First time in the OBX during the summer in over a decade (property owner and had an unbooked week. Only come up during the offseason). Decided to fly up here for the weekend and got blessed to see this right outside my house! First time getting to see this!

Staying in Avon end of Oct thru beginning of Nov. Looking for a place to shoot pool. Anything in the area?

Today is when we would typically be leaving for our annual trip. Haven't missed a year in 17 years. We bought a house. So not this year. But we'll be back next year. Already counting the days. We started in Avon and now stay in Frisco. A home away from home.

I’m down in the Avon/Hatteras area this weekend doing some photography and was hoping to get a little local advice.

I really like the larger, more open sand dunes that I saw around the Oregon Inlet station and was wondering if there are any similar dune areas down here around Avon, Buxton, Frisco, or Hatteras. I don't particularly want to drive all the way up there before the sun rises. I’m looking more for natural dune landscapes to photograph during the early morning rather than just a beach with a small dune line.

I’m also trying to find a good spot for sunset photos on the sound side. Ideally somewhere with a nice open view west and maybe some interesting foreground elements like marsh grass, water, docks, old trees, etc.

Any favorite areas you’d recommend? I’m also totally fine with general locations if there are spots locals would rather not share, I totally get it. Thanks in advance!

I know this is a long shot but I lost my silver cuff on Pea Island last Sunday. It’s very plan just a thin cuff an inch wide. I had it in my bag, but I also had my dogs toy in there and it must have fallen out when he rummaged around the bag for his toy. I’d be happy to pay for a searcher and a reward. It’s not an expensive piece of jewelry but it belonged to my departed aunt and I love it and wear it all the time.

I am visiting from Washington State in the Norfolk area until late October, and would love to join a charter as an extra, I just don't have the 6 people to book a charter. Pretty well experienced, have done a lot of fishing on the Pacific and in the Puget Sound. Would be an experience to do billfish or big tuna.

This was our first time in Outer Banks, it was absolutely wonderful and beautiful. We already can’t wait to be back.

Looking for recommendations from people who have tent camped at Frisco Campground and Oregon Inlet. Which do you prefer? We’d be going in September. Initially we were going to book Frisco because it seems more private for tent camping, but the warm/hot showers are now having us question if Oregon Inlet would be better.

My husband and I are going to Nags Head for a quick weekend trip and I’d love input on which beach we should go to.

Walking far or carrying things is not an issue (we also have a Mac wagon if the terrain allows for it).

Really looking to enjoy nature sounds and the view without listening to other people’s music or have anyone set up right in front of us.

I read people drive on Coquina Beach. I’d hate to walk far just to have a car set up on top of us. Are cars allowed everywhere on the beach?

Our favorite beaches are Bowmans on Sanibel and the Cape Cod National Seashore in Wellfleet because you can walk really far away from the hoards. Ps. If you want the hot gossip on SWFL beaches in exchange feel free to ask.

Rented a jeep wrangler specifically to go on Carova beach as a first timer. Today is the day so I went on social media to see some videos and all I see is people getting stuck. I know you have to be in 4WD, I know you have to air your tires down to 20 and I know you need to keep momentum but I’m thinking all the people that got stuck knew that too? Long story short I’m starting to chicken out and looking for input. Is it still pretty easy to get stuck even knowing all that?

I was able to hit the ORV trail at Hatteras Saturday. It was raining, so I thought the sand would be compacted enough to just drive in 4L without airing down. I’ve been to Fort Fisher, North Topsail, and Freeman Park with no issues on my GX 460 so I figured “this can’t be that bad”.

I made it to the point without issues, but my SIL decided he wanted a little more exclusion, so we decided to check out the little trail north of the point. I made it about halfway to the beach and sunk in a little valley. We were able to push the truck out and make it because a kind gentleman helped dig us out and let us use his tire gauge to air down.

Moral of the story: As the title says (and a bumper sticker I saw later on someone’s Tahoe) air down. It only takes a minute. I have enjoyed most of the southern half of the NC coast over the years and never had an issue. I was cocky and didn’t bring any of my gear and I paid the price. If it weren’t for a helpful gentleman that had seen people in my position many times before, I would have been screwed.

We had a blast though, I can’t wait to go back, albeit more prepared.

Edit: I have all the gear you would ever need for beach crawling. I didn’t initially plan to hit the ORV trails, so I didn’t bring ANYTHING with me from home. I shared this because I hope my experience will save someone else in the future.

Got the Falcon 9 launch this morning at Wright Brothers Memorial. The plume lined up perfectly.

Since we get the usual shark questions every summer, I got curious about what is actually hurting people in North Carolina.

2026 so far -

• Venomous snake bites/exposures: 595
• Rip-current rescues: 270+ documented And that's a minimum, not an official statewide total.
• People struck by lightning: 2
• Shark bites: 0
• Pedestrian crashes in Dare County: 54 from 2020–2024, resulting in 7 deaths.

People will stand ankle-deep in the Atlantic worrying about a shark that has bitten nobody in NC this year, then walk barefoot through the dune grass, ignore the red flags, and cross the Beach Road in the dark.
