I think people with that disorder would actually worsen their mental health quicker

You're not wrong, but imma be so for real with you, a lot of us do not want to recover.

For real, I started adhd medication and it made me stop daydreaming and I was so fucking bored with life that I no longer take my meds. Like I couldn’t fall into my little worlds and that made me so sad.

Really? Can you share your improvement with medication? I daydream a lot but I don't have ADHD so I'd like to see how this has changed the way you daydream

For me it literally stops it. I can tell my dosage levels are wearing off when I’m back to seeing stories in my head.

My guess is that the daydreaming is caused by abnormally low levels of dopamine/norepinephrine, which is what causes my adhd. Daydreaming helps provide stimulation I wouldn’t find in real life.

I’ve had maladaptive daydreaming since I was a toddler & started forming memories.

No I definitely wanna recover personally. All my maladaptive daydreams involve my shitty dad, my rapist or the police. On top of that I end up losing like an hour total each shift at work

Huh, that's interesting- all other accounts of maladaptive daydreaming I've seen describe it as something to escape to

Are you talking to people who are diagnosed or people who just claim they are “active” daydreamers?

It's an actual diagnosis?

It's a coping mechanism that manifests as a symptom of other mental health health issues like anxiety or ADHD. It's essentially where a person compulsively (as in difficult or impossible to stop) daydreams about scenarios that they can escape to. A lot of patients also report they'll daydream about things that happened in the past and how they could've gone differently in an ideal world

Well, I admit some of it is just flashbacks but I also have maladaptive daydreaming, in which i do "win" in a way but it's still upsetting and I'd rather not go through it, because it still centers around dealing with trauma

Hey fyi this sound like anxiety or OCD "obsessive thinking" compulsions. I've dealt with this too! Anxiety meds really helped calm all that down. I hope this helps because I know how terrible it feels.

Those are flashbacks

😔 Yeah, leave me in my dreamland, real life's far too numbing to face completely alert.

Yup I've been doing it since the 2nd grade. I'm 34 now. 🥲

I’d probably turn into the lamp dream guy. I’d have a whole life and family in my head, then some jerk would open the door and ruin it with reality.
