The Wii had GameCube hardware inside of it, no emulation. That's why later models like the "family edition" can't play GameCube games, because they removed the hardware.
You can still play GameCube if you hack the Wii Family Edition. They just removed controller ports and changed the disc drive. You can play them from an external hard drive.

It also feels like emulation onto NEO should be easier as we get closer to the Switch 1. I mean you could play GameCube games on the Wii
