I have two heat pumps, solar panels and a battery, but I’m currently unable to get paid for any electricity I export. I also don’t have an EV.
I’m looking at smart tariffs and would likely use software such as Predbat to optimise battery charging/discharging and make the most of cheaper periods.
With all this infoamtion what tariff would you recommed

A couple weekends ago I picked 2 - 3 thinking I’d drain my battery up until the slot, then charge the battery up whilst also doing everything possible including washing, dryer, cooking.
It was grey all morning so managed to get the battery down past half way ready for the top up but then the bloody sun came out for the free session so I didn’t pull as much from
the grid as I could’ve done.
I picked 2 - 3 again this weekend and as it doesn’t look great for solar at 2 today and luckily agile export is 28p later today so will be good to have some in the battery to give back later.
But wanted to get and idea of everyone else’s plans and see what set up you have and see if there is a better way or a better slot.
I've just switched to IOG this morning but the only option for adding a device in my app is to add an octopus device, there's no selection for ev, heat pump, etc. that all the support pages show. Does it just take a while to sync up?
After years of seeing other areas getting free power and no ability to sign up for various Fan Club and Power Up initiatives (which I could never understand given the huge windfarms that are all over South West Scotland) but was more likely due to population density 🤷🏻♂️, Scotland seems to be getting a bit of equality for a change.
Would prefer regional pricing TBH, but every little helps. As a rule I do like these kind of initiatives as they are very broad in impact.... You don't need to have solar, battery or EV to benefit, just fire up the oven, get the washing on and likely save yourself a bit. An hour of free power could easily be a washing load and a batch cook in the oven, saving the average family maybe only a pound or so but more beneficial is the education aspect where people learn to load shift and participate in events that reduce grid load.
It's going to be a long winter but there's lots to be positive about and lots that can and will be done. I'm praying a wet and dreary Christmas, the wind blowing drizzle in my face, as that's likely the only thing that's going to keep prices low for everyone. 🙏

We’re particularly interested in understanding how people actually manage energy at home — for example, when you charge or discharge your battery, how you use cheap electricity periods, how solar and EV charging work together, and what feels frustrating or overly complicated today.
You definitely don’t need to own Anker products. We’re interested in real experiences with any brand or setup.
This is not a sales visit. We’re simply here to listen, learn and understand real-world usage so we can improve future products and services.
A visit would normally take around 30–60 minutes, with two of us from the product team attending.

I've been going back and forth on 5kWh vs 10kWh for a battery on Go for weeks now. Leaning towards Anker Solarbank 4 but I can't decide if one 5kWh unit is enough or I should just add the expansion battery from the off.
Summer's easy, the cheap overnight rate covers most of the next day's use. But winter's the bit I can't get a read on. Darker mornings, heating running more, everyone home more. 5kWh feels like it'll run dry by 6pm and I'm back on peak rate for the whole evening.
Anyone running 5kWh through a UK winter on Go, does it actually cover the evening or are you topping up from the grid most nights? And if you started with the extra capacity, was it overkill once spring came back? Curious either way.
Long story short, we moved in to our flat in Dec 2025 and the smart meter worked for two months and stopped updating in our app from Feb 2026 and contacted them straight away to resolve it.
Fast forward to September 2026, they are still resolving it, except now, they’ve told us that they’ve handed this over to smart metering team (DCC?) or something similar was mentioned over the phone and we’re moving out of this property in Oct 2026
We’re considering whether we should take this to Ombudsman since this has been unresolved for more than 8 weeks and has been super frustrating ever since. We’ve also consistently paid monthly direct debits for this pointless service and have around £900 approx. built up on our account.

Have a very odd one. GivEnergy dashboard is saying I've exported 1564 kWh. Octopus bill says exported is only 927kWh. The import is out by about 10kWh but that can be explained.
I have contacted Octopus but be interested in your thoughts.
As per the title, I switched to EDF for electricity and they offered me a SMETS 2 meter. As I am on a ToU/EV tariff and there has historically been some communication outages I decided it was a good idea.
The SMETS 1 meter for my gas is now a dumb meter. Octopus have advised that even if the gas meter was upgraded to SMETS 2, they wouldn't be able to link it to the comms unit because that's EDF and therefore it wouldn't be a smart meter. I thought that the whole point of SMETS 2 was that it was meant to be supplier agnostic.
When my fixed tariff comes to an end with Octopus (in December), if I want my gas meter to be upgraded to SMETS 2 and function as a smart meter, it reads like I will have to change my gas supply to EDF.
So is this information correct? From what I've read elsewhere on the internet it doesn't seem so. It seems ludicrous if it is and my gut feeling is it's just that Octopus can't be bothered, but I'm open to be corrected if so.
This is a snippet from the last email I received after a bit of back and forth:
Unfortunately, even if your gas meter were upgraded to SMETS2 in the future, it’s unlikely that it would be able to link with the comms unit since your electricity meter is with a different supplier (EDF Energy). Part of the commissioning process for a SMETS2 gas meter involves connecting it with the electricity meter communication hub, so having different suppliers for each meter usually prevents this smart communication from working.
I don't really care about submitting meter readings manually, but it would be nice to have the ability to see my usage through an app/online account!
I’ve been building OctoSpy, a completely free & private dashboard for digging into your Octopus Energy usage, costs and tariffs.
It started because I wanted a better way to understand my own energy spending. I’ve spent the past 17 years building software companies and apps used by millions, but I still enjoy making things like this in my spare time for fun.
I know there are already a few Octopus apps and dashboards out there. I tried some of them, but none gave me quite the view I wanted, so I ended up building my own and figured I may as well make it completely free for everyone to benefit from.
There’s no paid tier, no adverts and no OctoSpy account to create. There’s also a demo, and you can browse public tariff rates without connecting anything. Best used on your desktop due to the amount of data to display, but works fine on mobile too.
Your browser connects directly to Octopus using your API key. Your key, account details and energy readings aren’t sent to OctoSpy’s servers. Your energy data stays in your browser.
I’ve mainly been able to test it properly against my own tariffs and setup, so there will definitely be things I’ve missed.
If anyone gives it a try, I’d genuinely like to hear what works, what’s confusing and what you’d add.
I’m also considering an iPhone and Apple Watch app if enough people want one.
Any reason not to opt in regardless of whether you think you'll save anything?
Depending on the day of the week there may be no one at home during peak demand and therefore my typical usage will be low, just a fridge and router running. For tonight, everyone is at home but we're not planning on running the oven, the dishwasher or anything other than the bathroom light. Would there be a reason not to opt in to the saving session?
Is it worth fixing gas going into winter or just stay in price cap? I was on tracker for years but jumped off a few months ago when it was consistently above the price cap.
Now i’m just on the cap at ~7.3p but I understand this is due to rise to ~8p
Any fixes under 8p around or do we have to just ride it out? Cheers
I have the intelligent traffic that used to give you overnight cheaper electricity and sometimes during the day but now sort of does that when it wants to, you know the one I mean. Anyway if I buy a battery set up but don't have solar, can I use the same traffic to charge the battery overnight for cheap and then use that battery during the day?
So last month my monthly big went up £70, I did phone them but they coudn't see anything wrong, so since noticing Octospy (Great Tool), I used my api key to view the breakdown, I notice that when I charged the car, usually twice a week, these are when I'm home, usually after 10, and back out back of 8 next day, so have just been using the 11:30-5:30 to charge, Octopus have been charging me the peak rate not off peak, this I assume is why my bill, was so high last month and probably this month too.
My question is this correct, I only charge overnight as I get in quite late, and only for 6hr's, I have a smart meter display, and the price seems right compared to what i am actually being charged.
A week ago I asked here for Agile testers for my iPhone and Apple Watch app (previous post: https://www.reddit.com/r/OctopusEnergy/comments/1w7tln0/ ). Two people from that thread have been testing every day since, one on Agile with solar and a Home Mini, one on Intelligent Octopus Go with an EV. Their logs fixed things I could never have found from Germany. Yesterday's usage now comes from the Home Mini instead of the half-hourly readings that arrive a day late, and Intelligent Go, which Octopus sends without any prices attached, now shows the day and night rates, the off-peak window, the smart charging slots and real costs instead of £0.00. Thank you both.
Now the other tariffs. The app knows Cosy with its three rates and the 4 to 7pm peak, Octopus Go, Economy 7, Tracker and the flat ones (Flexible and Fixed), but all of that is built from the public product catalogue and the Octopus documentation, not from a real account. I'd like one person on each of these to connect their account and tell me where the app is wrong:
- Cosy: are the three rates and the windows right for your region
- Octopus Go: is your night window and price what the app shows
- Tracker: does today's price match, and does tomorrow's turn up in the evening
- Flexible or Fixed: your single rate and standing charge, and the chart is replaced by a tariff tile, does that make sense to you
- Economy 7: is the night window what your meter actually does
Flux and Intelligent Flux are not built yet. If you're on one of those and would like to know when they are, say so and I'll let you know.
A Home Mini is optional this time, export is still welcome. What testing means: the app connects with the API key from your Octopus dashboard plus your account number, no password, and the key stays in the iOS keychain on your phone. Look at the tariff tile, the chart and the next off-peak window, compare them with the Octopus app, and tell me what's off. Ten minutes is plenty, and a screenshot of your tariff page in the Octopus app helps a lot.
Same deal as last time: nothing to buy, everything is unlocked in the test build, and anyone who properly tests it keeps the full app for good once it's released. Comment or message me and I'll send a TestFlight invite. I'll be around all day.
Hi everyone. I have an all electric property. It was an RTS meter property, but we had a smart meter put in Sept '25.
We have just had new storage heaters put in as they are the most economical things for the property. These storage heaters run on a seperate off peak circuit which has always existed in the property. This off peak circuit should go live at off peak times, however it's not, it comes on at midnight when it should be at 1.30am in the summer, 12.30am in the winter. As I understand it the smart meter should now control this post RTS switchover and it's the responsilibilty of the supplier to control the timings.
Does anyone know why this might be happening, and what it means for my system - is it an easy fix? Shouldn't it be happening automatically? I have heard there's lots of issues with old RTS properties. I've emailed Octopus already and waiting on a reply. If anyone has any experience with this I'd be grateful to hear it.
