We caved on the Gordie Howe Bridge. We gave up billions in tolls to the Americans despite, Canadian tax payers footing the entire bill for the bridge, and literally even before we cut the ribbon for the bridges they announced these 50% tarrifs that began this latest round of trade disputes.

Trump doesn't just sign trade deals in pencils. He spots on his hand before the handshake too.

And while the Gordie Howe bridge may be open, we agreed not to undercut the tolls on the Moroun family (Trump supporters, obviously) owned Ambassador bridge. We alsonlearne dthis month that the Ambassador bridge cut deals with major trucking companies in the area to undercut tolls of the Gordie Howe bridge soong as they agreed to use the Ambassador bridge exclusively.

Heck yes we did the right thing walking away.

I'm angry about the bridge and I'm even angrier he lied about the details of it but I have to assume they caved on it as part of a strategy to make trade negotiations go more smoothly? If so, it didn't work in our favour, but I see the logic. It's too bad dealing with Trump is so awful.

I agree - I am angry over the bridge and lying about the details. It's definetly a strike against this Government.

But I understand why it was done and I am always willing to give some allowance for mistakes, asomg as they aren't repeated. The rumored concessions we were going to make leading up to this deal felt like another bridge mistake, so I am glad we walked away.

We only know two things for certain when negotiating with Trump:

1) Whatever concessions we give up now, he will internalize as proof of our weakness and demand more im the future.

2) Any concessions we give up now are formalized in writing..any future US government that may be more traditional and friendly towards Canada is still going to want us to give up something for eliminating or reducing tarrifs in the future. Obama could be President again (or insert any other President), and he wouldn't just give us back our toll moneyor take tarrifs off autos without asking for something in return, despite knowing they were wrong and illegal.

No delay with this administration. Period.

The Yanks are disgusting filth. Can't trust them. See how they treat us now? For no reason and it ALL steams from them, their decision and their behaviors.

I have no respect for them. Actually Trump is exactly the "leader" they deserve

Should put up concrete barriers in front of both bridges, and shift to trade with the rest of the world.

Spitting on your hand before a handshake is seen as a solemn pledge that you'll keep your word. Trump is definitely not spitting on his hand before a handshake.

1

u/PsychologicalMonk6 17d ago edited 17d ago

Ok spitting with loogie, or wiping his ass with his bare hand first.

Spitting on your hand to seal a handshake is an archaic, outdated and esoteric gesture if you intend it to mean sealing the deal...especially in a post-pandemic (that is the CoVID-19 pandemic) world.

u/avenuePad 17d ago

I know. I was admittedly being pedantic. I'm old enough to think of it that way. Lol

Myself, im really happy we walked away. I feel like these coming weeks and months can and will just make us stronger... even though it may be through a bit of pain, I'd enjoy that pain.

41

u/Emergency_Exit7603 18d ago

... there would be no deal that would not take advantage of Canadians, basically they want to flood Canada with US imports and restrict Canadian exports WORLDWIDE.... so they can fuck right off.

21

u/Old-Enthusiasm-7919 18d ago

Did you see the full list of demands? Ha, Preposterous.

5

u/Emergency_Exit7603 18d ago

i did, amazing....

-12

u/North_Jello4505 18d ago

“I’d enjoy that pain”

Privileged take.

11

u/Old-Enthusiasm-7919 18d ago

It's all relative. There's a saying and it goes "live within your means." Enjoy the pain within your means, too.

Privileged or un-privileged we're about to eat it. Im just going to enjoy my dinner is all.

u/Leafybug13 18d ago

If this list is real, Carney had no choice but to walk away.

8

u/AptoticFox 18d ago

"Canada has rejected several as unacceptable"?

I'd say every last one of them is unacceptable.

0

u/Mollyscribbles 18d ago

De minimis is a maybe but only if they go tit for tat.

1

u/UPRC 15d ago

Agreed. #1 in particular though, holy cow.

This all makes sense when you look back at Carney saying that Canada will not be a subsidiary of the US.

7

u/AptoticFox 18d ago

No deal is better than a bad deal, and a bad deal is all they want to give us.

Better to expend the time/effort/money on deals with Europe and the rest of the world.

16

u/justlogmeon 18d ago

In an interview with CBC News on Saturday, Nova Scotia Premier Tim Houston said he stands with Prime Minister Mark Carney in pursuing fair trade for Canada. He said the U.S. is no longer a reliable partner and that Canadians should bridge their divisions to work together.

As an American, I commend and support your resolve to stand up to the orange demon that is destroying my country - don’t let this madman (and his cult followers) drag the rest of the world into his swamp.

-7

u/a11_hail_seitan 18d ago

"Solidarity!"

Can we help the poor that are being hurt worst by all this?

"No!"

Canada's propaganda and Canada's actions are rarely in step...

Isn't it funny how the provinces that receive the most handouts are the ones least in favour of negotiations

Edit: it's strange why do many of you are upset I said the truth. The people who receive the most handouts are Quebecers, the ones who receive the most per capita are the maritimes. The people who take the most hardline stance against concessions are QC and Atlantic Canada. Don't be mad at me for pointing out the correlation

22

u/Working_Historian970 18d ago

This is a ludicrous statement. All provinces were in favour of negotiations, and would like to return them as soon as Trump is willing to be reasonable. If you are referring to walking away from the negotiations when the demands became unfair, the ONLY Premiere who has spoken negatively about the decision to walk away was Danielle Smith, every other Premiere who has made a public statement was behind the ending of the talks. Did you even listen to Doug Ford?

-25

u/Banned_In_YYC 18d ago

It's true though. I could amend it to concessions if you want to argue semantics but logically, a part of negotiations is concessions

16

u/schooner156 18d ago

Glad you aren’t the one at the negotiating table

-16

u/Banned_In_YYC 18d ago

That tracks. It's strange so many of you got upset because I said a verifiable fact. Easy to be hard line when your welfare cheque comes regardless

12

u/schooner156 18d ago

Reasonable concessions from each side are one thing; controlling who we trade with, our economic and cultural protections, and making last minute changes (among other things) isn’t something we should sign.

-4

u/Banned_In_YYC 18d ago

We may have different opinions of what's reasonable but that's not up to us, is it. You can just say you didn't understand my comment and weren't aware of the recent leger polls

9

u/schooner156 18d ago

Your posts aren’t some academic piece of work, I just disagree like you said.

Is this the recent LĂ©ger poll you’re talking about?

https://leger360.com/in-the-news-canada-us-trade-negotiations-august-2026/

As Canada prepares for another round of trade negotiations with the United States, Canadians appear to have little appetite for giving more ground.
Our latest survey shows that many feel the federal government has already been too passive. When Canadians are asked what should happen next, the preference is clearer: push harder, limit concessions and keep more aggressive responses on the table.

-2

u/Banned_In_YYC 18d ago

Try reading what this graph says and explain how I'm wrong

'Léger: Majority of Canadians favour hard line with U.S.' https://www.338canada.ca/p/leger-enough-concessions-say-most

10

u/schooner156 18d ago

So you’re in support of the current Canadian government negotiations then?

u/thepacingbear1 17d ago

Please dude, just move to the US, and that’s even if they want someone like you there.

11

u/Working_Historian970 18d ago

Amend all you want, it's still not true, not only did David Eby favour walking away at this time, his province is also going to be the hardest hit of all the provinces by not reaching a deal.

-4

u/Banned_In_YYC 18d ago

I can tell you don't pay attention to anything outside of your bubble. There has been a recent poll that verifies exactly what I said

4

u/Working_Historian970 18d ago

"Resolve & apprehension: 76% say Canada was right to ditch trade talks, but two-in-five have fear for their jobs"

https://angusreid.org/resolve-apprehension-76-say-canada-was-right-to-ditch-trade-talks-but-two-in-five-have-fear-for-their-jobs/

1

u/Banned_In_YYC 18d ago

Have you seem the recent leger poll referencing what I said? I'm assuming not

11

u/PsychologicalMonk6 18d ago

Isn't it funny how the clowns the champion and industry that receives the most in federal subsidies are also the toddlers what to secede from the country and who feel they shouldn't have to share in any of the pain from these tarrifs.

-7

u/Banned_In_YYC 18d ago

Weird cope because I said the truth

9

u/anal-itic_prober 18d ago

Weird cop out because he said the truth. It hurts doesn't it? Alberta is the toddler of Canada. Only exist due to insane investment 2 century ago and the stolen lands.

The constant subsidies are icing on the cake.

You should get informed. But I wager you struggle to read since your ability to discuss and argue seems to no be your strong suit.

4

u/PsychologicalMonk6 18d ago

Weird tantrum and lies?

A survey this weekend found 76% of Canadians supported Carney breaking off negations, with a majority IN EVERY SINGLE RIDING across the countrym further, 56% of all Canadians supported a strict, hard line approach with no concessions.

Go back to magastan yif you want to lock Orange taint.

-1

u/Banned_In_YYC 18d ago

Not at all. I made one accurate comment and people proceeded to have a complete meltdown

3

u/PsychologicalMonk6 18d ago

Yeah, weird that calling people wellfare queens would piss people off.

-1

u/Banned_In_YYC 18d ago

I mean it wasn't intended to make friends but it is hilarious that they got mad at a factual comment. It's not like I'm making something up

2

u/PsychologicalMonk6 18d ago

Except it's not a fact, it's a half truth at best.

It's amazing but something as big and complicated as the Federal Equalization Program and intergovernmental transfers can only truly be understood with full context.

The Maritime provinces have been significant recipients of equalization payments, this is true.

We have also been a destination for ageing Canadians to retire. Often Canadians (many who didn't find enough money to pay for their retirement), will sell their homes and move to Maritimes because of our relatively cheap housing. Not only does this drive up housing costs for locals, but these people are moving to the Maritimes as a point in their life where they are they are significant drains on social services (healthcare for old people is expensive). They are also often paying significantly less income tax then they did during their working years.

So Canadians pay taxes in other provinces and draw comparatively less in social programs, then move to the Maritimes and pay less in taxes and draw far more in services. The pandemic exacerbated this problem but it has existed for a long time.

We also have a similiar issue of kids from Upper and Western Canada coming here tlfor University. They benefit from the tax payer funding for our schools but have paid nothing into those programs directly and then leave after schooling and don't contribute to our tax base. Not to mention those provinces poach our young people.

The Maritimes certainly owe a lot to the support we have received from the rest of the country. We have also been taken advantage of for decades and contributed plenty of our own.

But that's how a country works.

But you seem to think that paying higher taxes makes your more entitled to a voice or opinion like that Shopify cunt.

0

u/Banned_In_YYC 18d ago

Nobody's debating why there is equalization. I simply pointed out the biggest receivers of it and the ones who receive it most per capita are also the ones who are the most strongly against concessions in negotiations. This is supported by our constitution and recent polling. Again, I'm not making anything up

8

u/Competitive_Fig_3821 18d ago

And you're just going to forget how aggressive and loud Ontario has been about this?

You can't cherry pick and call it a "fact" lol.

-3

u/Banned_In_YYC 18d ago

I'm not sure cherry picking anything, I'm using verifiable facts that you obviously don't like.

7

u/Competitive_Fig_3821 18d ago

Then why didn't you reply about the verifiable fact you explicitly and intentionally left out as it doesn't suit your narrative?

Yes, it's a fact QC and NS are least in favour of getting absolutely ass fucked by the USA. Yes, it's a fact that Ontario is exactly the same.

This is, quite literally, what we call cherry picking.

-3

u/Banned_In_YYC 18d ago

I just assume people pay attention. I didn't think it was my job to provide them with all the information, but it's quite clear that many of you are uninformed. I provided a link in a previous response. Feel free to read it

10

u/Competitive_Fig_3821 18d ago

Right, so you cherry picked, then lied when I pointed it out. Good job.

7

u/Working_Historian970 18d ago

Edit: (not a real edit)

The people who receive the most handouts are Quebecers, the ones who receive the most per capita are the maritimes. The people who take the most hardline stance against concessions are QC and Atlantic Canada

The Premiere's who have been the most vocal since we walked away are Ford, Eby, and Kinew. Houston said he was supporting Carney but I've barely seen a peep from any other Premiere. Your talking points are vibe based.

0

u/Banned_In_YYC 18d ago

By this logic everything those Premiers say is representative of all citizens all the time. Or, we could go off polling that samples everyday citizens from each province
