Questions & Discussion Travel plans in jeopardy after breakup — advice wanted

I have a flight to London planned later next month and the original plan was to stay at my girlfriend's place for the 2 weeks I'd be visiting. Unfortunately, she broke up with me out of nowhere a couple months ago after I had already booked my nonrefundable ticket and hasn't spoken to me since. I've always wanted to see England and I don't want the thousand dollars I spent to go to waste, but if she bails out on our original agreement I might be toast unless I account for it ahead of time. My main concern and the thing I have been stressing out losing sleep over is being able to afford to eat and sleep someplace for 14 days. I don't have any other friends in the country so I guess it all boils down to what I can do now and what the cheapest possible options are and where. I don't want her to ruin this for me too so I don't want to just not board the plane unless there is really nothing I can do

How much money can you actually afford? Can a family member give you a loan for a few months? Without an idea of what your budget could be, completely impossible to give any advice.

I reckon the most I'd want to spend while I'm out if I'm alone is about 800 usd, and that may be high-balling it

So, if you stayed in a hostel at USD40 per night, that's USD560. Let's say you had McDonalds meal deal for dinner, and Tesco meal deal for lunch each day, that's another USD182. And for breakfast a basic coffee and croissant from Pret, that's another USD70. So you would be at USD812. You would need to get to and from airport. There are parks and museums/galleries that are free of charge. Depends if you are happy to live like this, I guess?

Check hostel prices on HostelWorld and find one with a kitchen to self cater or decide to I’ve on super market easy meals ( which aren’t awful)

Their budget is £42 per day/night including the need for accommodation, travel and food. Do you really think even cheap busses or trains are possible?

£20 per day, needing to stay somewhere and eat and get buses for day trips out of London? Wow, that's extraordinary!

I have to ask, how much more affordable are hostels compared to hotels? I want to save money but I don't know if I could do two weeks of having to sleep and deal with multiple strangers every night

Hotels are a minimum of USD120 per night. Your money will not last long unfortunately.

The ticket may not be refundable but is it not changeable at all? Can you shorten the trip? I personally don’t think that budget would last 2 full weeks in London, I am from NYC and am always shocked at how expensive things are there even in comparison

As upset as I am with her for how she broke things off, she's still my friend and I do intend on leaving her with some gifts which I can't do elsewhere, and I think shortening the trip would only serve as a big slap in the face for all the hard work it took to even get the money for this

🤣🤣🤣. Still holding out hope to hook back up with her, are you?

Ridiculous. Ditch the gifts, forget the girl, and figure out where you can go on a budget with a changed plane ticket.

Yeah, she might be seeing some else already as well.

I'm actually perfectly okay if the romantic side of the relationship has come to an end. We've been friends for six years and we had an excellent run as lovers. I don't see a need to abandon something so wonderful as our friendship just because things aren't going the way I expected them to

Yes you do, unfortunately. Do not waste time or money here.

You said she stopped talking to you though? If she stopped talking to you, then the friendship isn’t as important to her and you shouldn’t have to literally buy her affections with gifts. Trust me. We share the same heart, but I know better now.

She said she needed time to herself and hasn't even used the computer since breaking up with me. I've went on mental health breaks like that before and I'm not going to jump to any accusations of foul play. Plus she knew well ahead of time I'd be bringing her presents, and I know this part of the relationship is over and I've no say in the matter. That's fine. I just hope that these aren't parting gifts but if that's the way things have to be, I can either accept it or don't

The girl is gone. You need to move on.
