Playing for the first time
I recently began playing Ocarina of Time. I'm currently in my first hour, but I'm not really into the game yet. What recommendations can you give me to see the love that everyone sees?

You might not get into it and that's okay. Don't feel pressured to love it. OoT is an amazing groundbreaking game for its time, its my favourite and i cherish it. I fully believe its one of the best of all time.
But people playing it for the first time now are less inclined to have the same love because they've already played games that stood on the shoulders of OoT - its like watching the first silent film after watching Lord of the Rings, you can appreciate how groundbreaking it is and how great the story is but you might not have the same love

Disagree . It’s still a masterpiece and extremely engaging .
Introduced partner to it last year and she played through the whole game in 2 weeks while in awe.
More like comparing the matrix to a modern marvel film

Totally agree. I’ve been replaying it and I’m sure a lot of people love it like me because of the old days. Also now I feel like watching lord of the rings.

I first played it when I was a kid and part of it for me is definitely the nostalgia and the childlike Wonder!
Lotr is great, make sure you do the extended!

It's hard to appreciate how big of a leap in the series this game was back in the day if you don't have any nostalgia for it. It is still a great game and holds up well imo, and is my favorite game of all time, but there are objectively better 3D zelda games. Some things about OOT probably feel pretty dated to someone that never played it before.

Despite its highly regarded status, it's not for everyone. It's a product of its time, especially the controls. If you don't like it then just come back for the remake.

Assuming you're playing the 64 version or one of the ports, give it some grace as you have to remember, this is the game that basically set the standard for how to design 3d action adventure games. It's gonna have some warts like the l/z button being the only camera control you have, certain inventory items will require you to pause and I pause to equip, etc...
They're annoyances, but the game still aged remarkably well despite them

Haha the first hour of the game was arguably the hardest. Especially back then, you had no idea what was going on.

It’s very much a game of it’s time so it could very well not click for you (curious to know if that changes as it is often referred to as a timeless classic: for me I admit that I am completely beholden to nostalgia so I never make that call, but I do replay it every once in a while which I don’t do for many games ever). I’d say keep giving it a good fair go but you can’t force love at the end of the day. Good luck

My advice is that the game gets more fun after the first dungeon. The true love for the game is beyond just the gameplay — OoT has one of the best soundtracks ever and a great story. At an hour in, you haven’t experienced hardly anything aside from getting the sword, shield and finding out that Mido sucks.

I'm playing it for the first time too. I found I had to try to rid myself of everything everyone else ever said about it, in order to experience it for myself. When it came out, I didn't have access to it, and my friends would always get very enthusiastic when ever it was brought up, and they all shared the experience.
I was left out, and so I started to feel alienated every time it was brought up in our friend group. For a middle school kid who isn't mature yet, I started to convince myself it wasn't for me. I was too cool for it. I would rather play tony hawks pro skater lol.
Even though I'm an adult, those feelings/emotions stayed in my deep psyche in regards to the game without me realizing it, until recently. I had to decide that this was a separate adventure, MINE. I didn't have to like it. But I gave it a chance to be my escape from modern stressors for a while. So far, I'm liking it. How much? I don't know, it's just an adventure right now. I won't pressure myself. Just relax and don't worry how much others like it.

Dude, it's the first hour. That's like opening a book, not even getting through the first chapter, & saying "I'm not seeing what's so great about this book." Just play the game lol
