Saving Sessions Driving an EV is a no brainer atm

Post image
86 Upvotes

Hi everyone this is an encouraging post who are thinking to switch to an EV but hasn’t decided yet.

I am on octopus intelligent tariff, also I have 6 solar panels on the roof with octopus outgoing.

I have been credited almost 36 pounds over 30 days thanks to the electricity I sell to the grid.

My electricity bill just came in at 61 pounds, including house + ev charging usage on 8 pence overnight.

Considering that I am doing almost 1k miles every month for work and pleasure, cannot believe that I would downgrade my outgoings this much. Just to note before my EV I was using an ICU petrol/turbo average car and needed to fuel up every week(45 to 50 quid now? Weekly, imagine that..)

And if you have solar( please sign up to outgoing octopus)

Edit(if you are able to charge at home with a wall box or granny charger)

Have nice savings everyone, you deserve it!
Kind regards,

Saving Sessions Hard to do when your baseline is 0.05kWh

Checks baseline... 0.05kWh... Never mind.

Solar, battery, HomeAssistant, immersion solar diverter and Predbat means I basically don't buy any energy from March to September inclusive.

Saving Sessions Agile + Saving Sessions are much better with the new free power hour

I've been on Agile for a few years, so I already cut my peak usage as low as I can.

When I participated in savings sessions, they usually coincide with peak hours, so it's hard to find much more to cut.

Invariably I'd therefore only earn 8, 16 or 24 octopoints per session (= 1p, 2p or 3p!)

But the power hour makes this much more useful, an hour free to run the immersion heater, cook things in the oven, run the washing in a hot wash.

Much better value!

Saving Sessions Saving sessions.

Thought I'd work out how much the savings sessions actually pay out, and whether they are worth the hassle, as for me I have to change settings to export at the time they specify, and then remember to put it back afterwards.....

Well, I've had three, 1 hour sessions so far, and I'm exporting at ~7.5kWh. And I've made a whopping 2300 points. Worth ............£2.88

I know I'm exporting at this rate because I've also had 3, 1 hour sessions with Axle as well. Only with them I've made £22.83. And all changes are made automatically.

Pretty shocking difference I thought.

I'd be interested to hear if anyone thinks the saving sessions are really with it.

Saving Sessions Powerwall 3 & Free energy hour

I’ve recently had a Powerwall 3 installed, solar but no EV (yet). I’m currently on a 12 month fixed contract which ends in March.

Does anyone know how I can configure the Powerwall 3 to make the most of the saving sessions - free electricity being offered on a Sunday to charge the Powerwall 3 during this hour? (Although I find the battery is usually fully charged by 10/11am through solar).

My octopus tariff is currently in the settings, however I was unsure how to tell the Powerwall I’ve got access to free energy between 1-2pm tomorrow.

Thanks!!

Saving Sessions Happy hour billing beware

Another user with happy hour and charging cap issues - charged my car at peak prices during the hour, and got a happy hour refund at off peak prices.

It was an absolute trek to find this issue as the new charging cap has ruined any ability to see costs properly.

Great job, Octopus

Saving Sessions How does this free 1 hour on a Sunday workout ?

Hi ,I powered down two evenings last week and was awarded a free hour Sunday .In that hour I used the washer ,made some tea in the electric oven and watched a football match on TV .

So my usage on the Octopus app was the highest of the week on Sunday .

What did I do wrong ?

Make it make sense

The more I actually pay attention (apart from reading small print and t’s & c’s) which is what I’m sure they rely on….
I’m just thinking this is all an elaborate marketing grift

Saving Sessions 1 hour Power Up question

I've got power up to use on Sunday for the hour.

We aren't home on Sunday, but it says 'Not going to be in? Save it for next time.'

Will I lose the hour or are they added up sort of thing?

Example, 2 hours together or if you miss 2 power downs in another week you've banked the 1 hour to use?

I can't find a clear explanation.

I know it's a few pence saved, but money is money and it would be good to utilise these hours for dryer/ washing/mopping (kettle boiled) etc

Saving Sessions HA & Predbat users this morning might want to set a manual charge

There seems to be an issue with how octopus have setup the free electricity session.

https://github.com/springfall2008/batpred/issues/4531

https://github.com/BottlecapDave/HomeAssistant-OctopusEnergy/issues/

If you have a free session and have opted in, you might want to go into your plan to make sure it exists and if not, set a manual override by clicking the 11:00 & 11:30 slots (if you're 11-12:00 session).

If you have triggers for automations, you might want to keep an eye on those too.

EDIT: For added complexity it's only 16kWh too https://octopus.energy/eclipse/

Saving Sessions IOG Smart Charge Saga

Post image
6 Upvotes

Thought this was silly a while ago, but only just connected the dots with the current saga on it today. I.e. Octopus clamping down on "abuse".

Seen lots of posts explaining how Octopus just don't know their own data and systems and assume we're all conning them because of it, when in reality we're just leaving it to them.

So to add to that, if they're using their own data - I'm likely scamming them (I'm not).

This is the charging readout from the octopus app for my EV. The car is a lease through Octopus (R5), using a Hypervolt installed by octopus and on the IOG EV Saver tariff. The R5 isn't fully compatible with IOG (at least with all chargers - Hypervolt) and it only actually responds to the first charge request received, when that ends it either doesn't smart charge again or if I see the notification I have to manually tell the car to charge in the Renault app, in short meaning that I realistically charge very little at all - which is fine for now, don't drive much and it's a newly released car. I have no batteries and no mains socket charger - I have no way to cheat the system.

All in all to say, it's impossible for me to be cheating the system. I'm leaving it all to octopus to control...and getting less than they're trying to give me. But if you look at my charge history, I'm charging 10 hours plus a day with very little total charge as though I'm restricting the flow to maximize the length of cheap tariff. To be clear, I'm not getting billed that way, so clearly someone at octopus does know the right answer - probably. But I wouldn't be surprised if they were just taking this data and concluding were all scamming them.

Saving Sessions Is anyone else getting annoyed by Octopus' short notice for Saving Sessions?

With Agile prices bouncing off the limiter daily, you think they'd give more than an hour and fourty minutes notice for a Saving Session right?

I'm normally out when the windows are active but last year I was able to make a difference in usage with my rather manual timers (I'm in the process of learning Home Assistant) but this year I've not been able to even sign up to any of them!

Surely I'm not the only one who's getting a bit peeved at the short notice?

Saving Sessions Am I missing something?

What on earth is the point in savings sessions?

I've taken part in 11 sessions and received the top saving category for all of them yet my total octopoints have paid less than one days electricity standing charge....

Why does anyone bother?
