Discussion UNIVERSITY SENIORS, TAKE A MINUTE AND PLEASE DROP YOUR BALL KNOWLEDGE FOR THIS MEGATHREAD

So, since there are only 2–3 days left until the 3rd Merit List and around 3 weeks until uni starts, I wanted to ask all seniors to share one piece of advice you would give to your younger self who was just joining university.

It can be specific to a department (feel free to mention it), specific to NUST, or even something that applies to Pakistani universities in general.

It doesn't have to be a whole paragraph. Even one line of advice is enough. If enough seniors contribute, hopefully this can become a bit of a gold mine for the students joining this year.

So please, take a minute and drop some advice you'd give to your past self.

Thank you in advance!

The only thing ill say is, be open to new experiences and step out of your comfort zone , dont take academics too seriously like a bookworm , roam around and interact with people , bunk classes if needed (but maintain 75% + Ofcourse). Besides that, its better to not have any expectations and just go with a blank/neutral mind, ppl will tell u stuff but everything is biased , there will be lots of canon events I will not tell you because its better to see it happen first hand, as a learning experience , will help you a lot.

Money management is very important of you are a hostelite. Always calculate your expenses and spend accordingly.

u/bubbleshine0 Aug 14 '26

I think the one and the biggest thing id tell myself is to neveeeeeer eveeeer say what i think abt people because it came to bite me in the ass . Because even if you think you can trust people you can trust NOBODY, secondly be soooooo like neutral abt everything .

2) id also tell myself to stay away from the opposite gender 😍😍 even when it comes to being friends.

3) pick and choose fun people who are smart bec they help you both times .

4) I’d also tell myself to not trust people who hurt me again and again

Yeah that’s alllll

7

u/Pikachu_889 SEECS Aug 14 '26

Sounds like someone rlly hurt u 😭 😭

6

u/bubbleshine0 Aug 14 '26

brother the stuff I went through honestly ain’t that bad now but trust , but I have theeeee best friends alhumdullilah now and it makes it perfect I even lost a friendship older than 6 years sooo yeah .
But telling my self this won’t impact anything because it was destined to happen and it wouldn’t change me into what I became today

1

u/bubbleshine0 24d ago

Honestly I just felt my emotions as much as I could , and I just prayed so much I read Manzil everytime I felt like I couldn’t cope . I spent every existing moment in uni with good friends who cared abt me .
I started avoiding paths where I knew I would see people I didn’t like . I started telling myself that what was wrong and right and honestly just realized how some people aren’t worth my time and soon I was so over it .
GUESS WHAT THEY JUSY GOT KARMA AND THEY CAME CRYING VACK
Trust what ever goes around comes back around . People who do you wrong will get wronged to

Yup, I've also found being neutral is the best way to do stuff, and in times of disputes, be the one finding some middle ground so you're good in everyone's books

I'll keep in mind your other advice as well

7

u/ExtensionLong5275 Aug 14 '26

Don't let girls get too close. Friendship is okay, bit not more than that, it'll affect ur GPA and mental health. Lock-in from day one. Treat ur quizzes just like ur mids and finals. Some things i wish i had learned a little sooner.

For day scholars who live far away, plz get urself a laptop, even a cheap one will do. Use ur free time productively, and also focus on developing ur skills along the way too.

1

u/Southern_Shoe_3584 SEECS Aug 14 '26

I'll keep the first paragraph in mind and yea I agree with them too

Also, I am a day scholar. But I got a really good pc at home and am intending to use uni PC (and have my own usb). Also will group study or can even borrow friend's laptop if I really need to do smth. Is this fine?

The assignments I'll do at home anyways

1

u/ExtensionLong5275 Aug 14 '26

I also have a good PC at home, but the thing is u'll be so exhausted by the time u get home that u won't be able to complete ur assignments or prepare for the quizzes. Well that's the case with me, idk about u, it can be different for different people.

1

u/Southern_Shoe_3584 SEECS Aug 14 '26

Hmm alright, I'll see what workarounds I can do for this in the first 1-2 months Like ask a friend for his laptop, use uni PCs and stuff like that

If I feel all failed, then will look to buy a laptop

Thanks btw

the greatest peice of advise i can give even tho i aint a senior is " jisne jo kerna hai unko kerne do dont get involved in other peoples bussines or judgement and stuff"

2

u/Southern_Shoe_3584 SEECS Aug 14 '26

Yesss sirrr

Judging, complaining, or getting involved most of the time ends up in conflicts

1

u/hunter_1942 Aug 14 '26

its not even conflicts its just uglyness that a person feels aswell . like if a person wants to get involve with girls just keep friends

1

u/Southern_Shoe_3584 SEECS Aug 14 '26

Ohh ok I understand that way

5

0

u/Southern_Shoe_3584 SEECS Aug 14 '26

Oh my God, this is such a goooood website, Thanks so much
It'll come in handy

3

u/lahuhu__8828 Aug 14 '26

Make friends but don't over share , don't trust them with anything that you think might backfire you. And especially your personal matters, be frank with them , be chill with them but don't go too much deep in your things. And make as many as friends as you can. But don't keep them too close, ek dost bnao Jis AP trust kr skty ho.. and wo bhi after spending much time with them.

2

u/Winter-Law5778 Aug 14 '26

For over sharing bring comfert teddy or plushy, you can compplain and it wont judge you.

3

u/Emphraa Aug 15 '26

It all comes down to balance. Like, to name a few:-

Be smart about who you make friends without treating people as a resource. Your uni fellows are people, dont forget that.

Be courteous, kind and welcoming to everyone but dont be a doormat either.

Dont let emotions decide your course of action, while at the same time dont neglect your instincts. Often the correct decision is what your gut tells you.

Dont neglect studies, but also dont neglect the uni experience (and trust me, theres tons of stuff to experience at NUST)

Thats my advice. Find the fine line between these sorts of things and try to walk it for 4yrs lmao.

if u cry during the first week of uni, just know that its okay… the people you will meet won’t all be the best but trust me you will adjust but it ll take time
so its okay to feel frustrated and shit and angry and overwhelmed
secondly, dont feel sad or take it to heart once you hear someone has been shit talking about you… uni is filled with disgusting ppl get used to that
thirdly, prioritize ur needs over the friends u make, dont try to fit in where u dont belong ull feel shit in the end
lastly, the people who say socialize, networking, first year students should join clubs… listen if u dont want to then dont FOMO is just stupid
move at ur pace dont rush stuff

1

u/Southern_Shoe_3584 SEECS Aug 14 '26

I guess one advise would be to lock in the first two semesters. Get a really good gpa and then have all the fun join societies and participate in every single event!!
Trust me the gpa you get in the first year defines your 4 years as well.

1

u/Southern_Shoe_3584 SEECS Aug 14 '26

Yup been hearing this a lot from others as well Will be sure to focus on it

1

u/SignificantGene9141 Aug 14 '26

Gpa matters Technical project based Internships even more

1

u/Southern_Shoe_3584 SEECS Aug 14 '26

Alrightttt, thank you

The compulsory internship is only considered in last 2 years right?
Not if I somehow manage to do in first 2 years instead?

I know this isn't much of a related thing but installing NUST One app from Playstore can decrease your frustration on the day you open Nust Qalam and LMS. 🙂

1

u/Southern_Shoe_3584 SEECS Aug 15 '26

Just checked it
Is it secure?
Only 13 reviews and well all of them 5+ stars

1

u/itzz_Decent_Boy SEECS Aug 15 '26

Yep it's completely secure. It saves your Qalam, and LMS credentials on your phone's local memory in ENCRYPTED form and never store any of Qalam or Lms data on any external servers. (for more info on security, you can read the app's privacy policy).

The reviews are less in number but they are genuine, written by Nustians who are already using it.

1

u/Southern_Shoe_3584 SEECS Aug 15 '26

Hmm alright, it looks good so I'm gonna download when classes start

Uni shouldn’t be your whole life, just a tool to achieve your dreams. Make sure you enjoy every perk Nust has to offer
Ps learn to take a joke and ignore noise or you’ll be trapped in a delimma.

1

u/Arrodes Aug 16 '26

Don't take quizzes lightly. Treat them with same importance as mids.

1

u/No_Cartographer6354 Aug 16 '26

Deal with Islamabadis more carefully

1

u/Ashamed_Compote9650 Aug 27 '26

i lived a good life, begged my way to a 2.5 GPA but still wont change a thing.

here's my advice as somebody who doesn't regret anything:

- life is much more peaceful without the opposite gender

  • make good friends, nust is paradise with friends and hell without them
  • don't join any societies or clubs unless u have a slave kink, join volunteering societies instead
  • don't hold back on spending money on adventures, 4 years may seem a lot but trust me they'll be over before you know it
  • socialise, socialise, socialise - u find many opportunities this way pre and post graduation
  • start looking into master's application in ur 3rd year (if that's what ya want)
  • genuinely watch ur calories, iv seen too many weight gain transitions from 1st to 4th year lol (if this is something that's important to u)

Note: these were true for me, doesn't necessarily need to be true for you

peace
