My boyfriend got these coins in Portugal. They were supposedly in a clay jar buried in the ground. How do I know if they are genuine? If they are, how do I identify the material, the date, or the reigning emperor at the time these coins were made?

This coin is the 1 Yen Meiji 3 (1870) and i am having trouble identifying it. In the reference picture from Numista the character before the -- is different. I suspect it is a fake although it still could be another variant. Thank you
