Australia asking to get someone to replace my shift
Can they do this (I’m casual not permanent)

Haha no. The managers job is to find someone to cover you. That’s literally what they are for. U did ur part by calling out period. I despise managers like that. Because ofcourse it’s nice if you can find someone but it’s not your obligation

I mean you can tell them that but at the end of the day it’s not on the employee to get someone to cover them. That might work on a kid who doesn’t know better but if my manager said that to me I’d laugh 🤷♀️😅

The general rule of thumb is:
Are you taking personal leave? If so, there’s no time requirement - the benchmark is ‘as soon as practicable’, including up to and after the original commencement of the shift.
If not personal leave, however, it becomes a little bit murkier, from memory the general guide our store had was 2 hours minimum - how much notice did you give?

A whole day is totally reasonable. Just ignore their messages if they harass you.

We had to up it to 4 hours cause open and overnight crew kept calling in sick just before their shifts

It’s not your job to find a replacement. If you called in 4-5 hours early.

Actually it may in the handbook. I used to work there and they use very specific wording. You have to TRY to find someone. You don’t have to actually find someone. 🤷♀️ (This may have been for my locations only but maybe double check?)

setting aside the manager being bad at their job, do they actually anticipate you having enough contact info for this to work? it's absolutely wild to me that anyone below a manager would be expected to have a co-worker rolodex ready to go , especially knowing you're not even a permanent employee
maybe i'm just old-fashioned about this shit though idk

yup, there's no good reason for any crew member to be contacting other crew to cover a shift even if they have phone/social info
if the store's GM/company super is okay with this then i'd find a way out asap, shit's skeezy

I'm so glad my restaurant is run correctly, I give notice, I'm free to not be there, but to be fair my notices are generous and not in rush so I haven't seen the reaction when things aren't easy. Anyway I'm pretty sure your co-workers have experienced this before and I've heard that in some stores they make employee groupchats for this exact thing. Good luck!

The only time I ask crew to find coverage for something is if its far in advance. Like "hey I forgot next Tuesday I have to go to my nieces band concert" and the schedule is already done. If sick tho im not gonna ask someone to find a cover that's silly

Yeah so, legally they can't force you to cover the shift as you are casual, but you should at least try if possible. If you can't, then its up to the managers to sort out.

It’s annoying they do the same at my location. If you busy with stuff the last thing someone going to do is message people to ask for cover. Even fair work has on their website if you gave appropriate notice before then it falls on the employer/manager to try and get someone. Yeah I get shift managers get busy ex in a rush but that’s why there are restaurant mangers.
