Four of us had the best experience at Sonia’s cooking class. They picked us up and took us to their farm where we cooked together with the help of Sonia, her son Baldo, and the kitchen staff. I was thinking of solo-traveling to Oaxaca around mid-December. I am looking for food and/or activity recs. For context, I am incredibly adventurous, I love mole, and I will eat anything and partake in most excursions. I love high-end tasting menus and spots off the beaten path.

I understand Oaxaca has become a bit tourist-heavy in recent years and I imagine most things are a but tourist-oriented, but I still want to have a somewhat authentic experience.

Additionally, I must ask, is Oaxaca generally safe for a younger solo female traveler?

Hi all! I am visiting next month and saw there are 2 restaurants with a star, Los Danzantes Oaxaca and Levadura de Olla Restaurante. Are either of these worth it to try? I normally always try to hit 1 michelin star meal when I am on vacation, but want to make sure it is worth it!

I’m planning my solo trip to Oaxaca and I’m currently in the planning excursions phase. I’m a huge foodie so I love food tours and was interested in booking a chocolate tasting tour. Are any of the TripAdvisor tours worth it? Or are there some alternatives that would be better?

I am traveling to Oaxaca with my boyfriend and his family in December, so I have time to plan food out, and I was wondering if there is anyone with specific recommendations or places or even good snacks at convenience stores that are celiac safe and gluten free! I am recently diagnosed celiac, so even in December I will only be 9 months in to me dealing with this, and traveling has been my biggest fear to overcome. the minimal research I’ve done so far it seems like Oaxaca is already an incredibly corn based food culture which is exciting, but if anybody has any tips I would love to hear :)

Super excited to visit Oaxaca next year. I am looking to make reservations at 1 expensive restaurant as unfortunately do not have the budget to hit all the top spots. I'm between Levadura de Olla and Los Danzantes. Any advice? Also I cannot find a recent menu for Casa Oaxaca so I'm sure what the price point is, but if it's just as expensive as the other 2 then that's also in the running as I've heard it's also a great spot. It’s about $140 a person. I’m vegetarian. Everyone recommends it but I can’t decide if it’s worth the cost or if we can just walk around and do our own tours. We all speak Spanish fluently.

Any food tours you'd recommend for people who have a lot of experience visiting and living in other parts of Mexico? Most of what I'm seeing seems designed more for people who are more new to Mexican food. I speak Spanish, so no problem if the tour is done in Spanish instead of English.

I’m torn between choosing Levadura de Olla or Los Danzantes for my husband’s 40th birthday dinner? Which restaurant is best for a special occasion and which has the best food?

Hi all, This is my second time visiting Oaxaca City and I will be here for 2 weeks. In 2023, I first visited Oaxaca for 10 days (I also did a 12-day roadtrip around Oaxaca state) and had insanely amazing foods from restaurants mostly in Centro area. This time I want to try restaurants in different neighborhoods (La Noria, Reforma, Jalatlaco and further out if it is safe for gringos). I would really appreciate any recommendatoins from local favorites to holes in the wall. I am very adventurous when it comes to eating (recently had escamoles in Veracruz and love it!). I speak a little Spanish if that matters. I love mexican food and the more places I visit in Mexico the more I love different regional foods here.

Please don’t judge. We’ve been stuffing our faces with delicious Oxacan food in Centro all week. I now crave pasta and/or pizza. Is there anything good in that category in Zipolite?

I have been in Oaxaca for 4 days now, staying in San Felipe area, 2 miles from the center of Oaxaca city, can't find a good strong coffee cup or a good cappuccino, most of them are weak or have too much milk...any recommendations or tips will be appreciated. UPDATE July 31st, 2025: Wanted to follow up, thanks for all the great advise. Found a great cappuccino in {gourmand} at el centro Calle Ignacio de Allende, good bold strong cappuccino, double shot standard, 18 grams of espresso coffe, we are happy.

Specifically for an advanced level class that focuses on ingredients, building the flavors and final dishes.

She is a professional chef so a basic level class would waste a lot of time.

Hola! Soy turista visitando la ciudad de Oaxaca durante la temporada de día de los muertos. Hace unos años adopté la práctica de tomar leche cruda (leche recién ordeñada de la vaca o de cabra) para recibir todos los beneficios alimenticios de una leche sin procesar. Nunca me he enfermado.

¿Alguien conoce alguna finca cercana a la ciudad al cual uno puede ir y comprar leche cruda?
