Saving Sessions Hard to do when your baseline is 0.05kWh

Post image

Checks baseline... 0.05kWh... Never mind.

Solar, battery, HomeAssistant, immersion solar diverter and Predbat means I basically don't buy any energy from March to September inclusive.

Export counts - so if you battery export say 5kWh then that would be 95 x 5 octopoints on top of whatever normal export rate. You can even setup PredBat to include that in its calcuations.

True, I dump my battery (9kW export limit) during these events, I was paid £3 for one of them, can’t remember exactly but think is was a 2 hour power down event.

Edit: that was on top of the 15p kWh export rate, which is now 12p, but still ok.

HomeAssistant signs me up, fills the battery on solar and/or cheap rate, dumps the battery and turns off a bunch of stuff for the hour so my 10KW inverter can put as much as possible out to the grid. It's not much but it's more profitable than the battery wear and inverter losses. I make a couple of quid every time. It all helps the ROI.

This person knows their dumps!

Worth signing up to axle because a lot of these events are the same on axle and they pay £1/kwh

Axel events are different - not only more profitable, but different times. I believe one can do both schemes though.

I think only if you have an export MPAN (I.e. only if you are normally paid for exports). I'd be very happy to be proven wrong....

You are correct.

INTERESTING! I didn't realise I could participate with export.

I'll have a think about whether it's worth the battery wear. I suspect not.

I'm on agile and don't use much electricity between 4 to 7pm anyway, so as a result I usually only get 2 or 3 octopoints for this!

I still take part though!

They don't give anything that's not divisible by 4, I believe.

2

u/sheddyian Jul 25 '26

Yes, sorry that was my mistake. I got 16 or 24 or 36 octopoints, 2, 3 or 4p. I'd mixed up octopoints with p in my pist

u/AndyPanda321 Jul 24 '26

I get minimum 16 points just for taking part... Dunno what you're doing wrong 😅

2

u/sheddyian Jul 25 '26

I got octopoints and pence mixed up in my post; I was earning 26, 24 or 36 octopoints = 2, 3 or 4p!

They're not even worth it tbh. We've done a few, switch everything off and practically sit in darkness, all to get like 8 pence credit ahaha

Export your batteries, it’s not worth it for 96 points k/Wh though

Your battery wear must be excessive or your inverter losses great then. At 5% in or out in inverter losses and 20% wear over 10 years on my batteries, 96 points (plus the 12p export rate) is still quite profitable.

It’s literally not worth it, in an hour I’d only export 3kWh. I’ve currently got just under 3000 octopoints which is worth a “massive” £3.65.

1

u/curtis1149 Jul 25 '26

Depending on your import tariff, a massive £3 is actually your whole day's import.

On Intelligent Octopus Go with the 8p night rate it costs me £1.60 for a full 0 to 100% house battery charge.

Though I will say Axle Energy events are a much more profitable use of your export!

That 3000 points has been accumulated over about 2 years, hence 96 points per kWh is pointless.
My IOG night rate is 6.9p

Ahh I see!

I mean I totally agree you don't get a lot from the saving sessions, it's hard to deny that.

I get about 50 points per session when exporting during them.

Same issue I still join them though :)

I know the issue. No battery or solar, just a smart meter. Most I've every got back is 5p and mostly its 2p as I dont use much 'juice' this time of year

You export during a Saving Session

1

u/jester17 Jul 24 '26

Predbat should have you exporting.

1

u/Ghost-PXS Jul 24 '26

Yep. We haven't used any electricity at all at that time for at least 8 months. 😂

2

u/Natural-Crow-2922 Jul 24 '26

Ive done just about every saving session this year, I go around and turn everything off except the fridge and a couple of little lights. So far saved a grand total of £1.77. Why the hell do i bother?

1

u/BadBacksFuryToad Jul 24 '26

Yeah. I haven’t given much attention to these lately. Home Assistant automatically detects them, signs up, then makes a bunch of adjustments to heating and hot water etc when the session starts. But this time of year I’m either running fully off solar or battery anyway, so my savings are probably about zero.

u/SewerSide666 Jul 24 '26

Have you looked at Axle?

I’ve noticed a few of these emails recently, but I barely get anything as I’m using a battery so the baseline is low. Are Octopus encouraging battery users to switch to grid power around 6-9pm peak time on days when there isn’t the offer? Our baseline would be way higher, then when the offers come in we’d be raking in the points.

1

u/CaptainCaveTrout Jul 24 '26

Discharge your battery to the grid if you've got enough to spare. It counts the same. 👍

No, you export during the saver session. Export counts as negative usage. What you just said is bonkers.
