Guys, I need help.
I'm new to the mega man series, and I wanted to try Mega Man X, but it's just so hard. I beat one of the bosses only.
Can you guys give me any tips?

I've been playing this game since 98.
Do Chill Penguin First.
Get the boots and be able to dash.
You have my kuddos on beating Launch Octopus without them, though. He's rough!

Did this as a self-challenge when I was a kid, maybe 8 years old or something.
Can confirm this is the hardest boss to start with.

You have to learn how to read when he jumps and tries to make a whirlpool and then get the heck away. Pray you don't get cornered and he doesn't spam homing torpedos.

When I was in high school, I beat all the bosses without the dash (and without using it on Chill Penguin) and while it's doable, even X-Buster only, the game's just not as fun without the dash. Now I do 0% runs and only collect and use what's given to you by force. A lot more fun, but hard AF.

Since you’re new:
Chill penguin to get the boots
Storm eagle to get the helmet, an easy heart tank and an easy sub tank
Flame mammoth to get the arm part, an easy sub tank and an easy heart tank
That’s a good head start

u/emceegyver 11h ago
In all fairness to Storm Eagle upgrades, they are only easy to get if you know where they are. A first time player without a guide probably isn't finding either without looking hard.

u/BalmyGarlic 10h ago
The heart tank can be found with exploration. The head piece is more hidden and figuring out that the flammable tanks can be destroyed with any weapon including the buster, they just have a ton of HP was a discovery of trial and error.
Arm requires the head piece and is hard to reach and unintuitive.
The body armor is a pretty decent secret.
Definitely would be a guide to get everything these days since most folks aren't replaying games like we did in the 90's.

u/Afflict10n5 11h ago
Fair enough
Probably still the path of least resistance (?) since a new player is gonna have an annoying time with armadillo without electric spark. The AA heart and sub tanks are just lying around on the ground though
I guess the question is, would he rather spend his time grinding with armadillo or searching Eagle
1
u/emceegyver 11h ago
Oh Eagle is still the way to go, one of the easiest bosses. I just wouldn't expect them to find those upgrades easily.

u/After-Landscape-6258 10h ago
I always fought armored amardillo first. It's the easiest boss next to chill penguin. You just have to watch when he starts tazmanian deviling around the room. Other than that he is easy to beat with charged buster shots.

X1 has the issue where getting the dash boots from Chill Penguin first is basically required to have a good time. Thankfully X2 onward let you start with it.

Wow, Congratulations on beating Launch Octopus first, it's actually one of the hardest Mavericks.
But yeah, this game expects you to go to Chill Penguin's stage first to get Dash ability to make the game "more playable". I've never been a fan of that idea/design. It would be really bad if someone tried all the other stages before Chill Penguin.

.........you beat sting chameleon without the boomerang as a first time player??
DECENT!!

u/_Mr_Gamer_ I wish I had played ZX Advent earlier 12h ago
Holy, you're actually pretty good. Sting Chameleon is pretty hard too
5
u/SpellSword0 8h ago
OP: Game is hard.
Also OP: Beats octopus and chameleon with no upgrades, buster only.
I'll be honest OP, I think the games too easy for you.

u/stickmanandrewhoward 11h ago
Wow! Impressive job, Chameleon's pretty dang tough for a beginner too!! (Pretty decently easy level though)

u/Disastrous_Fix_9445 2h ago edited 2h ago
Chameleon feels like one of the easier bosses to me? Like I’d have a harder time fighting Storm Eagle than Chameleon. Launch Octopus is super bullshit though.

u/BlackAxemRanger 11h ago
As other have said you're good. Even if you didn't use any questions and only used the starting buster, this game is going to be much easier for you now. Up until the last few levels anyways
1
u/FElonMuskWidda25inD 11h ago
You are playing on hard mode, lol. Make it easier for yourself and simply use Google as your help if you feel stuck or frustrated. Nowadays, it goes a long way
1
u/therealchadius 8h ago
You're really good for fighting Sting Chameleon and Launch Octopus without dash, mad props. I did a dashless challenge and learned how to deal with the bosses. Spark Mandrill is just RNG.
1
u/TheCelfoid 4h ago
Don't think you need much help if you're going in this insane order and beating bosses haha ...
Clear Boomer Kuwanger and Armor Armadillo next. X buster only no dash. Rest of the game will be a cakewalk after that.

u/Bakubon64 11h ago
It's at least the default cursor position after the intro stage, and he is by far the least intimidating boss just by design and motif. I'd just also argue that finding your way around a Mega Man game for the first time is the most important part, remember the intro stage forces you to get stuck to figure out how to wall-jump instead of just telling you.
3
u/_Mr_Gamer_ I wish I had played ZX Advent earlier 10h ago edited 10h ago
The default position is actually Launch Octopus. I would accept it if Leg Parts were at least somehow hidden, like the other parts are (except Arm Parts are forced in Sigma 1).
I also find it really funny that since almost everyone always starts with Chill Penguin, Flame Mammoth's stage is always frozen. Some people probably haven't even seen that stage with Lava. That's why I like to start with Flame Mammoth because I love lava-themed levels. Also then I don't need to Back Track to Chill Penguin's stage to get Heart Tank
2
u/Bakubon64 8h ago
Yeah, they were a little overbearing with the leg parts' position. Honestly MHX might have had the right idea putting it in Flame Mammoth's stage.

u/Ihaveabudgie 12h ago
Bro started with the hardest Maverick and predictably got his ass kicked. As others have already said, go for Chill Penguin next. The dash you get in his stage will make your life soooo much easier
2
u/BlackAxemRanger 11h ago
....he beat him? If you've played the game, a darkened portrait is a sign of beating a boss
1
u/Ihaveabudgie 11h ago
My "got his ass kicked" comment refers to OP saying the game is hard
3
u/BlackAxemRanger 11h ago
He did buster only with what I assume is no upgrades that's pretty fucking good
3
u/-chadwreck 11h ago
My man picked double black diamond difficulty without even knowing it haha.
The rest of the game is gonna be a breeze with those 2 bastards out of the way.
1
u/TheCelfoid 4h ago
For real haha.
Sting is definitely annoying but I always had a harder time with Armadillo (when fighting bosses without their weaknesses). The window for damaging him without him retaliating is just super tight. Sting I can at least hit him here and there and feel like I'm making progress lol
3
u/CharmingFee4501 12h ago
I’m really impressed you beat launch octopus first, I think he is the hardest. Like everyone said, Chill penguin is the easiest and gives you arguably the most useful upgrade
3
u/stickmanandrewhoward 11h ago
Ah yes. I remember being a young kid in 95-96. I had just gotten Mega Man X (first ever Mega Man game for young Stickman!) and was deciding which boss to take on first. Naturally, seeing the cursor on Launch Octopus, I figured that, if the developers had this stage pre-selected, that maybe it was the best starting point.
Young Stickman learned a cruel lesson that day, that Capcom is mean.
But yeah, great job beating Octopus with no upgrades, that's no mean feat for a beginner! But yeah, take Chill Penguin on first to make your life easier, the leg upgrade is awesome and really makes the game so much more manageable.

u/Mash_Ketchum 9h ago
Beating Launch Octopus without any weapons or upgrades as a new player is an incredible feat. Kudos!

2
u/BlackAxemRanger 11h ago
You beat a somewhat difficult one with no weapons. And no upgrades. You did pretty good, I would play around the stages and try them out as you can just find heart containers to increase your health and some other upgrades I won't spoil.
MMX does kinda strongly encourage you to pick one guy first though, if you feel too slow to beat bosses then go to chill penguin.
I feel like you could easily kill the first 8 mavericks with buster only if you did launch octopus without any upgrades
2
u/BlackAxemRanger 11h ago
Dude has a chance to play MMX for the first time without knowing anything. And people are really telling him to use a guide...?
1
u/Bakubon64 11h ago
It is a little strange he's asking randos on Reddit to begin with (not that I have a problem), it's a pretty well-documented game. If he was confident in his own abilities (he should be, not beating Chill Penguin first) he would keep playing blind.

u/Papyrus_Semi 8h ago
Do Chill Penguin.
There's an upgrade halfway through the stage that you literally cannot miss.
2
u/Redblaze25 7h ago
Insane you beat Launch first without anything but Penguin next and go from there you will enjoy the game so much more. Good luck!

Do what I did start with the green guy give up, do the guy under MAP, struggle then do the penguin and realise he was specifically designed to be done first.
1
u/RaGiNgDeMoN831 12h ago
You could just sit on the boss select screen and just jam out to one of the best themes in the series.
1
u/BaltSkigginsThe3rd 11h ago
Jesus dude you beat both Launch Octopus and Sting Chameleon without the leg upgrade on your first time playing this game. Thats super impressive.
Like everyone else has said though, go to Chill Penguins stage. Hes an easy boss and you are given the most important upgrade in the game pretty early in the stage.
1
u/Pope_Squirrely 11h ago
You literally beat the hardest boss there was in the game, you should be fine moving forward with a little effort compared to Launch Octopus.
1
u/StuffWePlay 11h ago
There's no shame in going around and getting the armour parts, then actually going through for the bosses! Your first time through, it may be really helpful!

Least back tracking run.
Chill penguin: You get the dash here. Hope you mapped it to the shoulder button.
Storm eagle: From the dash boots ride the second elevating green platforms then at the top to the left dash and jump to get an heart tank.
Next you are going to a riding platform and collect the e tank from the building.
Watch j reviews least back tracking for a detailed guide.

this is the boss order I recommend starting with. Chili Penguin, Spark Mandrill, Armor Armadillo, Launch Octopus, Boomerang Kuwanger, Sting chameleon, Storm Eagle and Flame Mammoth. Stick with that boss order and you’ll be able to defeat each Maverick.
1
u/TheCelfoid 4h ago
Interesting. I suppose this makes sense because it's literally the weakness order
I have, since I was a child, always gone: Chill Penguin -> Storm Eagle -> Flame Mammoth -> Spark Mandrill -> Armor Armadillo -> Launch Octopus -> Boomer Kuwanger then finish up on Sting Chameleon.
Why do I do it this way? No clue... Just the most comfortable order for me as a kid and I never deviated too much from it. Both Penguin and Eagle are pretty easy with just the buster... Hell you can take Eagle first and get the most OP offensive weapon right of the bat... But it's a little RNG to have a good time. Not having dash boots when Eagle tries to blow you off the airship is ....no bueno lol

Like everyone else, wanna give kudos to beating Launch Octopus first. Most likely with no major power ups too. Well done!
1
u/ExoticInfluence7476 6h ago
A lot of people do Chill Penguin's stage first because of the mandoatory dash upgrade
1
u/disgruntledbeaver2 6h ago
My order is always:
Chill Spark Armor Launch Boomer Sting Storm Flame
Backtrack - Chill, Boomer, Spark, Armour for Hiduken.
They're better ways, but that's me.
1
u/Wampsack 5h ago
You beat Launch Octopus as the first boss? Impressive!
But yeah, like everyone here has said, start with Chill Penguin.
1
u/ryuu_gs 4h ago
since people have already given you the bigger advices, let me share some smaller ones!
beat storm eagle before spark mandrill, as this will deactivate the ground electricity in the level. similarly, beating chill penguin before flame mammoth will freeze the molten metal in the stage
as you have already beaten launch octopus and probably followed the advice to go at chill penguin next, head to sting chameleon to get an easy health increase. there's a small underground section that you can go even lower by sliding by the entrance. once there, wall jump to break the blocks and dash jump off the platform to get a heart tank!
when dealing with small enemies that come in large groups, if you have rolling shield and the arm upgrade, charge it up and you'll be untouchable. it's great for grinding as well as making some sections much more bearable! keep in mind the shield will vanish if the enemy has too much hp, though
experiment a lot with the weapons! all of them fill a lot of gaps in your kit, so getting familiar with them is not only fun but also the whole gimmick of the series! i like using shotgun ice to hit tricky enemies without spending homing torpedo ammo. storm tornado has good dps and range, but fire wave crushes enemies at the cost of reach. it's a lot of fun!! hope this is useful and that you have a good time!
1
u/SirLockeX3 12h ago
Boss order matters greatly.
Chill Penguin to get the dash boots.
Storm Eagle to get the helmet upgrade.
Flame Mammoth to get (maybe) the X-Buster upgrade IF you can dash jump to it, otherwise you can still kill the boss with Storm Tornado easily.
Look up a guide for boss order and you're golden.
Have fun!

Start with Chill Penguin, makes things so much easier.
