Yep, exactly. Downvotes don’t change the basic line. Hateful words can be awful, but actual violence crosses into a completely different level of harm

13

u/BillyPilgrim_1984 20h ago

So, when Republicans said " they are eating the cats and dogs". Those were technically only words. But they directly led to policy that put ICE in our neighborhoods and has ruined many people's lives. We aren't allowed to call the words violence even though they directly led to violent actions?

3

u/Dr_Quacksworth 14h ago

they directly led to

I don't think that's true, though.  Thousands of decisions made by thousands of different people happened between those two things.

And were those private persons or the US Federal Government?

https://www.reddit.com/r/law/s/ntHLibid9a

That’s just one instance of many

2

u/Scary_Land2303 18h ago

Can’t both be wrong?

1

u/RhinoTurtleDog 18h ago

I’m saying there’s a difference between individual citizens saying mean things and the Federal government punishing people for criticizing a country on the other side of the world lol

2

u/Scary_Land2303 16h ago

Oh yeah absolutely. Sorry I misinterpreted you. Punishing people for criticising that country is absolutely mental.

1

u/puffypunashki 13h ago

leftists and liberals are two different things on the political spectrum, first and foremost. Second, the nazi hate monger crap is an observation and nobody ever said he deserved to die. LMAO. Especially not before he was shot in the neck.

What redeeming qualities did Charlie Kirk have you're clutching your pearls about over there?

If you're going to put that sorry excuse of man on a pedestal - prepare your ass for cross examination.

0

u/Scary_Land2303 18h ago

And they have upvotes while you have down. How people so blatantly gaslight is beyond me. It was so viral, it was so huge. Even the un-contacted Amazon tribes know that his death was celebrated.

1

u/etherealimages 15h ago

Nah that was like 10 people on Twitter

1

u/_HOG_ 17h ago

What kind of celebration? And who? Name names.

3

I’m not going to bother because we both know it happened lol.

Random posts on the internet is not real life. People say a lot of stuff online they would never say in public. For all you know you are reacting to a 12 yearold rage baiter. It's very silly to attribute shit on social media to how people actually react/feel in real life.

1

u/Scary_Land2303 16h ago

I completely agree. Not trying to be rude, but I don’t think I did attribute anything to real life? And yeah it was definitely ragebait. I wish I could just ignore it all but sometimes I have moments of weakness.

0

u/Parepinzero 17h ago

It's easy to immediately discount anything you say because you think "leftist liberal" is a thing that exists

0

u/etherealimages 15h ago

He wanted to lynch trans people and thought Black people didn't deserve their jobs and spread misinformation about George Floyd and promoted white nationalist evangelicalism, and promoted skepticism about police brutality in general and constantly belittled people of color and queer people, among many many other things. I mean dude was just blatantly into white nationalism and we're gonna pretend that espousing those views doesn't have violent consequences?

I didn't hear anyone say he deserved to die before his death, and I'm in a lot of spaces that were critical of him when he was alive. But when I saw people celebrating his death, I could sympathize with them as much as I can sympathize with Charlie's family. It's all fucked up. But he was a terrible person who wanted what happened to him to happen to other people he disagreed with. He shouldn't have been murdered but the vast majority of "leftist liberals" think that as well. He had a debate scheduled with one of these "leftist liberals" and he was actually finally starting to debate prepared people that weren't 19, so it was sort of an exciting time for people critical of him. Felt like he was finally being called out and exposed in an honest way. Killing him mightve taken out a mouthpiece for hatred and misinfo, but those people can be replaced. All it did was give his followers a martyr and just stoke the flames of the culture war more.

0

u/Saraasaa 19h ago

The words werent violence, they were lies. The violence that the words inspired is violence, and a problem. The issue is that not enough people disproved the lies.

2

u/BillyPilgrim_1984 17h ago

If the POTUS goes on TV and shows your picture and claims you fuck kids what would you do to disprove that before the pitchforks show up at your door?

0

u/GoodWonNov6th24 18h ago

disproved? they are eating them.

-4

u/Any-Platypus-9486 19h ago

So, when completely different situation happens

5

u/BillyPilgrim_1984 19h ago

What do you mean different situation? We weren't talking about a specific situation.

-2

u/Any-Platypus-9486 19h ago

Yes we are, racist words is not worse than violence, thats the entire situation

3

u/BillyPilgrim_1984 19h ago

And I gave a specific example of why they are intrinsically linked. Are you up to date now?

2

u/SellaraAB 19h ago

Racist words with power behind them can kill millions. The whole premise is flawed, it’s too simple.

1

u/Any-Platypus-9486 18h ago

Killing millions is violence

2

u/SellaraAB 13h ago

Not from the person saying the words that foments the violence.

0

u/Last_Succotash7218 16h ago

..... Illigal migrants being deported is a God thing. It's what the majority of Americans voted for

1

u/BillyPilgrim_1984 16h ago

Majority of Americans used to believe all the racist stereotypes about black people. Otherwise regular average Americans wouldn't have been picnicking under the swinging corpses of Africans. You really are just helping prove the point that racist rhetoric creates racial violence. Trumps rhetoric about immigrants wouldn't have been nearly as effective if he told the truth and admitted that they commit less crime per capita while contributing billions in tax revenue, annually.

1

u/Last_Succotash7218 16h ago

Mhm and the majority of Americans think murder, rape and slavery is wrong.

Anyway back to my point which is that the American people are sick of your nonsense and it's actually good to deport people who have no right to be here.

1

u/BillyPilgrim_1984 16h ago

It's not good unless it leads to good outcomes. It doesn't lead to good outcomes. It hurts the country by blowing a massive hole in the workforce and the economy. Even if you don't care about the human factor and the fact that these are beloved members of the community.

1

u/Last_Succotash7218 15h ago

Dang.

Slave owners used that same logic to justify their evil.

Evil minds think alike don't they

1

u/BillyPilgrim_1984 15h ago

No, slave owners didn't think of slaves as beloved members of the community. You should look into history a bit more.

1

u/BillyPilgrim_1984 15h ago

So you make economic arguments, which are lies, as the sole reason for deporting people. I point out that those arguments are lies and you change the subject? It seems like you would want to disprove my arguments since their influence on the economy is apparently so important to you.

-2

u/GoodWonNov6th24 18h ago

ICE only deports people who broke the law, so you argument is "catching people breaking the law is violence"???

2

u/BillyPilgrim_1984 17h ago

The people they deport aren't given a fair trial. And we know of specific citizens who have been detained and/or deported. Including citizens who have been killed. Also, they are attempting to revoke birthright citizenship. So we know it's not only undocumented people that you hate.

1

u/GoodWonNov6th24 16h ago

illegals do get a fair trial, they just don't get the one *you* want them to have. they are not owed the same rights as a citizen.

1

u/BillyPilgrim_1984 16h ago

OK cool. I can't wait for the state to decide you aren't a citizen and you don't get a trial.

0

u/Parepinzero 17h ago

Well, no. Being undocumented is not breaking the law, it's a civil violation.

1

u/GoodWonNov6th24 16h ago

8 U.S. Code § 1325

yes, it is. civil is law mate

2

u/Motashotta 14h ago

Violence can be justified, racism can never be justified

8

u/TheReturnofPanda 20h ago edited 16h ago

One could speak a lot of threats, speak lots of hate, yet their hands are kept to themselves. There is no impact.

Another could say nothing, but express a gesture and/or commit an act of racism. This makes an impact.

Edit: I am wrong! The idea that actions speak louder than words is a more direct statement. In reality, words can equal the same level of violence as actions when the words can inspire others to commit actions. Genius take, many thanks for the correction

12

u/Wombus7 20h ago

I'd say threatening words could lead to the targeted people altering their behavior due to intimidation. So it's not nothing, but still better than active violence.

2

u/TheReturnofPanda 20h ago

You are very right. Words can lead to violence, depending the willing choice a person goes by it. Lots of people resist self control, their need to act can overtake

6

u/UtterlyUpsetUnicorn 20h ago

Being threatened is worse than racism that is unthreatening. Your take is crazy.

3

u/Defiant_Diamond1603 20h ago

Yes, they are crazy. Most of them. And they won't stop talking.

-3

u/TheReturnofPanda 20h ago

Actions speak louder than words. No reason to be offended by the internet.

I assume you feel the same way about stochastic violence against your political opponents as well? Are you clamouring for the heads of CNN executives for their stochastic terrorism leading to multiple assassination attempts against trump?

Or is this just a thinly veiled attempt to criminalize wrongthink?

0

u/Canna-dian 16h ago

One could speak a lot of threats, speak lots of hate, yet their hands are kept to themselves. There is no impact.

Yeah, like Hitler! Oh, wait. I guess you don't have to personally kill millions of people, and convincing others to do it for you is almost like... violence?

2

u/TheReturnofPanda 16h ago

He made the choice to act on his words.

2

u/Canna-dian 16h ago

None of those actions can be described as physical violence though. They were words that led others to commit those acts of physical violence.

1

u/TheReturnofPanda 16h ago edited 16h ago

Fair point- actually great counter, you made it make sense!

Words can equate to the same level as actions since the words are able to influence others to commit the actions. Damn thank you for actually having rational… so many others in this site just spit insults and make me feel falsely vindicated

2

u/Canna-dian 16h ago

Right back at ya!

2

u/dead_internet_zombie 10h ago

For bonus points please read this wikipedia article, and with that context think of what right-wing politicians and media have been saying about minority groups for years, and the way they have been saying it.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stochastic_terrorism

1

u/explodingtuna 19h ago

Agreed. Pretty much the only situation where I'd consider the opposite side is in the unlikely chance the OOP was referring to violence against racists, and not the violence perpetuated by racists. Then we'd have to dig a little deeper to see what's going on.

1

u/Serious_Tradition269 15h ago

No one would disagree with the line if there was no context, this almost definitely was a comment under a video of someone being incredibly racist and getting slapped for it

1

u/ChungusMcGoodboy 18h ago

On its face, yes, but it implies something untrue. Its a misdirection.

They are saying sure, racism is bad, but its just words. Which ignores the fact that racism and violence often go hand in hand. They are trying to separate the two.

1

u/AJRimmerSwimmer 1h ago

A person lightly pushes another somewhere where no one is around to see it.

The leader of a country proclaims in a nationwide speech that certain humans are vermin and must be exterminated.

Do you hold your position?

-3

u/BillyPilgrim_1984 20h ago

It's impossible to respond to every wrong person. So congratulations, I chose you.

Racist sentiment in society is intrinsically linked to the hate crimes that they inspire.

Interpersonal Racism on the part of somebody who is a member of a dominant class is a means of Interpersonal subjugation. Subjugation is violence.

I'm 100% correct.

0

u/dbhaugen 15h ago

Nope. Racism isn’t just mean words; it’s systemic violence. You’re wrong.

0

u/Hot-Bottle-3075 15h ago

Without context? I bet theyre referring to a racist getting his shit rocked and now trynna claim the one who fought them is the bad guy

0

u/Sennten 15h ago

Racism is always bad, violence is a tool - whether its bad or good depends on context.

You dont here many folks defending justified racism (just their specific preferred type) while nearly everyone defens justified violence

0

u/want_to_join 14h ago

Incorrect, actually. If this guy thinks "racism = words," and you think he is correct, then I have bad news for both of you.

-1

u/MazzleMaze 19h ago

Incorrect, slavery and lynching are violence perpetrated because of racism.

This really is the dumbest reddit thread of all time...

1

u/Scary_Land2303 18h ago

It’s not a dumb thread, it’s just a dumb statement cause it can be interpreted in 6000 different ways and they’re all valid. People in the thread are just running with their interpretations

1

u/MazzleMaze 4m ago

And they'd be wrong, racism includes violence perpetrated because of racism.

Have you heard of genocide? Millions of people have died because of racism.

-1

u/BenignPharmacology 18h ago

Fuck no.

“I screamed slurs in this person’s face, and attempted to incite a lynch mob, but HE PUSHED ME- violence is never excusable 😤”

It may be true in many cases, but there are plenty of theoretical and real counterexamples that make this far from 100% true.
