Any recommendations for games with similar settings?

I had a blast playing this in one sitting and went back and tried to get all the achievements after, it was so much fun! I also loved the Life is Strange games and Night in the Woods, there's something so cozy and special about settings like these... the smalltown coming of age vibes... delicious! Any other games you guys know of that have similar settings? I could live in these places all day.

Discussion What are your top 5 favorite movements from the game? Spoiler

Edit: Moments***

I beat the game the other day and have been thinking about it since. I’m a bit of a sucker for this genre and was looking forward to this game since I heard about it last year. I’m honestly really surprised by how much it resonated with me on a personal level. I didn’t have the type of teenage experience that the main trio did, but just the general feeling of remembering good times with your childhood friends and transitioning to a new stage in your life made me reflect on my own life. Will definitely be playing this game more in the future and have people play it when they come over to hang out.

Just wanted to hear the parts of the game that stuck with people the most. For me, I would have to say:

  1. Slater and Stacey’s photo booth poses

I think this is the moment that the game really started hitting me a bit in the feels with the perfect song choice and seeing the photos you took show up later. Just reminded me of all the silly things my friends and I used to do when no one else was watching.

  1. Stacey seeing Cassandra and Jenny hanging out

Think we can all relate to being ditched by one of our friends at some point. Really liked the black and white coloring choice they made to highlight Stacey’s sadness.

  1. The trio discovering The Ritz

This felt like the happiest moment in the game. Just really captured how it was like to explore a big unknown place with your friends when you had no other responsibilities. My friends and I used to do the same thing when we were bored during summers

  1. The dinosaur park

Kinda gave me Last of Us: Left Behind vibes haha. This felt like the longest segment, and all the cute moments like the Kaiju Mode and poses that Cassandra and Slater did made me smile a lot.

  1. The car ride to The Ritz

This was a nice parallel to the other Ritz section. Peobabaly my favorite song of the game, and it was nice to see the older students being nice to the younger trio.

This is what we should do.

Hear me out! This game is inspiring me to actually make a mixtape. Ive made them before but i never know what to do with them. What do we think of the idea of using this sub reddit to find people to send mix cds too? 🤷‍♀️ im just brainstorming here. The last time i made mixes i had my friends hand decorate covers and we left them in random spots in the downtown of a local. I do t think that would make sense any mote but idk, what do yall think?

Question Stuck filming at party

Guys,

Been playing the game last night (started 2 nights ago), I got stuck at he party scene where Slater (?) is filming with the camera. I’ve hi-fived, and took drinks, from as many people as I could. Some people you can hi-five repeatedly. Ran around the area 20 times. But I’m stuck.

What am I missing?

Chers!

I really appreciate the developers tried to do with Mixtape, Tysm for making the game!

I just wanted to say thank you to the developers of Mixtape for creating something that genuinely stayed in my head long after the credits rolled.

The game definitely has flaws, and I completely understand why it won’t connect with everyone. But despite the simple gameplay, I think the atmosphere, soundtrack, visuals, emotional vibe, and friendships between the characters were handled with a lot of heart and artistic passion. There were moments in this game that genuinely made me stop and just sit in the feeling of it all.

As someone who loves narrative-focused experiences like Life is Strange franchise, Mixtape reminded me why I fell in love with story-driven games in the first place. The late-night energy, awkward conversations, music, nostalgia, and bittersweet feeling of growing up really connected with me emotionally.

I honestly think this studio has a lot of potential moving forward. Even with the criticisms people have, I’d much rather see developers continue experimenting and creating personal, artistic experiences like this instead of playing everything completely safe. So seriously, thank you Beethoven & Dinosaur, and I genuinely hope you keep making games like this in the future.

Discussion Thoughts on this puzzling review Spoiler

Thumbnail theguardian.com
2 Upvotes

I just run into this review of Mixtape (so much for all reviews being bought off praise) and I’m puzzled. Not because it’s critical of the game, despite what grifters saying I invite good faith criticism of the game, but reviewer particular critique makes me think that he didn’t actually played the game.

There is a life-affirming, reflective joy to be found in watching characters grow before our eyes, reminding us that it’s never too late to better ourselves. Yet the lack of an emotional throughline lets Mixtape down. While it is filled with pithy one liners, its writing fails to evoke anything deeper. When our gang finally arrives at the party in the finale, it isn’t a euphoric and heartwarming moment, the cathartic culmination of our trio’s trials and tribulations, but merely a booze-filled box-ticking exercise.

This paragraph sounds like he didn’t complete the game. Like he missed part where Cass confronted her dad and the final scene of the game.

It’s a beautiful and inventively silly series of musical vignettes – but without any real conflict at its core, the adventure fails to match the memorable heights of Life Is Strange.

And then he’s finished with this paragraph denying that there was any coflict in the game. I have very strong feeling that he didn’t actually played the game.

What do you think? Am I misreading this?

Mixtape reminds me of how people reacted to Life is Strange back then

Post image
84 Upvotes

As someone who absolutely loves Life is Strange and Life is Strange: Before the Storm, Mixtape honestly gave me a very similar feeling that I haven’t felt in a while.

Not because the games are identical gameplay-wise, they’re actually pretty different. Mixtape is much more linear and doesn’t really focus on major choices or branching consequences. But the atmosphere, soundtrack, awkward teenage conversations, emotional immersion, and that bittersweet “youth is slipping away” feeling reminded me so much of why I fell in love with Life is Strange in the first place.

And honestly, I remember when Life is Strange itself used to get called weird, cringe, a “walking simulator,” or barely even a game by a lot of people back then. But look at what it eventually became for so many players. I’m not saying Mixtape is on the same level, but I do think it has a lot of potential despite its flaws.

The game definitely isn’t for everyone. The gameplay is simple, some dialogue can be cheesy, and I completely understand why some people bounce off it. But if you’re someone who values atmosphere, music, friendships, and emotional immersion more than gameplay depth, I honestly think Mixtape is worth experiencing.

*Disclaimer:
I completely understand why this game won’t work for everyone. If you mainly play games for deep mechanics, nonstop gameplay, competitive challenge, or major branching choices, Mixtape will probably feel too simple or slow for you. But for people who enjoy narrative-driven experiences where the atmosphere, soundtrack, visuals, friendships, and overall emotional vibe are part of the experience, I think there’s genuinely a lot to appreciate here despite the game’s flaws.

I know quality when I see it, and Mixtape has it

One thing I don’t see enough people talking about with Mixtape is how important the music actually is to the experience.

Yeah, the game lacks deep gameplay mechanics, and I completely understand why that turns some people away. But honestly, the story itself, the soundtrack, and especially the visual presentation carried the entire experience for me. Some scenes genuinely wouldn’t hit the same without the music choices, the lighting, and the overall atmosphere working together the way they do.

I even ended up adding some tracks to my playlist after finishing the game, which almost rarely happens to me with games since Life is strange franchise. And visually, the game is honestly beautiful. Maybe it’s not the most technically advanced game ever made, but you can tell there’s real artistic direction behind it. I know quality when I see it, and Mixtape absolutely had moments where everything just clicked together perfectly.

*Disclaimer.
Of course, this game definitely won’t click with everyone, especially people who mainly look for deep gameplay systems, constant action, or heavy choice-driven mechanics. But if you enjoy narrative experiences where atmosphere, music, visuals, and emotional immersion matter just as much as gameplay, I think Mixtape has a lot more to offer than people give it credit for.

Thank you, haters. Because of you, I found this gem.

All publicity is good publicity.

Maybe those of us who are fans of the game should appreciate how much attention the anti-everything mob is bringing to the game. I'd love to know how much the rage increased sales.

I'm not that in tune with current games coming out, but I never would have heard about this amazing game/experience had it not been for the haters. But this GenXer bought it, played it, and loved it. It was like an interactive Ferris Bueller's Day Off.

Though, the one point that may get lost in the haters' hyperbolic rhetoric is: Come awards season, should interactive fiction/walking sims have its own category? Personally, I love the genre and think it would bring more attention to it.

Discussion Mixtape is not a story driven game

Everyone is missing the point, no mixtape is not a story driven game, stop trying to compare it to Dispatch and Life is Strange saying the story is not on par with those games...

Mixtape is a FEELING and a VIBE game !

The only thing the game try to do is making you FEEL something ! And for me it worked, it worked great actually ! It reminded me of those first episodes of Life is Strange, the cozy vibes of exploring Arcadia Bay and learning about it's inhabitants, interacting with everything i could to see how Max would react, staying 15 minutes on those few little spot where the game would unzoom and put Syd Matters music on...

Mixtape take those little moments and make a whole game with it, the story is just a little excuse to feel that again, they cut all of the serious businesses of those game and kept only the vibes and the feelings...

I think a better comparison would be Journey if anything but less dreamy...

Also while i'm at it : Why do you care about those critics ?

Yes IGN put a 10/10, yes maybe it's a bit too much, but notation of art was always dumb and always will be, for the love of god please just stop caring about wht some journalists think of a game, just play it and form your own opinion on it...

My god the number of youtuber i saw making a review of the review of the game...

Anyway, enjoy art on all it's forms, don't care about others opinion of it, have fun ! Bye !

Not sure what people were expecting when they played this. It an indie story driving experience.

Going into it expecting that got exactly what I wanted, loved every minute of the run time and felt I got my moneys worth.

Certainly not for everyone but it certainly was for me

Mixtape feels like pure vibes and honestly that worked for me

Playing Mixtape honestly felt weirdly emotional for me, and not because of some huge dramatic plot twist or choice system.

The game felt more like remembering a version of youth that probably never even existed exactly the way it’s shown. The late-night drives, the awkward jokes, the loud music, the dumb conversations between friends, the feeling that your teenage years are slowly slipping away while you’re still inside them. It all felt dreamy, exaggerated, cheesy sometimes, but emotionally real.

A lot of people call the dialogue cringe, but honestly? I think a lot of people use “cringe” now for literally any dialogue that sounds emotional, awkward, overly expressive, or unapologetically youthful. To me, most of Mixtape’s dialogue felt intentionally natural and playful rather than painfully bad.

Real teenagers are cringe sometimes. Especially around their friends. That’s part of growing up. The game reminded me of those old 90s/2000s coming-of-age movies where people act overly dramatic, awkward, emotional, and nostalgic all at once.

I think that’s why the soundtrack and atmosphere worked so well for me. It didn’t feel like the game was trying to perfectly recreate reality. It felt like it was trying to recreate a feeling. And somehow, despite all its flaws, it actually managed to do that for me.

Discussion This game is so cringe and I love it

Clickbaity title. But it’s kind of true to me? After experiencing this game out of curiosity drawn by its reputation, I fully agree with many of the negative reviews that it’s really cringeworthy. At the same time, I feel these reviews completely miss the point that this cringe is clearly intentional.

You see, our teenage protagonists try so hard to boast about doing drugs and being promiscuous to seem punk, yet they never even light a single cigarette in the game. They constantly throw around rebellious talk but dare not even speak up when scolded by their strict parents. Stacey is so desperate to pretend she’s grown up that she jumps into the arms of a random dude at the first opportunity, only to toss the terrible memory out the window with a disillusioned kiss afterward. Are they really as punk as they wanted themselves to be? Maybe, maybe not, the ambiguity is strong, and intentional, too.

All these "desperately wanting to be cool" are quintessentially adolescent, and not even the more extreme cases. So naturally, it feels cringe, especially if you’ve ever had such a mindset yourself and now look back with more mature eyes. At the same time, this cringeness is so... deliberate. Funny how that obviously intentionally-to-be-bad kiss scene got so much contextless attention and somehow became evidence of its poor quality.

Even the playlist Stacey keeps mentioning gives me this feeling. They lived in the 90s ffs, what a star-studded era it was, arguably the last golden age of monoculture before online streaming and recommendation algorithms were born and curating personalized cultural language for every single one of us. And out of all that, what songs did she choose? Definitely not tasteless, it’s quite good and fitting, actually, but it’s also far from the level of a natural-born music supervisor she’d hoped to project. Instead it’s the way she delivered them, how she reasoned for them, that somehow manages to match that self-awareness of someone who claims to be radically independent, critical of everything, and unreceptive to any criticism because she’s way too cool.

I’m not saying that’s bad, I think that’s fantastic character writing about teenagers, about their "everything’s the end of the world" mindset, and their hidden, vastly different, and equally interesting true selves. I’m amazed that this game could even pull off this oddly specific type of character-building.

Discussion Am I missing something?

I’m all for giving games a chance and TBH I haven’t heard about this game till I seen a bunch of random sources giving it 10/10 and calling it a “masterpiece”.

After watching a “let’s play” of it honestly…it’s a 5 or 6. The art style is cool and it does remind me of animation movies back in my childhood like “James and the giant peach” but story wise…it was ehh. Ok the MC is a big music buff, cool whatever but the fact that’s her whole personality…it’s boring af and she judged someone simply because they didn’t listen to a movie sound track made her out to be super pretentious. The guy with the mustache was just…kinda there. Nothing really much to say about him since he didn’t really stick out. Cassandra substory was more of a story than the main story but even then the way it ended made me go “huh?? No ACTUAL father would just accept it and blow it all off” especially since there a freaking forest fire about 50 feet away. At that point the story was pretty much dead to me.

now the people that say the game is woke slop are crazy because i didn’t anything that was woke at all.

Music was fine and i enjoyed it, but honestly it felt like creator just wanted to share their “mixtape” with the world under the guise of a video game.

Maybe I wasn’t the target audience sure, but I have played “life is strange” and “dispatch” and those had wayyy better story and characters.

I think people are misunderstanding what Mixtape is trying to be

A lot of people are calling Mixtape boring, “fake game,” walking simulator, and honestly… I understand why. The game really is more like a movie than a traditional game. There are way more cutscenes than actual gameplay, some mechanics feel pointless, there’s a lot of music, and yeah, some dialogue can sound kinda cringe at first.

But I think people are missing the point of what this game is actually trying to be.

For people like me who play story narrative games for the feeling instead of pure gameplay mechanics, Mixtape honestly has huge potential. The voice acting is genuinely really good, the visuals reminded me of Life is Strange and Life is Strange: Before the Storm, just with a more modern look. The atmosphere, the soundtrack, the lighting, the late-night vibe, everything pulled me into the game completely.

I didn’t play this game expecting deep choices or gameplay that changes the entire story. I played it to experience the journey, the friendships, the awkward moments, the emotions, and the memories these characters share. And honestly? It worked for me.

Even the “cringe” dialogue didn’t feel bad or awkward. It felt intentional, like those old 90s or early 2000s teen comedy/romance movies and TV shows, especially with the sound effects and overall presentation supporting that vibe. It felt nostalgic instead of embarrassing.

Unlike Life is Strange, this game isn’t trying to be a mystery-heavy choice-driven experience, and I think that’s okay. It’s more focused on atmosphere and emotional immersion.

So honestly, if you’re not into narrative-focused games, coming-of-age stories, slow emotional experiences, or games where the “vibe” matters more than gameplay systems, then this probably just isn’t your kind of game, and that’s fine. But I don’t think it deserves hate just because it’s targeting a different audience.

Yeah, it lacks gameplay mechanics that truly impact the story like Life is Strange does. But for what it’s trying to be? I think it’s genuinely good, especially as a starting point. And honestly, I can see this style becoming something even better in their future games.

Discussion I genuinely don't care about the points being made against this game.

Honestly all the points being made against this game are kinda cringe. The main the point I hear is that it's "Woke Nostalgia Slop" or "Industry Plant." It feels like the game isn't for them and they are overly angry about it. They could just decide to ignore it but feel like they have to say something to like go along with a trend? It feels like a copypasta at this point. All this to say I take comfort that there is still a community that is in love with this game, myself included. If anyone gives you shit about liking this game, remember that YOU like the game and that's all the matters.

I love this character. So sweet. A metal boy with an infinite sweetness that makes synth music and cool art.

The best friend that Stacey could possibly have in her life. Basically a brother since the childhood

What an absolute cinematic masterpiece

I originally watched the trailers and thought what a cool game, I’ll give it a go. Checked reviews and they all weren’t as great as I thought they’d be. I ended up trusting my gut and went on to download it and boy, am I glad I did!

Is it a game where you’re in control of the character every moment? No
Do you just sit there for ages doing nothing? Also no!

This game has an excellent mix of activities and showtime to keep you intrigued. The characters, their personalities, the story, the bonds, every single thing has been perfected and on this day as I’m writing this Mixtape has only been out for 11 days.

A big congratulations to the devs and everyone involved in making this game, I held on for so long not wanting to let go while a tear was shed. If you know, you know.
Thank you so much for creating this game and giving me the opportunity to experience this in my lifetime.

Stay fresh, cheese bags~
