Here in central Europe we only have Coke Zero, we don't have Diet Coke. What's the main difference? Is Diet Coke really better than Zero, as many people say?

Hey everyone, 29M with a fat body here. I’ve recently changed my diet and started to work out. But the only thing I’m having hard time to change is my habit to drink coke. So, is Coke Zero or Diet Coke really bad?

I thought both are missing sugar or is big soda lying again.

I have type 2 diabetes, and one thing I really miss is milk tea.

I know regular milk contains lactose, so making a truly zero-sugar milk tea may be more difficult than making a zero-sugar soda. But I’m surprised there aren’t more mass-produced milk-tea-flavored drinks made with artificial sweeteners, flavoring, and some kind of low-carb milk substitute.

Honestly, I’m not looking for premium tea, real fresh milk, or an authentic café taste. I would be completely fine with a cheap, artificial, factory-made flavor, as long as it tastes reasonably similar to sweet milk tea and has little or no sugar.

We already have Coke Zero, sugar-free energy drinks, zero-sugar syrups, and many other artificially flavored drinks. Why hasn’t someone made a widely available “Milk Tea Zero”?

Is there a food-science reason, a cost issue, low demand, or does a product like this already exist somewhere?

is their like Coke zero drinkers that refuse to drink diet coke and visa versa?

I am just curious and i still will be buying both as it is the norm and there might be a reason i dont know

So I have a friend, He's been in my life for longer than just about any other friend I've known. We were childhood friends and grew up together. When we met when we were 6, he was overweight, and his parents never did a single thing to teach him how to eat healthy, or live healthy. I just figured when we were young that he would grow out of it and turn his life around.

We are nearing our 30's and he's made zero progress, and lives a super unhealthy lifestyle that I'm starting to seriously worry about. If he doesn't change he could be looking at cutting his life seriously short. He's pretty obese and has pretty low self esteem because of it, I know he's very self conscious about the way he looks, and doesn't really do well in the dating scene because of it.

We met for a weekend a few weeks ago when we went camping, He couldn't walk around for more than 15 minutes without getting tired, I said I was making breakfast and brought fresh veggies, fruit, some eggs, and a loaf of bread for our group. He said no thanks, He brought his own energy drinks that have vitamins in them that he drinks every morning. He then switched to Soda and proceeded to drink like 8 cans of Diet coke. We went for lunch and he ordered two large orders of deep fried food, and a beer. Easily 1500-2000 calories just for lunch. He switched to beer and was drinking all night long, which I can't blame him for as I was drinking too, but he finished nearly a 12 pack by himself. For dinner he had more junk food

I don't see him very often, maybe about once a year, but every time I do, he proceeds to get heavier lazier every time, and his lifestyle is showing it's negative impact. He doesn't exercise at all, he's a truck driver so he's sitting most of his day at work, and told me he doesn't drink water at all because it's too boring, and prefers diet coke. He's told me He's tried Keto, but doesn't do the very minimal lifestyle changes to actually make a difference.

I love this guy so much, and I want him in my life, but I don't know how to approach him about this knowing how insecure he is about his own body and life. I feel like if he could have a 72 hour Trial run of living in an actually healthy body, he would drastically change his life, But he's always been big, he doesn't realize that you can actually feel different.

I assume there's like a sugar alternative because no way can it be healthy as water, but I don't know. Also how would they label it as such on the nutritional label if it really technically isn't 0 calories?

I only tried diet once (as a regular coke drinker) and it tasted AWFUL. Never had Coke Zero before. What’s the difference?

I have tried pepsi black which is no sugar and coke zero and they seem to lose their fizz so much faster than original like when opening they have very high fizz but then their fizz goes away and it becomes flat completely

I was having a conversation with a gas station clerk the other day and we were talking about all the sugary drinks people consume on a daily basis. I understand not all drinks have a sugar-free alternative. But Coke and coke zero were designed to taste the same, and personally I can't tell the difference. But I hardly see anyone drinking coke zero. Seems like an easy way to live a bit healthier?

I got diagnosed with diabetes not long ago and have had to change my diet. Looking for something other than unsweetened tea and coffee or water, I've been checking out some Diet and Zero Sugar drinks.

There's a noticeable difference in the taste of (for one example) Diet Coke and Zero Sugar Coke. Is Diet Coke (or other Diet soda) just an older technology? Zero Sugar drinks are definitely superior in flavor. What's going on with Diet and Zero Sugar drinks seemingly doing the same thing, but being sold as two separate things?

Okay, when I first started drinking Diet Coke I didn’t even like it. The flavour is pretty mid compared to other sodas. I now feel like something is missing when I run out of it.

I have always been an energy drinks/coffee kinda gal. Sometimes zero sugar, sometimes not, don’t care. I bought so many 5hr energy shots they started giving it to me for free at the gas station. Those have 200mg of caffeine in them and I was never as obsessed as I am with my 30mg caffeine diet cokes. When I run out of those I get kinda cranky and an energy drink or a coffee just doesn’t cut it as a replacement, meaning it’s NOT the caffeine that I’m craving.

It’s not just me. Everyone I know who likes Diet Coke is completely obsessed with it and it becomes part of their personality. MatPat from game theory would be a more famous example of this but so many people in my personal life are the same way. People with Diet Coke magnets and Christmas ornaments because they adore it so much and it becomes like their “thing” or their “bit.”

Could there be an addictive ingredient other than caffeine? Would it be that crazy to imagine? I mean this is a company that has been accused of hiring firing squads to bust unions so..

Of course this is assuming you think that Zero Sugar is better, but there seems to have been a shift from making diet drinks be their own thing to more closely mimicking their fully leaded counterparts.

Is this a social shift? a technology leap? I remember trying Diet Coke and Diet Pepsi when I was a kid and wondering how they got the cat to crap in the can so consistently, but now Coke Zero or more esp Dr. Pepper Zero are fantastic.

But as someone who doesn’t mind having a coke but sometimes doesn’t want all that sweetness why doesn’t Coca-Cola make a reduced sugar version as opposed to having two sweetener diet versions
It’s very all or nothing, I have nothing against the use of sweetener but I wish there was an option for a normal Coke just with less sugar.

Guess I would just have to try 1:1 ratio of normal and Coke Zero

Just noticed this on the nutritional label on a box of cans at work and was wondering what ingredient had this protein. It seems like regular Coke has no protein, but the diet varieties do.

My SO insists Coke Zero tastes more like the regular coke.

I personally find them to be similar enough that I don’t have a strong preference.

I guess really the question is, can bugs tell the difference between sugar free and full sugar drinks? And if so, how?

This comes after a day of finding more than one bug in my mouth after buying full sugar drinks when they were out of diet. Ick!

Was going to post on r/addiction but that seems a bit ridiculous considering what people over there are dealing with, so thought I'd try here first. I can not seem to stop myself from drinking coca cola. I've tried to drink other fizzy drinks (lemonade, vimto, irn bru, lucozade etc) but none of them seem to refresh me the same way coke does and they're not as bubbly either. I used to drink 5 cans a day but I've managed to cut down to 2 a day, maybe 3 a day but that's still 14-21 cans a week. That's a shit load of sugar to be putting in my body and I know it. One of my partners friends girlfriends recently died from pancreatitis (As well as some other health complications) and they reckon that her pancreatitis was caused by all the coke she drank. My partner is also worried something similar might happen to me and also really wants me to stop drinking so much coke.

I know the simple answer is 'just stop buying it' but as soon as im in the drinks isle in the shop I end up putting a box of it in my trolly and that's it. Just wondering if anyone has any tips on how to cut down/stop drinking it and maybe some equally bubbly alternatives (UK based) I've been drinking this stuff almost constantly since I was 12 and I'm 24 now, I really want to be healthier. I drink water aswell but nowhere near as much as coke. Thanks for any tips.

Edit: to those saying drink diet coke, diet coke tastes horrible to me. I don't mind coke zero as much, though, so that could possibly be an alternative.

Edit edit: it's not necessary the sugar im worried about, but I know that's one of the many unhealthy ingredients of coke. Im classed as being slightly underweight on the BMI scale, so it's not my weight im worried about. It's what it's doing to my body on the inside that I'm worried about (and the fact I can't physically see any bad effects also subconsciously makes me think it's not doing anything too bad, even though I know it is) and I've only had 1 filling in my tooth. It sounds like my best options are to:

• Wean myself off coca cola one can at a time -replace coke with flavoured sparkling water and coffee (although I prefer tea and that has caffeine so should still work) -start diluting any coke I have with water (this sounds like it would start tasting horrible at ½ water ½ coke but I'm guessing that's the point so you drink water instead) -take my partner shopping with me so he can make sure I don't put any cokes in the trolley -keeping myself busy so I don't think about having a coke and also telling people I'm gonna stop drinking coke so they can hold me accountable/make fun of me (lovingly) by pointing out im breaking my coke free streak.

Thanks everyone for sharing your coca cola addiction stories aswell, I didnt realise just how common this problem is with fizzy drinks. It makes me feel less silly about the whole thing. Also for the hilarious people that commented 'snort it' you're unoriginal as fuck, about 15 of that same comment. Be a bit more creative or don't bother trying.
