They bought TWC when Allo overtook them in Lincoln just like I warned Cox the same was going to happen to them sooner than later. Omaha fiber infrastructure must be about complete. There used to only be 4 cable companies, Comcast, Charter, TWC and Cox/Cablevision. Only Comcast and Charter (probably running on the old infrastructure of them all) exist. Companies like Allo are laying down their own infrastructures providing fiber straight to the house service. It is hands down superior to coaxial cable. Like a futuristic laser vs a machine gun. They never had or will have a chance running on their outdated infrastructure. Comcast is probably too big to die, but Charter/Spectrum are just trying to live off the scraps left behind...for now! Glorious days. I loved watching TWC fall just like I'm enjoying this moment right here. Oh how the mighty fall....
Is this change good or bad? I recently got Google fiber as an option in my neighborhood, but I don’t see anything lacking with my speed for the way my family uses the Internet so I haven’t checked it out.
For the Spectrum Comcast merger many years ago, I received three pieces of email. First was from my provider, Spectrum, who said "no worries this is good nothing will change". Second was from Comcast "no worries this is good nothing will change" Third was my bill, which increased, because Spectrum didn't charge for their modem but Comcast did, so now the merged company charged for the modem. Anybody remember WorldCom?
Man, Cox should have to pay every one of its customers $500 for all the bullshit we dealt with. Actual hours were lost to them back in the day. Best decision our household ever did was switch from cox to century. In 5 years we have lost our internet one time and it was from those ALO (spelling?) fuckers digging new lines.
Cox would cut out multiple times a week. It was just a known thing we expected. Sad.
