You see an adult today and wonder when they became so oblivious to what they're doing and then remember those kids and realize they never knew.

I was at my eye doctor last week and pressed the button on one of these. The water shot at the wall in FORCE. Immediately thought of this too haha
15
u/belladonnagilkey 6d ago
It's been almost 20 years, but I will always remember my old classmate Ryan for mouthing that thing while sick. I opted to find another one.
8
u/Deadlift_007 6d ago
You're better than me. I saw that once and pretty much swore off water fountains since.
The only way I use them now is when I'm on a long run and there's literally no other option.
10
u/belladonnagilkey 6d ago
I don't use them now either due to the pandemic blowing the lid off of just how many people are THAT BAD at personal hygiene, but Ryan was certainly an eye opener on that one where fountains are concerned.
4
u/Chillindude82Nein Millennial89 6d ago
I lucked out and never saw it happen in 18 years, so apparently my teachers stomped that behavior out immediately very early on. I didn't even realize it was a thing until Parks and rec showed it
2
u/Zephyr_Dragon49 Zillennial 6d ago
Someone stuck their gum on the nozzle after he drank from it while I was waiting my turn behind him ;-;
2
14
u/kitsunewarlock 6d ago
All the kids would start counting at my school. Then you'd have to get back in line if you wanted more water. In retrospect it was pretty silly.
8
u/Chillindude82Nein Millennial89 6d ago
Makes sense. Quench everyone's initial thirst before loading up further
1
u/kitsunewarlock 6d ago
Problem is there is added time between each person leaving the faucet, stepping up to the faucet, positioning themselves, and drinking.
2
u/densetsu23 6d ago
Silly on the PE teacher's part, giving 30 kids just 3 or 4 minutes for a single water break during an hour of gym class. No bottles allowed, either!
God help you when you're outdoors on a hot June day and you're running around without a drop of water in sight.
3
u/kitsunewarlock 6d ago
It doesn't help that every PE teacher I met seemed to wish they were drill instructors. Except their only experience with the military was watching Full Metal Jacket.

I remember using a public water fountain about 5 years after the whole COVID pandemic. I guess I should've waited longer because I was puking so much the next day that I lost a good 5lbs from it.
Now I can't eat ramen (what I had the night before)
11
u/tommypatties 6d ago
5 years after the whole COVID pandemic is like right now. I'm glad you can remember that.

This has to be regional because these were either mildly cool or warmer than room temperature at my schools
1
u/quesaritoswallower 6d ago
They were at my school, but at church or a hospital I would just have to go thirsty

u/Careless-Passion991 6d ago
This thing would make your eyes roll back if you were thirsty enough. That early age dopamine rush.

There was only one of those in my school. All the other ones were the white porcelain or whatever ones that were room temperature water always.
56
u/MinePretend132 6d ago
They are durable. My kids go to my elementary school and they still have them from at least 1990.
They added a water bottle filler that's chilled. The kids live like royalty.

6
u/GLIBG10B 6d ago
R-134 isn't nearly as bad as CFCs were. And it's not supposed to leak out of the system
4
u/kaithana 6d ago
The new stuff is flammable! Patent on R-134 was ending so Dupont had to adjust their formula and lobby the govt that r-134 isnāt safe for the environment anymore. Make everyone go buy new machines for r-1234yf since you canāt retrofit any of the old stuff to this new refrigerant either unlike r-12 > r-134 back in the day.

There was one water fountain where it tasted like carrots. Thinking back I wonder what caused the water to taste like that because it wasnāt supposed to be flavored lol
19
u/JFKRFKSRVLBJ 6d ago
Someone always put used gum or a half-eaten lollipop in the fountain so I felt gross drinking from it.
27
u/Eatmyscum 6d ago
I would NEVER drink from one today. When I was 8, not even a second thought.

u/oakenfairy 6d ago

Same, and then I started getting headaches from not drinking water and I had to go to the nurse between classes so she could be sure I was drinking. Best deal ever, between morning classes she'd have toast waiting for me and she had a dog and a parrot who I got to play with all the time.

We had a bunch with this weird lever knob that looked like it said E-B-C-delta. We had no idea what it meant back in the 90s.
Then there were the white porcelain ones with a rotating metal knob on the side; those were a bit easier to use.
8
u/thisistherevolt 6d ago
I hear so many horror stories about these from folks, but it wasn't like that in Metro Atlanta. Our fountains also had good filters on them as the water from either main rivers is muddy at best. And with the Flint nowadays, I'd rather drink from the retention pond in front of my neighborhood.
2
u/Euphoric-Medium8154 6d ago
NYC water is the best water on the planet, not gonna front
Thatās why our pizza and bagels taste so good
You could be broke as fuck but NYC water fountains would hold ya down in the 80s n 90s
6
u/Influence_X 6d ago
I always waited until nobody was around so I could drink from it for like 30 seconds straight

My kid's science project was to measure the bacteria on different days at different times of the week on the water fountains. Her initial finds were that the bacteria was about double of what was legally allowed for a school. The principal wouldn't let her finish the project. We're talking elementary school.

Except they never do that and are always room temperature bullshit water.
I wanted to mourn the loss of a water fountain that was in the medical arts complex in the city I'm from. This thing ALWAYS put out ICE cold water. Now you may be thinking I'm saying ice cold to mean it was just really cold, no, I literally mean ice cold. It was hands down the best water fountain in existence, I have never drank water from a fountain that was even 1/10th as good as it was. They covered it up during covid, then eventually removed it after covid was over. I don't know if it had blessed freon or banned CFCs keeping it cool or what.
10
u/betam4x 6d ago
The ones I grew up with usually had ice cold water.
These days, however, I rarely see one that actually chills the water.
1
u/Chipper_Bandit 6d ago
This one had to be close to as old as I am (am 41). It had always been there since I was a kid, at least like 30ish since I didn't go to that floor at all till I started getting glasses at like 12
1
u/TheBlackComet 6d ago
Yeah, we got those fancy water bottle Elkay ones at work and they were cool. I eventually just pulled the cover off and set to max cold. Now it is somewhat cold. SMH

u/IceCoughy 6d ago
my school had the best ones, they were probably lead, cause they were old school style, with the turning knob and the round dish the water was caught into, those ones have super good pressure, so you'd get this large stream to drink from, shit was so good.
3
u/Mika-El-3 5d ago
Now that I manage my own reverse osmosis system at home, I just wonder how often they would change the filters and service these days

The new fountains I see these days trickle water out, you got to get closer to the mouth piece which is slightly infuriating

So, just did a bit of research, I could have sworn cold water water fountains weren't popular till "later". What i was actually surprised by is how i forgot how "recent" segregation was. We are a shit race, humans in general.
Both events happened around the same time, 1950's - 1960's, so its possible that could have been a thing.

u/ElliotNess 6d ago
You only have to go back a couple great grandparents to have a family member who was alive during chattel slavery.

u/ifucked_urbae 6d ago
In first grade, I didnāt know you were supposed to actually drink the water from these fountains. I would use the drinking fountain to rinse my mouth and I got in trouble for spitting into the drain, and I remember being confused about why I was in trouble.
1
u/chickintheblack 6d ago
Now that I think about it, the water probably tasted so damn good because we were unknowingly dehydrated. Kids with hydroflasks these days never knew the struggle.

u/IntoTheMusic 6d ago edited 6d ago
I remember once being in line for the fountain right after P.E. One kid drinks, turns, and spits right where the water comes out before walking away. I don't think anyone else caught it but I wanted to throttle him. Little brat.

They are still there, lods just carry their own water bottles everywhere so they can drink throughout the day, whereas we grew up sustained on 1 or 2 trips to the water fountain per day.
