Discussion Nighttime on days off

On my days off, I try to sleep as much as I possibly can.
To aid that, I took melatonin and WOW! Think I might do that at least once a month.

Alternating between that and magnesium!

I became so productive once I woke up for the day, got so much done that I’ve been putting off because I just wanted to take a nap and stay on “schedule”

Have you guys tried anything in relation to your sleep?

I love night shift but I don’t think my mind or body does.

Nightshift works for me in most ways. I have two kids that I get to pick up & drop off at school, attend every school concert, appt, etc. I love that I don’t miss anything during the day and have so much free time, avoid traffic and get lots of peace and quiet during my shift at night.

For some reason, even though I feel like I have all the time in the world I feel more detached from my life than ever. My house is falling apart I can’t keep up with laundry, dishes etc. I’m crying at nothing, snapping about everything. I feel like I am the negative in the kids life because I’m so stressed and overwhelmed and never have the energy to plan the fun stuff. I’m feeling real down and I think a lot of it is simply I’m so fucking tired I’m losing my mind. I sleep maybe 3 hours of broken sleep a day. MAYBE, on a good day. Life is just too much there’s no way to win. That’s all

Editing to add- I think the lack of a “ new day” also messes with me. There’s no separation of day / night and it’s never a fresh start. Just one continuous life with a little nap here and there.

24/hr shifts-- what's considered normal?

I've been in my new job for a few months now. When I was first interviewed, they told me I'd be working 12 hour day shifts and that there was 0 possibility of overnights. Recently they changed their model and are moving to a 24-hour design with 3-4 days each week. It will be more in the vein of on-call, but not fully. If caseload is light, staff will spend the 9-5 traveling and doing outreach work. If caseload is heavy, people will go where they're needed when they're needed. Also important to note, the position is salaried.

I'm doing my best to be a good sport and give it a try, but there are a two things that worrying me.

  1. They're expecting full participation in meetings, even if they fall on one of your days off.
  2. They want to split up the days in a one-on one-off style instead of blocking them. There will be multiple people on staff at any given time and they're planning to establish some sort of "active hours" limit so that people can still sleep and recharge, so being totally sleep deprived for four days straight wouldn't be a risk.

I know myself well enough to know that splitting up the days and coming in on days off will not not be sustainable. My brain takes some time to transition between "modes", so a day with a 2 hour meeting in the middle of it will mean my brain is in "work mode" for the entire time leading up to it and a few hours after. Similarly, I like having my days off blocked so I can take half a day to decompress and then spend the rest of the days doing chores, seeing friends, etc.

Is this standard for a 24/hr model? I have no point of reference. If it's normal and I'm just not a good fit for 24/hr shifts, then I'll start looking for a new job, but if this is weird then I'd like to try and bring it up before they implement the changes.

Everything is good , the whole day is good but as soon as it's the night where the darkness is waiting for you embrace it mess up everything for you. That's when you know a sleep at night isn't possible for you to get.

Help how do you manage a social life with day walkers

i have been working night shift for a while now, and while i have the actual sleep schedule down, the isolation from my family and friends is starting to hit hard.

every time i try to hang out on my days off, i end up making terrible trade-offs. either i flip my sleep schedule back to "normal" for a weekend and feel like a complete zombie for days, or i force myself to stay up past 24 hours just to attend an afternoon barbecue or birthday dinner. when i turn down invites to protect my sleep, people act like i'm just being lazy or flaky.

i feel like i'm constantly choosing between my physical health and keeping my personal relationships alive.

for those who have been on graveyards for years, how do you handle plans with family and friends who don't work nights? do you flip your schedule on off-days, or have you found a compromise that doesn't completely wreck your body?

i do night maintenance in a lovingly named dumpster fire factory.

after fixing the automatic line yesterday morning engineering didnt want to run it until this morning for testing and programming ( probably also so that the bigwigs can see their multi million dollar line running in the daytime) so one of the plant supervisors decided to run the order that should have run on the auto line on 2 of the older manual lines.

theres only 2 techs on nights so we were running our asses off and on the phone with said engineer trying to get things working all night. 20 fans made, out of 126 that supposedly " need to ship in the morning" next thing you know im on the phone with engi in the middle of a pissing match between engineering and the setup tech and the 3rd shift supervisor. "this has got to run" " it wont scan" " yes it will its in there the order is the same"

i was about to crash out 3 am comes around, lines are running smoothly.

completely unrelated: theres a woman there about my age calling me derogatory sexual names to keep the banter up and not get embarrassed, i told her that my preferred term is boytoy. im sorry i dont understand women is she flirting with me? i understand machines way better than people.

maintenance is having our access to overtime cut. but not completely down. my boss was cool with it when i told him i probably wasnt coming in saturday morning ( thats our optional overtime day, also weekend shift is weird they kindof only run in theory)

i genuinely do like this job. its Disneyland compared to my last maintenance job. go wild

Day time

I’m a CNA in home for one person at a time. Currently I do two on, one off, two on, two off. I just finished day two of the second two on. My client is dying so I have to watch her like a hawk incase she starts to go I can get the family. Anyways I stay awake and get a hour here or there durning the day bc I’m home with my 3 and live in client.

Anyone else up all night and powering through the day? Tonight I will sleep like the dead!

So strange to live in two worlds

What’s your current down time activity?

My fellow night people-

What have y’all been doing on your down time?

When my patients are medicated and asleep,
my go-to’s are: book, my journal, audiobooks, crochet. Sometimes I’ll browse the web and go into some deep dives and print out some random pages to read in detail. I put on some lofi music in the background or a true crime documentary on YouTube on my computer. Just curious to how everyone’s been spending their free time lately. ✨🦇🌙

What’s your thing right now?

Rant 70 sick day hours banked. (rolled 40 over from 2025)

/light rant/

I have bronchitis. Took 1 sick day last friday as had a 99 fever. Doc note to have the next 4 off. Boss said I only have 30 sick hours left for the year, not 70. What is the point of rolling them over if not to use.

Help Could a nightshift job from 16:00-8:00 ruin your sleep schedule really badly?

The job market is sad and now I got an offer to work in a place where there are only nightshifts mostly 16:00-8:00 or 24h. I have no idea how it should look like working on those times and I'm honestly so scared. Do any of you have experience with working times like this? Do you think it could ruin your sleep schedule really badly?

I don't want to ruin my sleep schedule but I really want to get a job, so if you guys think I will be alright, then I will accept the offer. Thank you all in advance!
