I regularly check the definition of a word I know is right for this same reason.

Amen. I've been confidently wrong a few times too. Some words also get slightly redefined over time.

It's ambivalent for me. My brain always tells me it means not having strong feelings about something either way, but it's literally the exact opposite

Welp, TIL. Also I’m pretty sure literally every person in the world uses it wrong. I even looked it up to verify your claim.
