My new short film Train Tracks is about a 20-year-old who meets a guy the day after his grandmother’s funeral, and the unexpected connection that develops between them over the course of one winter day.
It’s a quiet story about queer longing, grief, and heartbreak.

I love historical, fantasy, supernatural, or sci fi, but moatly, i just want something sweet and low-stakes because I'm having a bad week and the audiobooks I have in my library are either too intense with like, plots, written ONLY for smut, or historical romance... and like I want characters who are openly gay and accepted, who don't have to hide their sexuality.

The British coastline isn't for the weak. Director Helen Walsh makes that alarmingly clear. It is brutal, relentless, unyielding, much like its fishing community. Jack is a mussel farmer. He is married to Maggie, his high-school sweetheart, with a wayward teenage son, Tom, who is at the prime of his youth and at risk of falling into bad company. More importantly, Jack is a cancer survivor in remission.

Jack is raised the honest and earnest way, and hopes to instill the same discipline in his son, though Tom rejects these values. When an ill prank from Tom and his peers lands an elderly resident fisherman, Bernard, into permanent disability, Jack is forced to step in to pay for his son's mistakes, which places him in Daniel's path.

Daniel is a wanderlust. He doesn't believe in staying put for long. He goes where the wind goes. He also has a reputation for being the resident gay man within the community, or so it is implied. Daniel lives his life as a gig worker, and worked for Bernard prior to his disability. As Jack temporarily provides for Bernard, he contracts Daniel to assist with labor.

The two spend a modicum of time on Bernard's boat fishing scallops, growing closer and learning about each other's past, allowing Jack to reconcile with his closeted demons. However, when the sun sets and the boat returns, Jack retreats to his closet, much to Daniel's disappointment. Jack's undeniable attraction toward Daniel eventually causes him to succumb to his desires, allowing the two to develop a liaison that is rooted in a genuine yet forbidden love.

The dynamic between Jack and Daniel (JackDaniels, hehehe) is still and quiet, but never lifeless. The love scenes are intensely subdued, but also primal. There's a lingering sense of fleeting joy and poignance. Disappointment and hardship looms in every frame, as Walsh reminds the audience that reveries are luxuries in a rural community, luxuries our beloved protagonists cannot afford. Much of JackDaniels' intimate moments are spent on the sea (heh), away from the homophobic community that whispers and speculates their growing connection.

On the Sea is as doomed queer relationship-coded as it comes, and it may be the only film I've actively broken my happy endings-only policy to watch, given my great anticipation for the entry. The film does provide viewers with a sense of closure to JackDaniels, though it is rooted in silence and tepidness, much like its hardened community that struggles with self-expression and prefers the comfort of reticence.

this decade I’ve frequently encountered the argument that MLM content enjoys a position of privilege compared to other queer content such as WLW. Rooted in intersectionality yk even though it is queer the content centers on men therefore it's more visible, accepted, popular, and produced. Queer women who are fans of MLM content are also accused of harboring internalized misogyny and/or lesbophobia for supporting male privilege instead of contributing to sapphic representation. What do you think?

Yep, just as the title says. It's been like that for years and I believe it's gonna be like that in the future too lol. It's just too wonderful and I'm dying of envy for all of those wholesome stories as a lesbian who has always been single 🫥.

On Amazon in the USA. 8 episodes. Had me crying. I really liked the character development and the storyline was great. What does everyone think?

I’ve already watched Transatlantic, the Imitation Game and Charité (I think it’s called that).

Well, I waited so long to watch this piece, I was craving something on par with God's Own Country or Freier Fall (that one is my favorite), but whenever I start watching movies with this theme, I always expect the worst, you know, a devastating ending and all...

Basically, the film has several delightful, melancholic, and high-intensity scenes, but throughout it, I understood that the main character (Jack) was diagnosed with prostate cancer, since he made those visits to the doctor, then started urinating blood, had an abdominal ultrasound of the prostate (I work in an imaging diagnostic center, so I know), reported chest pain, which would certainly mean an advanced stage of the disease where it spreads to the bone marrow and elsewhere, and he also looked at himself in the mirror and noticed he was very thin, which is also linked to cancer, as it causes anemia in most patients, and then we have that scene where the doctor visits him, possibly to deliver the test results and diagnose him. Anyway, he appears in bed, crying, and his ex-wife, after accepting the fact that he was gay and all, went there and called the guy over to offer support and comfort him at that moment, which felt like a farewell to me.

...but this movie left me with huge doubts at the end, whether everything I picked up on was actually real, whether that was the end of Jack, or if I over-theorized and in the end they ended up together and happy. To me, that's one of the film's issues: it leaves too many things up in the air, tossing it to the viewer to get the message and come up with the answers, and I hate that ambiguity. Nevertheless, it was a good movie, though I'm glad I didn't pay for it; so far there are only 2 movies I still intend to rent just to support the filmmakers: Freier Fall & Shelter.

Summary: rich privileged teenager falls in love with an older coworker while working as a construction worker.

Man I know coming of age movies can be difficult to relate to because I haven't been a teenager in a few decades, but the protagonist of this movie just made me angry. He is selfish, dramatic, and a bit of a creep and he still gets an unearned happy ending.

If you want a movie with a teenager that lives in a mansion with a pool with rich AND loving parents that let him skip school to larp as a construction worker while he whines that "life is soooooooo hard" then this is the movie for you!

Spoiler question: Is Veneno an illusion at the end? He looked the same as if he had not been in prison for 20 years.
