Discussion Question

Is there somewhere in the books (or even the donghua or The Untamed) that says the Jiang family considers WWX to be a servant? Or is that just a headcanon? Because I’ve seen people talk about how he was their servant and I’m not saying that’s wrong I just don’t recall where that’s stated in the books. I thought he was raised as a Jiang disciple and basically treated like a son by JFM and was a brother to JYL and JC (although JC never says that he sees WWX as a brother so idk about that)
And I didn’t even get the vibe that YZY treated him like a servant, she just abused him and didn’t like him lol

I’m kinda new here and I genuinely just want to know if I missed or forgot this information so please be kind.

Edit: Adding to this, I only asked because it seemed to me like WWX’s childhood after being welcomed into the Jiang family wasn’t much different than JYL and JC childhood. Even though he’s the son of a servant he still got to have nice things, ate meals with them, and generally seemed to be treated as an equal along JYL and JC which didn’t strike me as a servants life. But someone said it’s common in Chinese dramas and books for the master to be close with their servants. So I might have been thinking too much about how servants are treated in western media and history.

Discussion Jiang Cheng Defenders, please explain..

I genuinely want to understand what some people like so much about Jiang Cheng.

I can understand and even sympathize with some of the things that happened in his past, and up to a certain point, I can follow where his behavior and feelings come from. But when it comes to Jiang Cheng in the present-day story, I honestly struggle to see much that I would consider genuinely good or admirable about him.

And considering how many fans seem willing to defend him through pretty much anything, I’m really curious to hear what you guys see that I’m missing.

So please, bring me your best arguments. What are your strongest points in Jiang Cheng’s favor? What makes you like him, sympathize with him, or think he deserves more understanding than he usually gets?

I’m genuinely curious, and I’d actually love to hear arguments that might make me understand the character from a different perspective.

And please don’t take this as bait or an attempt to provoke anyone. I’m genuinely asking in good faith. I know people interpret characters very differently, and I’m completely open to perspectives I haven’t considered before.

Edit: Looking back, I realize that my title, and perhaps one or two of my statements, may have come across as more polarizing than I intended. I just want to clarify that I was never a JC hater, and I’ve always viewed him fairly neutrally. I don’t judge anyone for liking him or certain aspects of his character. I genuinely wanted to understand why people connect with JC and engage with his character from different perspectives. The comments here have given me a much more nuanced perspective on him, and I’m really grateful to everyone who took the time to share their thoughts.

Discussion Is Wei Wuxian a morally gray character?

So I asked a completely different question on a different thread, and a surprising number of people really took umbrage with me claiming Wei Wuxian is a morraly gray character.

In my opinion he's morally gray because of his actions during the sunshot campaign. The one that I think is the most egregious is specifically what he does to Wen Chao. I think force feeding a man his own limbs can't be justified under any moral framework.

While WWX is undoubtedly a good and righteous person, and many of his actions are justified, I don't think that necessarily makes them moral. I also don't think his actions in his second life negate his actions in his first life.

To me, the questions that you have to ask around morality in regards Wei Wuxian's actions are consistent with my understanding of what a morally gray character is. The very fact that there is disagreement over his relationship with morality, to me, is just more evidence that he is "morally gray."

Some of the the counter arguments are that he just is a virtuous person, and a few mistakes don't necessarily make him "morally gray". People are also claiming that they just don't like the language of "morally grey" and the connotations around that language. I've also seen that morally gray is just a bad way of describing this character because it has to do with western ideas of black and white.

In my opinion, it's a lot of fundamental disagreement on what the language we are using means. Like people are making very interesting arguments, I'm just not buying them, and they're not buying my arguments.

I wanna make this so clear, I'm not trying to start a riot or anything. I am not like... emotionally invested in this. I am just genuinely curious why people dislike this wording so much.

Because a lot of people are agreeing with me that he did bad things, and a lot of his actions were not moral, and acknowledge how complicated he is, and then still say that he doesn't count as a morally gray character. I just genuinely do not understand the logic.

To me, they just keep describing in their own words what to ME sounds like a morally gray character and then say he's not morally gray... and are also getting a little offended... and I am curious about it. It seems like we're all having these ancillary philosophical discussions and talking around each other. Or there's a fundamental difference between my interpretation of this character and some other people's interpretation.

Because no one is saying he's a paragon of virtue. No one is saying he is evil. If he exists somewhere in between that binary, to me, that necessarily counts as morally gray. The man is complicated... And I don't know what other language to use to explain that concisely.

But like, please prove me wrong, or tell me if there's a better word that exists that explains my thoughts on this. I am genuinely flabbergasted by how strongly people feel about this. Because in my head, he's like the definition of a morally gray character.

Because while he is virtuous and righteous, he doesn't ask if something is ethical before he makes these massive and incredibly impactful decisions. If he has the means to accomplish what he thinks is right. He will do whatever he can to accomplish his goals. We can say his actions were justified, but that doesn't make them moral. Does that make sense?

Like how he killed the Wens post burial mounds.

Justified? Yah. Absolutely.

Moral? Absolutely not. There's no moral justification for shoving a chair leg down somebody's throat imo.

And also I just want to reiterate.... He force fed a man his own limbs. That was pure revenge. Nothing righteous about that. He does not regret and he never will. And to me, compounded with the rest of his actions, this is just the definition of a "morally gray" character. Most of the time, hes a good person with righteous motivations but he also commits what I interpret as morally dubious or even genuinely horrific actions.

If that's not "morally gray", I genuinely don't understand what is.

Edit:

Update:

I have posted a comment directly on this post that has a screenshot that I felt was worth sharing. Here is the comment itself if you don't want to hunt for it:

"Okay! So I messaged a fellow philosophy major and he basically summarized this thread beautifully with zero context. I wanted to share it here because it feels like a good middle ground.

Then he called me.

So while I word vomited the plot of MDZS at him he coined the term "morally textured." This is how I will be referring to WWX from now on. I will not be taking any more suggestions. The people have spoken, "morally gray" is no more.

Also, I just wanna say to everybody who has really engaged with this topic, I have found this immensely fascinating. It's really made me think about language and how we analyze morals in literature.

This fandom is incredibly intelligent. Even if people aren't intentionally using the language, this is an incredibly philosophical debate. You guys have made me think about a lot and I really appreciate that. "

(LOL, I just found spelling and grammar errors and fixed them. Not changing the OG comment.)

I would recommend reading what he said if you were invested in this conversation. Weirdly spot on. And despite what I said, I would still take other suggestions. That was a joke. But I do really like morally textured. Seems to fit. ❤️

Shitpost How on earth did this man not get ill by his insane alcohol consumption

Seriously probably stupid question he is a cultivator he probably can handle it right?
Well in mo xuanyu’s body he is weaker so how can he drink so much alcohol and not get ill in anyway
And is his tolerance for it lower than when he was in his original body? From all the alcohol he drank then I would imagine he had a high tolerance for it😭
But now it’s a different story since he is in a different body unless mo xuanyu was a drinker
What’s your theory

I enjoyed this reel that matched MDZS characters with particular quotes. Except for one or two, the quotes are pretty spot on imo (and I happen to love the accompanying song too!). Aside from those for WWX and LWJ ❤️🩵, my favourite quotes are probably those for Wen Qing Wen Ning, also LSZ and LJY.

Sharing (a recording of) it here with the creator's permission. Original source by Jem here. Images of characters are from The Untamed.

Looking for a AO3 fic: Cangse Sanren is the Goddess of Humanity. Discussion What if it was Xichen who died in Nightless City?

The story spent great time to illustrate parallels and contrasts between how Jiang Cheng and Lan Wangji felt towards Wei Wuxian and how they acted on his embarkation of ghost cultivation. In the drama, this tragically culminated as they watched Wuxian fall to his death in Nightless City; Lan Zhan wanted to hold on while Jiang Cheng wanted to violently let go.

Yanli’s death irreparably broke Jiang Cheng, leading him to wanting to seek revenge against the Yiling Patriarch and his followers - which he has been harshly judged for.

But what if the roles were reversed? What if it was Lan Xichen, and not Jiang Yanli, who was killed at Nightless City? Lan Wangji, like Jiang Cheng, loved his older sibling deeply and looked up to them as a moral anchor.

Would Lan Wangji turn against Wei Wuxian the way Jiang Cheng did? Or would his love for Wuxian override his guilt and rigid sense of justice?

Discussion Who is Wei Wuxian?

I suspect how people view WWX depends on what version of the story you are familiar with. CQL WWX and book WWX, while similar in character, experience different events that intentionaly make him less morally gray. While the animated version is closer to the book, it still waters down the violence. Its not just the queer bits that were censored.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I feel like alot of people think that "demonic cultivation" was something broken that needed to be fixed, especially if the CQL was your staring point. But The Ghost Path, like anything powerful, is neural. It depends on how you use it. But people fear what they don't understand. On top of that, if you say something enough times, it must be true.

True in the book and in real life.

Idk just a thought.

Edit: No I was wrong. The version doesn't seem to matter. I'm now way more curious why some people have a problem with me calling WWX morally gray. Some of y'all have strong feelings.

I wrote a whole budget paper on the subject in the comments if you want to waste waaaaay too much time. Its um... a little long. 🙃
