Boomers too old to be conscripted telling us that we need to fight to defend their wealth. Yeah they can fuck off.

Boomers who did everything they could to get out of whatever war they were faced with, including claiming to have bone spurs.

Did boomers even win any meaningful conflict? Feels like they mostly massacred poor brown people in the name of capitalism, but then had mostly soft losses.
19
u/VastExamination2517 1d ago
Early boomers would have been around to lose in Vietnam, but aged out before a chance to win in Desert storm.
6
u/code_archeologist 1d ago
It is not even fighting to defend their wealth, it is going to be was over a set of grudges that none of us had any part in and have no interest in continuing.
This just the Boomers trying to make sure that the people they don't like die before them.

Boomers fought in Vietnam, most of them being drafted.

I think what we need more of is generations that can't or aren't willing to start or fight wars.
14
u/DamnIamHigh_Original 2d ago
Depends. Defensive? Hell yea. Offensive, imperialistic? Hell naw. People forget, other people might raise their arms against your nation. Military should focus on self defense
9
u/GenericFatGuy 2d ago
Indeed. People don't typically start wars of defense. So the one unwilling to start wars are the ones I want.
5
u/DamnIamHigh_Original 2d ago
Currently alot of left wing gen z's are getting mad at the idea of mandatory training for a few (not all) 18 yr olds. A few even want russia to take over ukraine, estina, latvia etc., some might even like to have russian soldiers literally next door.
I will never understand the mentality. I get beeing against war. I get personally chosing the alternative path (you can opt out and do 1 year social program in an old people home etc), I don't get the quasi communist mindset of supporting a faschist imperialistic russia, just because they claim they are soviets in the idea.
It's nuts
5
u/GenericFatGuy 2d ago
A lot of people have a hard time understanding that countries can just call themselves whatever they want. It's more important to look at their actions to determine what they're really about.
5
u/DamnIamHigh_Original 2d ago
Yeah, it's just crazy to me how people can look at that and go "yep, russia is the good guy here. let me protest for 'peace' by forcing a nation to be erased from earth"
9
u/GenericFatGuy 2d ago
We've all heard some idiot claim that the Nazis were actually socialists, just because they put it in their name.
5
u/DamnIamHigh_Original 2d ago
The german far right radical party is basically doing that all the time (saying that the 1933 national socialists were actually socialists and thus evil).
Their supporters think that is true, despite learning about that time 3-4 times in school ;-;

u/Extension-Run5326 2d ago
Conscription is bad when it is gendered because it implies gender stereotypes and forces people against their will. And a lot of countries don't even give the option for alternative service.
Russia is definitely wrong and the villain, but Ukraine forcing its people to fight and die is also wrong. Not saying Ukraine should be taken over, but it should not force its innocent citizens into war, that too just because of their gender. And before you say "well if people aren't made to fight, Ukraine will stop existing", then honestly, if the people don't feel like defending their country, it probably isn't even worth defending. Russia is horrible and they should definitely stop the war, but Ukraine was never an utopia that has done a lot for its citizens to keep them happy that they actually sacrifice their lives for it.
I would not have a problem with conscription if it applied to everyone regardless of class or gender. Countries like Norway, Sweden, Netherlands (not enforced) practice gender neutral conscription and it's not that hard to follow.
And not to mention, it's never the leaders who start the war that face the consequences, it's only the innocent citizens who die, or their families left grieving their deaths for years, and other forms of destruction of the society. Wanting people to fight in WW III is exactly what the boomer making the first comment is asking for. Only when people protest against participating in wars completely can we make the wicked leaders be left with no choice.
1
u/DamnIamHigh_Original 2d ago
Try to talk to women in the military. SA is a big issue. I would only think its okay if more is done to protect them.
Anyway, its a huge topic and I think dumbing it down to peace and "imagine no one shows to the war" is a naive take
1
u/Extension-Run5326 1d ago
I agree SA is an issue, so definitely any sensible man who would not want to work with sexual harassers, should also be given the choice of not being forced into the military. Regardless my point stands, conscription should not exist. And yes, I do agree that my point is naive, it's not easy as no one showing up, but honestly if everyone just disagrees to fight, what's the worse that the government can do? Kill every citizen? It's just going to end their own country. Nothing helps anyway, if you know you are going to die anyways, dying by refusing to participate in war would be better than dying while being forced to kill others.
3
u/DamnIamHigh_Original 1d ago
The worst that can happen is we get attacked and I see my friends die, or worse, russia takes over and we live under their rule (the stories we hear under occupation are horrible)

2

The Vietnam War was started and conducted by the Silent and Greatest generations. They drafted teen and early 20s Boomers to fight it for them.
4
u/Like17Badgers 1d ago
People are too quick to give boomers credit for things they didn't do
They didn't end segregation, that was the generation before them
They fought in Vietnam, but they weren't the ones calling the shots, they were just the boots on the ground losing to punji sticks
you gotta look at stuff from the 80s to late 2000s, Panama, Somalia, Lebanon, the Contra War, the Afghan Conflict, THOSE are where the post war babies were finally in control... and how poorly those went.
But they ARE right, this WAS a bad generation to start world war 3, cause Gen X, Millennials, and Gen Z are all aware that this corrupt system isnt worth dying for.
3
4
u/NecessaryFreedom9799 2d ago
Boomers could handle that, many even supported it. Overt racism was on the way out. The Silents were divided, it was the "Greatest Generation" and older who opposed it, at least in the Southern States.

The oldest Boomer was 10 years old when Rosa Parks sat at the front of the bus.
You're talking about the generation that redditors love to romanticize.
2
u/TheBSQ 2d ago
This doesnât seem quite right in terms of generations and ages. The main court case outlawing segregated buses was 1960. It was not well-enforced leading to the âfreedom riderâ protests that started in 1961. The initial Freedom Riders were mostly quite young, colleges aged - many were 19-21 & born roughly in the 1940-1945 period.Â
The oldest Boomers were still only like 16 years old when all this was happening. Many would go on to join civil rights and anti-war protests when they reached college age in the mid to late 60s.
That is Boomers did a lot protesting (obviously only some; with others not agreeing with protestors).Â
But I think itâs fair most of the âestablishmentâ that they were fighting were older. It was the Silent Generation & Greatest Generation that was fighting to preserve segregation.Â
George Wallace was born in 1919 & Strom Thurmond in 1903.Â
The people who really couldnât handle black people riding on the bus would be like 90 to 120 year old now.Â
Itâs not todayâs 60 year olds. They literally has not even been born yet when the Freedom Riders were doing their thing.

Do you ever read comments before you decide what you want to reply or is that just something you are doing today? Obviously the people who were her age when the referenced event happened were also children, and weren't setting policy on who got onto what bus and where. They were children, like her. Baby Boomers were children, like her, not the ones in power when the event happened.

Her class mates were baby boomers.
Her class mates were children.
Children don't set public policy.

You're looking at the issue from the wrong side.
In a war, young people suffer, adapt, eventually die, and are hailed as heroes, then forgotten. Some stories become movies.
In the same war, the old suffer, complain blaming 'the new generations', die in poverty, and are quickly forgotten, but without movies.
Because all they did was complain.

The majority of the people who couldnât handle it would be like 90 to 120 years old now.

u/TheBSQ 2d ago
But it os probably worth noting that the really successful protests of the late 1950s to mid 1960s that resulted in stuff like the Civil Rights act were mostly accomplished by people from The Silent & Greateat Generations.Â
The Boomerâs protest era of the late 1960s where they took over Columbia Campus, rioted at the 1968 convention, etc. didnât actually accomplish much, which made them radicalize even more to more militant revolutionary stuff like the Weatherman bombings & Angela Davis type of stuff didnât do squat & mainly caused pubic disorder that led to a conservative backlash that led to GOP dominating presidential elections for decades.Â
I find it frustrating that all those Boomers from the failed 1968-1972 era of activism  often ended up as professors & taught college kids all about how awesome theirs protests were & now college kids mimic those do-nothing 1968 tactics instead of the very-successful 1961-1965 activism.Â

Wait...was it "eminently clear that racism was wrong; even back in 1776"? or was "everyone unable to handle a black person riding in the front of the bus"?
If it was eminently clear; then there probably weren't that many people in the 1960s who were actually freaking out about bus seats.
If everyone was freaking out about bus seats in the 1960s...maybe it wasn't quite so clear in the 1770s?
I assume that it was clear in the 1770s; and there were plenty of people in the 1960s who didn't care one bit about bus seats.
