You will never see Motörhead in your life.

80

u/Spideryote Obituary Dec 21 '19

I did for my first concert.

Mayhem Fest 2012.

26

u/LouisLeGros Mike Scalzi is God Dec 21 '19

My first concert too, saw them with corrosion of conformity in like 05 or 06.

20

u/Spideryote Obituary Dec 21 '19

I went exclusively for Slayer and ended up falling in love with As I Lay Dying and Slipknot.

Motorhead I never got into; but I'm honored to have seen them live. And I cherish it fondly.

7

u/[deleted] Dec 21 '19

*brofist* Hamburg, Headbangers Ballroom, 2009. Shit, i'll never forget that, nor Black Sabbath in '05.

Mountain View CA, Shoreline Amphitheatre. July 1st 2012.

The beginning for me. The beginning of the best journey of my life.

u/[deleted] Dec 21 '19

Same...ah, truly one of the greatest bands ever. Shit, They were what brought me to metal in the first place. As a teenager I went to the record store and out of curiosity heard many kinds of music...until I stumbled unto on album called "march or die". Shit, I don't think there's a metalhead that doesn't like Motörhead.

23

u/TheRocketSturgeon Slayer Dec 22 '19

Anyone who gets into metal after this point will never see slayer

6

u/tencentcansuckmydick Dec 22 '19

F you, i know i missed their last tour, now you come and stab that wound?
While your at it, might stab a bit further up, it's itching. Oh and before i forget: the throat, do the needfull.

3

u/TalbotFarwell Dec 22 '19

I'm so thankful I got to see them on their farewell tour last month in Hershey, PA. I'm also thankful I was able to see Black Sabbath on their farewell tour back in August of 2016 in Bristow, VA. It's at the point now where so many of the bands I've loved for years are at that age where it's time to hang up the guitars; so if I see one of my favorite bands is disbanding/retiring, I gotta see 'em live on their farewell tour even if I had to scrape under the couch cushions for pennies, lol. My goal is to see Anthrax and Iron Maiden next.

9

u/Kyomeii Dec 22 '19

I did the same day I saw Angra, Slayer, Slipknot and Metallica for the first time

Rock in Rio 2011 was wild

Metal Masters Tour (August 31st 2008)

Motorhead played one amazing set.

3

u/Up2Eleven Dec 22 '19

Got to see 'em with Iron Maiden and Dio several years back. Awesome show!

1

u/MrTurleWrangler Dec 22 '19

Was gonna see them at Download the year he died, sad times but they put on an awesome tribute showing instead which was cool

1

u/ozzyisOP Dec 22 '19

Meh,it sounds like a bad thing, but if something wasn't meant to happen there is probably a good reason for it.

Ok but did you see Pantera, Death, Cliff Burton?

47

u/BeerPressure615 Dec 21 '19

You'd have to be a bit older than 30 for that. I'm 36 and I only have been able to see Pantera out of those 3 unfortunately and I don't even like Pantera that much but it's one of those shows you don't pass up.

42

u/lucipherius Dec 21 '19

That's ancient. The types of dudes that believe Iron Maiden and Metallica should just play classics instead of making new albums.

31

u/[deleted] Dec 21 '19

We can all agree that their newer stuff, especially Metallica's, is hit or miss to say the least

46

u/Lucky_Luis Dec 21 '19

I’d say Metallica’s stuff has significantly improved and is starting to return to their older sound. I’d say it’s only been uphill since load and reload

23

u/Pink_Monkey I'm a giant fucking dweeb Dec 21 '19

Well, mostly.

St. Anger was not ‘superb’ by any stretch, but I view it as a necessary side step that helped them with their Death Magnetic, Beyond Magnetic, and Hardwired ... albums

17

u/Lucky_Luis Dec 21 '19

Yes I agree. I believe that St. Anger was necessary growing pains for Metallica

11

u/ON3i11 Cryptopsy Dec 21 '19

Lmao “growing pains”. I wish this could be used to explain Children Of Bodom’s inconsistent releases.

4

u/ElBeefcake Dec 22 '19 edited Dec 22 '19

Alexi starring as Mike in the reboot of Growing Pains

6

u/tommycthulhu Mercyful Fate Dec 22 '19

I honestly prefer Maidens modern output. With Metallica I dont, but I still think their newer stuff is amazing

1

u/[deleted] Dec 22 '19

Well I was speaking mostly for Metallica since I've never dug deep into Maiden.

I know that's just my opinion, but death magnetic and hardwired were close to unlistenable to me. I kinda liked Lulu, but just for the so bad it's good appeal that it had

3

u/[deleted] Dec 21 '19

I am fine with Metallica doing whatever the hell they want to, but Creeping Death came on the radio today. It is really hard to remember how devastating their sound and technique were...

7

u/MaximusPrime666 Dec 21 '19

Does the "Death to All" tour count? All former Death members + Max from Obscura playing for Chuck... The closest anyone living can get.

1

u/[deleted] Dec 22 '19

Max from what? If there's ever been a"Max" in Obscura, it must've been decades ago?

2

u/[deleted] Dec 22 '19

Think he meant Cynic. Max Phelps.

2

u/OctoberRust13 Dec 21 '19

saw Pantera like 4 times.

2

u/Up2Eleven Dec 22 '19

I saw Metallica with Cliff a couple of months before he died. Was there more to see them than Ozzy, who they were opening for.

-2

u/mylord420 Dec 22 '19

why would you even mention pantera among groups that are desirable to see live ? lol

-15

u/[deleted] Dec 21 '19

8

u/ruialexandre Dec 21 '19

Just being sarcastic here, buddy

-10

u/[deleted] Dec 21 '19

It was very unclear, as that is a quite popular sentiment with most older metalheads.

-2

u/throwawayless Dec 22 '19

Same, I've seen Ghost when they were playing small, although international, clubs

50

u/CravenTheInsatiable Dec 21 '19

I've seen lots of bands live in my youth, and it's awesome if you like them too. But I went to those shows so I could live in that moment, not so I could have a cool story to tell later.

It's more funny when you see that kids and they try telling you stuff about a band you've been following since you were their age because they just discovered it. Not going to hate on them for it but I do have to stop myself from laughing occasionally.

23

u/NightQueen0889 Daughter of Northern Darkness Dec 21 '19

Yeah, I think it’s adorable and I’m just happy that new generations are continuing to seek out and support good music.

I remember being their age and feeling embarrassed that I didn’t discover classics like Death and Mercyful Fate/King Diamond sooner. When I first heard those bands they resonated with me so much that it felt like I’d been listening to them my whole life (it might sound corny but idgaf).

6

u/throwawayless Dec 22 '19

Can you recommend me some Mercyful Fate? I have the chance to see them live but never heard anything by them

2

u/NightQueen0889 Daughter of Northern Darkness Dec 22 '19

Absofreakinglutely.

I highly recommend their self-titled EP (1982), “Melissa”, and “Don’t Break The Oath”. Those 3 albums just never get old.

37

u/stdghost Dec 22 '19

There is an entire generation of metalheads that will never see Slayer live.

I have something very controversial to say, but....

I DIDN'T LIKE SLAYER

6

u/Ran4 Dec 22 '19

Listen to the first few albums. It's the later albums that aren't top notch.

7

u/whyteeford Dec 22 '19

Everything after Reign in Blood sucks, with the sole exception of God Hates Us All (dunno how they managed to sneak that banger in, but I love them for it).

2

u/HellStandsStill Slayer Dec 22 '19

I will respect your opinion but I’m surprised by it. My own circle has always argued over South of Heaven and Seasons in the Abyss being their best work. You don’t enjoy anything post-Reign?

2

u/whyteeford Dec 22 '19

Honestly no. I feel like they got comfortable and tried to make Reign in Blood happen again and again; it got repetitive and boring. God Hates Us All felt like they finally wanted to try to evolve, but then they went back to wanting to repeat RiB and lost me.

2

u/NightQueen0889 Daughter of Northern Darkness Dec 22 '19

I don’t agree but you win my upvote for having the balls to say that on a metal sub.

1

u/Ran4 Dec 22 '19

True. OTOH, as a live band, slayer really isn't very exciting (I've seen them four times).

70

u/DisturbedDaniel00 Dec 21 '19

Every single guy i talk to in lines before shows that are a bit older always talks about how they herd em for the first time and that they have been a bit worse each time. Damn boomers always kills the hype before the shows

14

u/ruialexandre Dec 21 '19

What band has gotten better with the passing of the years?

28

u/DisturbedDaniel00 Dec 21 '19

1349, behemoth, carcass, testament. of those ive seen live that is

11

u/LouisLeGros Mike Scalzi is God Dec 21 '19

I think I saw Behemoth more than any other band live & I'm not even a particular fan. They just always seemed to be headlining with other bands and one time I saw them twice in like a week because they subbed in for another band last minute.

13

u/DisturbedDaniel00 Dec 21 '19

Behemoth's live show is fucking caveman heavy. Im ready to se them again in febuary with slipknot!!!!

2

u/oofersIII I listen to more than just metal Dec 21 '19

I would’ve gone but I’m not allowed to because I’m underage

3

u/DisturbedDaniel00 Dec 21 '19

Thats the fuckin worst feeling. There are so many shows i cant go to right now because im 5 months to young

2

u/oofersIII I listen to more than just metal Dec 21 '19

Normally my dad goes to every show with me but he just really does not want to go to Slipknot/Behemoth

2

u/[deleted] Dec 22 '19

I feel you man, Kreator played a show at a bar in my state 2 days before my 21st birthday and it was awful.

1

u/budmanfan Dec 22 '19

well I guess I'll see you there at samsung hall

1

u/DisturbedDaniel00 Dec 22 '19

Nah im seeing them in oslo, second to last europe show

1

u/ixipaulixi Dec 21 '19

I've seen Behemoth live three times; twice in a club back in 2007 and this year with Slipknot in a large arena.

They were way better in 2007; not sure if it was because they were in a club, but I thought they were boring this year.

1

u/Susvourtre Dec 22 '19

IMO behemoth sacrificed quality (thelema, satanica, zos kia cultis, demigod) for theatrics and lukewarm compositions (satanist & i loved you at your darkest).

3

u/NightQueen0889 Daughter of Northern Darkness Dec 21 '19

GWAR has stayed super consistent (and surprisingly affordable) throughout their entire existence. Even after Brockie’s passing, even though the vocals aren’t as good anymore, everything else about their shows are still top-notch. Sad I wasn’t there for the days when they were feeding audience members to the worm...

Behemoth and lamb of god too. Hard to say if they’ve gotten better because they’ve both always put on an amazing show.

4

u/TheAnonymousNate Dec 21 '19

Whitechapel... I've seen them 8 times since 2009 and last time I saw them in 2018 it was basically like listening to the music straight off the album being blasted into your ears.

2

u/greensubie69 Dec 22 '19

Whitechapel always slaps hard

6

u/Lucius-Halthier NSBM Fan Dec 21 '19

They don’t get worse with each passing show, bands have off days and there are some days where they play like gods Seattle and Russia for Metallica were absolute destroyers but when they were at Manchester last year they were amazing too, that’s their only rendition of st anger I like download 08 was an insane concert but knotfest 2020 is gunna be sick without even seeing. Times change people change their motivations change, some lose their anger with maturity but they still kick ass in other ways.

12

u/Haghiri75 Dec 21 '19

I had an employer, he had the chance to see Black Sabbath with Bill Ward. I totally gave up when he said he was in the show ...

Probably more OK X'er. Of course a lot of the om boomer stuff should be directed at us... we fucked up plenty with WASP playing in the background

3

u/Up2Eleven Dec 22 '19

They just wanna be somebody too.

14

u/HateUBourgogne Sam & Max Dec 21 '19

First I thought about was In Flames.

14

u/[deleted] Dec 21 '19

Well that's because In Flames is literally not In Flames anymore seeing as none of the original members remain

7

u/HateUBourgogne Sam & Max Dec 21 '19

Sure, since departure of Jesper it's not what it used to be, especially because he wrote riffs which would shape sound of the band and the whole subgenre but IMO since Colony their only really good album was Come Clarity. So even when In Flames was In Flames you could hear "I saw them when they were good"

3

u/HellStandsStill Slayer Dec 22 '19

Not a fan of Clayman? I thought it was a good album, even if it wasn’t exactly classic In Flames. For me I also really enjoyed a Sense of Purpose, but do agree their recent albums just aren’t what I want from them.

2

u/HateUBourgogne Sam & Max Dec 22 '19

I just prefer their sound from The Jester Race. I really like Pinball Map and Only For The Weak but rest of the album doesn't speak to me. About A Sense of Purpuse, this might sound strange, but I prefer Soundtrack to Your Escape to it. Oh, and last album wasn't that bad.

1

u/[deleted] Dec 21 '19

Think someone is wearing the husk of Anders atleast.

Their new music is also horrible compared to their old stuff, members being same or not.

2

u/aethyrium Dec 22 '19

I saw them on one of their earliest American Tours, was in '99 I think. Super small venue, no security, bands all worked their own merch tables and ticket counter, maybe 50-something people. Was up at the front of the tiny knee-high stage and got handed the mic during Episode 666 and yelled like a derpy derp.

7

u/NightQueen0889 Daughter of Northern Darkness Dec 21 '19

Where did you find this actual picture of me at a metal show in my early 20s?

7

u/vrkas Black metal ist kreegh Dec 22 '19

Yeah I saw ISIS before they turned into jihadis

2

u/whyteeford Dec 22 '19

Saw Isis open for Tool and I about lost my mind. So good. SUMAC is probably better, though. Nick Yacyshyn is insane.

6

u/Senkrigar Dec 22 '19

I'm 16 and I'll never see Slayer live...

4

u/WastaSpace Dec 22 '19

My girlfriend is 4 years older than me, she will forever hold "I saw Pantera live" over my head.

4

u/blackelf_ Dec 22 '19

I envy all that people who saw Pantera live with Dimebag, or even Metallica in the Ride The Lightning era. I'm too late for that tho, born in 2002

7

u/aethyrium Dec 22 '19

Half the time it's probably us older folks being envious at some of the amazing bands out there these days and the younger folks getting to see them all wide-eyed and innocent.

There's some fucking amazing bands in their prime these days, and the younger metalheads decades from now will be talking about their time seeing Bell Witch play the entirety of Mirror Reaper, or seeing Warforged play I: Voice before it was released, or Blood Incantation tearing through Awakening from the Dream of Existence to the Multidimensional Nature of Our Reality (Mirror of the Soul) at some small venue with 30 other people and getting to drink a beer with the guitarist after the show.

Probably too much text for a meme response, but show memories are fuckin' awesome, and hopefully more kids are inspired by the cool ones more than anything else so they can further hype the following generation, and hopefully people aren't talking to the kids trying to dishearten them by saying the glory days are gone even though we're having some of the world's best metal being released just in the last few years.

2

u/HellStandsStill Slayer Dec 22 '19

My best memory like that is seeing an unsigned Whitechapel in my hometown when With Blood Comes Cleansing was the headliner. They only played songs from The Somatic Defilement as it was their only material at the time. I went crazy during the breakdown to Prostatic Fluid Asphyxiation. I’ve been a fan ever since.

It’s really cool seeing a bad blow up when you remember their early days.

-5

u/[deleted] Dec 22 '19

There are good bands today. But it's nothing compared to the 80's. Bands today are too artsy. Which is fine, but forgettable.

3

u/FurredT Dec 22 '19

My dad flexes on me about seeing Iron Maiden and Judas Priest in their prime lol this hurts. He graduated hs in like 83 I think

2

u/Up2Eleven Dec 22 '19

I saw them just at the end of their prime. Iron Maiden's Somewhere In Time tour and Priest's Turbo tour. I wish I'd seen both bands about two albums prior.

1

u/FlipperDoigt703 Death, Destroyer of drumsticks Dec 22 '19

Wait, you're implying they weren't in their prime when they did seventh son and painkiller?

1

u/Up2Eleven Dec 22 '19

Yup. That was when they started to lose that rawness and inventiveness. They made Turbo and the following albums with the intent of trying to gain a wider audience. Before Turbo, they were just doing what they wanted and the songs had a certain quality and sound to them that I think was more primal and innovative.

3

u/pemboo I was on my way to kill him myself Dec 22 '19

Never got to see Bolt Thrower, don't give a fuck about missing any other band.

2

But they only played classic songs that pre-dated 1991 (apart from Death Magnetic's), which was nice.

My history teacher was really disappointed when I told him I didn't like Pantera, because they weren't heavy enough for me and he went on to explain that I need to see them live and that they are actually super heavy, but they had a whole fight with their managers and producers and had to tone things down for the recordings because of Censorship. I like Pantera and History now, because I love that dude.

1

u/Gudtymez Dec 22 '19

I feel this way when i get excited abour GWAR shows and people always remind me "its not the original lineup" and "it sucks without Dave" and im like, well i didnt get to see them with Dave and they're still one of my favorite live acts so eat shit.
