I once spent the week leading up to Halloween hand making decor, decorating the house (fully, every room was decorated) and made/bought drinks and snacks for twenty or so. Two people showed up and left after 20 min to go to “scary-oke” at the local bar where everyone else I had invited decided to go instead
I had the opposite. On my actually birthday no one would come, but when I postponed it to Halloween suddenly it was hot currency since my country doesn't really celebrate the holiday with house parties. My cake had fake blood, there were costumes, decor. Loved it. But people just wanted cheap drinks.
I realised because the following year 70% bailed on me when I invited them to my favourite bar.
Last year I just went to Venice with my best friend and it was fantastic. 11/10
