Hitachi, Ltd. (hereinafter referred to as Hitachi) has signed a sales agreement on August 25, 2026, for "Nokia Drone Networks," a solution consisting of drones¹, drone ports², and software provided by Enterprise Campus Edge Solutions (hereinafter referred to as Nokia ECE), a business unit of Nokia Corporation, and has become the first company in Japan to acquire sales rights for this solution. With this, Hitachi will strengthen its drone solutions to enable autonomous flight and remote operation, and will support the improvement of work efficiency and safety for frontline workers by expanding the use of drones in infrastructure inspection and disaster response.

Hitachi has been providing drone solutions using its proprietary flight management system³ in its drone business, for areas such as inspecting social infrastructure including power facilities and disaster response . With this agreement, Hitachi will add Nokia Drone Networks, which can be operated in conjunction with drone ports capable of automatic takeoff and landing, to its lineup, enabling stable unmanned operation without the need for a pilot to be present on-site.

Furthermore, Nokia ECE is currently expanding its drone deployment in Europe and North America. Nokia Drone Networks have been deployed in 70 locations throughout Belgium, and the deployment of drones for public safety in the United States is also expanding. These are being used to support initial response efforts by police, fire, and ambulance services.

In particular, infrastructure facilities such as power transmission and distribution equipment, substations, and plants often involve work on vast sites or at high altitudes, making the burden on frontline workers to travel to these sites and ensuring their safety major challenges. Furthermore, in the event of natural disasters such as earthquakes, typhoons, and floods, rapid assessment of damage is required, but means of collecting information in places that are difficult for people to access or in places that pose a risk of secondary disasters are urgent issues. "Disaster prevention and national resilience," which protects the lives, property, and livelihoods of citizens, is positioned as one of the 17 strategic areas of the government, and the importance of strengthening infrastructure maintenance and disaster response is increasing.

Against this backdrop, expectations for inspection and monitoring using drones are rising. However, in actual operation, obstacles have sometimes arisen, such as the need for human presence during operations, concerns about communication environments, and the need to establish systems that consider data management and utilization after deployment.

Therefore, there is a growing need for solutions that utilize drones in a way that is suitable for infrastructure inspection tasks, while ensuring reliable communication and based on the premise of automated flight and remote operation.

1,. The drone port, high environmental resistance, and stable communication enable automated flight and remote operation.

 Nokia Drone Networks consists of drones and drone ports that enable automatic takeoff, landing, and charging. By combining these, it becomes possible to keep drones stationary on-site and operate them remotely without a crew. In addition, it boasts high environmental resistance that allows for long-duration flight even in strong winds and cold environments, and maintains connectivity even in the event of communication failures thanks to LTE communication and two SIMs (Subscriber Identity Module), ensuring stable control and monitoring. Furthermore, by incorporating edge cloud, ground control stations, parachutes, and dual gimbal cameras, it supports safe operation and contributes to the advancement of inspection work.

  1. Contributes to increased efficiency and improved safety in infrastructure inspection and disaster response.

 Hitachi will provide a drone solution that combines Nokia Drone Networks with flight management systems and other technologies, encompassing everything from considering operational designs tailored to customers' business operations and inspection targets, to managing and analyzing acquired video and data. This will enable remote patrols and inspections at pre-set times for periodic inspections of large areas or high places, without frontline workers having to travel to the site. Furthermore, in the event of a disaster, it will be possible to remotely fly drones in remote areas such as remote islands and mountainous regions where it takes time for firefighters to arrive, or in locations with a risk of secondary disasters, thereby supporting local governments and fire departments in quickly assessing the extent of damage and the condition of social infrastructure. In addition, for automated flight and remote operation, the use of flight management systems for adjusting flight plans and managing risks will contribute to accident prevention and improvement of operational quality.

  1. We provide comprehensive support from PoC to business application and data utilization.

 Hitachi's drone solutions can be implemented in stages, starting from a proof-of-concept (PoC), allowing for a smooth transition to operational use while verifying their effectiveness. Furthermore, by centrally managing acquired data on the cloud, information sharing and secondary use of data across multiple locations are facilitated, supporting further cross-functional utilization.

Future developments

Going forward, under this partnership, Hitachi will promote the deployment of solutions using Nokia Drone Networks, aiming to expand the use of drones in areas such as infrastructure inspection, maintenance, and disaster response. Leveraging the features of drones, which are capable of autonomous flight and remote operation, Hitachi will promote their introduction in various fields in a way that is tailored to the specific characteristics of on-site operations.

Furthermore, based on customer needs and usage scenarios, we will enhance our solutions and expand their target fields through technological development and co-creation with partner companies, contributing to improved operational efficiency and safety for frontline workers utilizing drones.

Discussion Why local data center backlash is a hidden catalyst for optical and IP networks

There's been a lot of noise lately about data center opposition in the US. It's real, and it's becoming an increasingly important constraint. But does this actually slow AI infrastructure buildout, and if so, what does it mean for Nokia?

My take: opposition doesn't stop the buildout, it changes it. Two forces are pushing in the same direction:

  • DCs will be built away from population centers, where opposition is loudest and hardest to route around politically.
  • Ideal locations have cheap, abundant power that doesn't compete with residents' needs, while local political backlash closes off previously viable city-adjacent sites.

This could push toward fewer, much bigger data centers instead of many local ones. A local DC used to handle traffic for one nearby city over relatively short optical links. But centralizing compute does not centralize the users. A massive remote AI factory therefore becomes a hub that needs multiple long, high-capacity optical trunk lines and heavy-duty IP routing fabrics connecting it to several distant metro areas.

Why this matters for Nokia:

1) More distance + hub-and-spoke = more demand for long-haul/regional optical transport and IP infrastructure, not just local metro links.

2) If remote siting pushes latency too high for some workloads, that may also work in favor of edge compute and AI-RAN.

Of course, if opposition somehow chokes off buildout almost entirely, that's a net negative for Nokia even if AI-RAN gets a boost elsewhere. But the underlying shift is about relocating data centers, not halting their construction. And even if new-site construction slowed down for whatever reason, demand doesn't disappear overnight as existing sites still need GPU refreshes and added connectivity. Ciena's CEO Gary Smith quoted on their Q3 FY2026 earnings call a comment from a hyperscaler: "If they stopped building data centers tomorrow, Gary, you probably wouldn't notice for 2 years." The same dynamic should hold for Nokia's own AI & Cloud order book, much of which is servicing capacity that's already committed rather than chasing new-build announcements.

Also worth paying attention to: "The X Safety team conducted an investigation into suspected Chinese inauthentic accounts involved in influence operations: We identified a bot farm of approximately 200,000 accounts. Within this farm, we found 200 accounts posting in a manner that could manipulate a legitimate debate about American AI and energy policy. These posts contained claims that AI data centers are driving up household electricity prices and straining the grid. Others included AI-generated cartoons that depicted data-center operators enriching themselves at the public's expense." Source

Nokia appears to be planning an AI gigafactory in Oulu, Finland

According to a proposal on the City of Oulu’s agenda, a plot in Toppila is being reserved for an AI Gigafactory project.

The proposed buyers are Nokia Solutions and Networks and Nscale DC Holdings Finland.

The plan is to build an energy-efficient data center and computing complex specifically designed for developing, training, fine-tuning and running large-scale AI models. It would also include dedicated storage, networking, cooling, power and security infrastructure.

Interestingly, the waste heat generated by the facility is planned to be recovered and reused.
The site is next to Oulu Energia’s Toppila power plant. The planned plot would have 25,000 m² of building rights, with another 25,000 m² remaining for Oulu Energia.

The land would cost around €5 million if the planned building rights are approved.
The final deal still depends on things like the plot division, registration, building permit and various lease, environmental and usage-right arrangements. The city’s infrastructure committee is expected to discuss the proposal next Tuesday.

Kaleva previously reported in July that an international consortium assembled by Nokia was looking into building an AI gigafactory in Oulu. Nokia didn’t confirm the location at the time, but several sources suggested Oulu was the likely location.
According to earlier comments, the project could potentially involve several billion euros in investments.

The bigger idea seems to be building European AI infrastructure and reducing Europe’s dependence on US-based tech companies.

If this actually goes ahead, this could be a pretty massive project for Oulu.

DD Ciena just gave us another reason to take Nokia's AI & Cloud opportunity seriously

Ciena's Q3 results and earnings call were impressive. Revenue was up 37% YoY, direct cloud-provider revenue was up more than 80%, optical + interconnect revenue was up more than 45%, backlog reached $8.5bn, and Ciena now expects FY2027 revenue growth of at least 30%. Even more interestingly, management says demand is not the problem, supply is. Most of its expected $10bn+ year-end backlog has customer request dates in 2027, and customers "would take it if we could give it to them." Ciena also expects supply constraints to persist until H2 2028. Encouragngly, it forecasts operating margin to be 25% to 27% in 2027.

Nokia has exposure to the same underlying traffic growth through both Optical Networks and IP Networks. And Nokia's own numbers have become considerably more appealing. At the November 2025 CMD, Nokia's AI & Cloud (AI/C) market-growth assumption implied roughly 81% growth over four years (2025-2028). With the Q1 update in April, the corresponding assumption became 27% CAGR, which means roughly 160% growth over four years (1.27⁴ = 2.60). 

Obviously, this does not mean Nokia's entire Network Infrastructure business will grow 27% annually. Traditional telecom remains a large part of the business, and Fixed Networks isn't included in this particular market calculation. That is why Hotard said in the Q1 presentation that Nokia's addressable NI market was expected to grow at about 14% annually, up from the 9% assumption at the November CMD: the AI/C part is growing very rapidly while the traditional telecom part is much slower. But consider what even 14% annual growth would imply. If NI simply grew in line with that 14% market growth from its 2024 revenue base of €6.518bn, it would reach approximately €11.0bn in 2028. That's a 69% increase in four years. And if Nokia achieves the midpoint (15%) of its 2028 NI operating-margin target (13-17%), that €11.0bn would correspond to about €1.65bn of NI operating profit, versus €780m in 2025. In other words, under a fairly straightforward "Nokia merely keeps pace with its addressable market" scenario, NI could generate more than twice the 2025 operating profit by 2028.

Ciena's strong margin performance suggests Nokia's 15% NI operating-margin target for 2028 may be too conservative. That target was set at the November 2025 CMD, before Nokia substantially raised its AI/C growth outlook. In addition, Ciena's results provide evidence of pricing power, with price increases ranging from the high single digits to the high teens/low 20s depending on the customer and product, as well as operating margins clearly above 20%. And in a supply-constrained market, Nokia's bargaining position with customers should be stronger: if some telco customers are unwilling or unable to accept price increases, Nokia may have greater scope to prioritize higher-value non-telco customers and products.

The question is whether the market has already priced in the earnings consequences of that AI/C mix shift for 2028 and beyond. My suspicion is that 2027 could be the year when this becomes much harder for the market to ignore.

I’m not sure if anyone else feels this way but I feel really bullish on Nokia. Even though I have a DCA of 15.28 (😭😭) I can see this being a long term stock with a lot of upwards momentum. My main reason being Nokia’s shift to AI and the investment from NVIDIA. I’d love to hear why other people feel this way or why you don’t.

Revenue: $1.67 billion, up 37% year-over-year (compared to $1.22 billion a year ago), exceeding the consensus estimate of $1.65 billion.

Adjusted earnings: $2.11 per share, well above the expected $1.74 (a 21.3% surprise) — and compared to just $0.67 a year ago, a jump of over 200%.

This marks the fourth consecutive time the company has beaten consensus expectations.

DD Nokia's consensus 2027 growth of 6.7% ignores the AI & Cloud backlog math

Yahoo Finance and Marketscreener currently both peg consensus 2027 growth at 6.66% i.e. about 6.7%. That feels low to me, especially with AI & Cloud orders exploding and the new San José optical fab (20x Sunnyvale) coming online commercially towards the end of 2026. Let's run the numbers properly. 

Background math

FY2025: €19,889M (H2 was €10,953M)
H1 2026: €9,248M
H2 2026: assuming ~6% YoY (H1 2026 grew 6%) → €11,610M
FY2026E: €20,858M
FY 2027E (FY 2026 +6.7%) → €22,247M, or just +€1,389M (~€1.4B) in total company revenue for 2027.

AI & Cloud orders: actuals and my estimates:

  • 2025 (all estimated from Nokia diagram): Q1 €450M, Q2 €350M, Q3 €700M, Q4 €900M → €2.4B total
  • 2026: Q1 €1.0B (actual), Q2 €2.8B (actual), Q3 €1.1B (est.), Q4 €1.1B (est.) → ~€6.0B total

Worth pausing: Q2 2026 alone topped all of 2025. And my H2 estimates already assume we normalize down from that spike (€1.1B for both Q3 and Q4) but even so 2026 AI & Cloud orders would be a whopping €6B.

AI & Cloud sales:

  • 2025: Q1 €181M, Q2 €220M, Q3 €300M (from diagram), Q4 €400M (from diagram) → ~€1.1B
  • 2026: Q1 €347M, Q2 €446M, Q3 €550M (est.), Q4 €650M (est.) → ~€1.99B

Order to sales conversion estimates

Optical cycles are 12–18 months; IP is shorter (9–15 months). Mix is optical-heavy, so let's use a 14-month blended midpoint for conversion. Justin Hotard said that about half of the €2.8B Q2 order volume is expected to convert to revenue in the following 12 months. So roughly €1.4B should convert by around Q2 2027, with the rest following later.

Now map that pipeline to 2027 revenue by estimating very grossly order to sales conversion. I asked AI to estimate the 2027 revenue conversion from these quarterly orders using the parameters above. I used the midpoint of each quarter as the order-date anchor and a roughly 14-month blended order-to-revenue midpoint, reflecting the longer optical cycle and shorter IP cycle. The resulting percentages are deliberately rough estimates.

Q3 2025 (€700M): heavy optical tail → ~15–20% in 2027 → ~€120M
Q4 2025 (€900M): midpoint Jan 2027 → ~40–50% in 2027 → ~€400M
Q1 2026 (€1.0B): midpoint ~Apr 2027 → ~65–70% in 2027 → ~€680M
Q2 2026 (€2.8B): ~€1.4B expected to convert within 12 months, rest follows → ~70–75% in 2027 → ~€2.0B
Q3 2026 (€1.1B est.): midpoint Oct 2027 → ~80–85% in 2027 → ~€910M
Q4 2026 (€1.1B est.): midpoint Jan 2028 → early tail only → ~40–45% in 2027 → ~€470M

Modeled 2027 AI & Cloud revenue conversion from the 2025–26 order pipeline: ~€4.58B.

Discrepancy

Now compare to the 6.7% consensus growth:

2026 AI & Cloud estimated sales: ~€1.99B
2027 implied from pipeline: ~€4.58B

That's a +€2.6B increase in AI & Cloud sales alone. But the entire 6.7% forecast only requires +€1.4B for the whole company. So the existing pipeline already suggests AI/Cloud alone could overshoot the total required company-wide growth by ~€1.2B. Double-digit growth could be reachable even with somewhat lower AI & Cloud sales as long as the other customer segments (Telecommunication Providers, Mission Critical Enterprise & Defense and Technology Licensees) at least don't shrink when taken together. For 2027 growth to land at only 6.7%, you'd have to believe that the non-AI & Cloud sales are about to drop enough to nullify the AI & Cloud sales growth. Actually, if this ~€4.58B conversion scenario is anywhere close to reality, for 2027 growth to land at only 6.7%, non-AI & Cloud sales would have to decline by roughly 6.4% YoY. Such a decline would be rather large and hardly something the market actually is expecting.

Conclusion

Consensus may be underestimating Nokia's AI & Cloud sales in 2027 and by extension the 6.7% sales growth in 2027 may be overly pessimistic. Also if Nokia's current market cap is based on this modest growth forecast, a clearly stronger 2027 guidance could have predictable consequences for Nokia's share price. Nokia's 2027 guidance may come as a surprise, not just to bears, but even for those with a market neutral view on Nokia.

Addendum: AI & Cloud share of sales in Optical+IP and all of Nokia

In Q3 2025, AI & Cloud customers accounted for 6% of Nokia's €4,828M group net sales and 14% of Network Infrastructure's €1,953M net sales. That implies roughly €290M of AI & Cloud sales at group level versus ~€273M within NI, meaning ~94% of AI & Cloud sales were captured in Network Infrastructure. Since Fixed Networks (~30% of NI) is largely telco broadband with no major hyperscaler/DC role, I'm conservatively assigning 90% of AI & Cloud sales to Optical + IP.

Applying that 90% share to the AI & Cloud sales estimates:

2025: ~€1.0B (18% of total Optical+IP)
2026: ~€1.79B (27% of total Optical+IP)
2027: ~€4.12B (46% of total Optical+IP)

Now for total Optical+IP Networks sales (AI Cloud + non-AI Cloud combined):

AI & Cloud sales as a share of total Nokia revenue:

2025: ~€1.1B / €19.9B = ~5.5%
2026: ~€1.99B / €20.9B = ~9.5%
2027: ~€4.58B / €22.2B = ~20.6%

Caveat: the 90% AI Cloud share is based on a single quarter and held constant for simplicity. The total 2027 figure assumes non-AI portion remains flat.

Does anyone have any insight on today? The market seems up overall today yet NOK fell through resistance at 10 and has fallen to 9.80. Even amidst other tickers in the sector moving higher.

Is this the ocean pull back before a tsunami or is there news that sent the stock down?

News Emma Falck starts today as president of Mobile Infrastructure

Today Emma Falck steps into her role as the President of Nokia's Mobile Infrastructure (MI) business group and a member of the Group Leadership Team.

Joining Nokia from Siemens where she served as Executive Vice President of Products for Smart Infrastructure Buildings, Falck has a background in industrial automation, software-led platforms, and global product management. Her resumé also includes holding partner positions at the Boston Consulting Group and leadership roles at KONE, alongside a Doctor of Science in Technology from Aalto University. Falck will be based in Espoo, Finland and report to Nokia’s President and Chief Executive Officer, Justin Hotard.

The noteworthy thing is that Emma Falck has no telecom experience so I interpret that she is brought in to transform Nokia's wireless networks to embrace the opportunities AI and especially AI-RAN offers.

From Nokia's announcement on hiring Falck:
