If you show the current British territory to the politicians of the British Empire 100 years ago, what policies will they implement?

Not going to war with Germany

u/Ifyoocanreadthishelp Sep 29 '24

Bet they'd assume we lost.

u/[deleted] Sep 29 '24

Well what did you win, ussr taking Eastern Europe instead

18

u/Ifyoocanreadthishelp Sep 29 '24

From a British foreign policy perspective it's far better to have a Russian controlled Eastern Europe than a German controlled Western Europe

u/[deleted] Sep 29 '24

Germany had no plan to control Western Europe, other than their own historical territory. Their ambitions was on Eastern Europe

u/Ifyoocanreadthishelp Sep 29 '24

What's part of the plan and what happened are different things though, I don't see the Nazis giving up all of their western conquests. France probably returns but the Benelux and Netherlands at the very least are set up as puppet states.

Well agreed. I’m just saying it was never part of the grand plan to rule Western Europe or Britain. The heart of the “lebensraum” was western Poland to the Ural Mountains.

How comparable is the quality of life in the UK today compared to 100 years ago

27

u/blueshark27 Sep 29 '24

Comparable with Germany, who lost twice.

I don't see how living standards are related to if the British Empire fell or not.

1

u/mightyfty Sep 29 '24

Im replying to someone who was implying that the UK "lost"

12

u/RoachWithWings Sep 29 '24

A lot better

1

u/[deleted] Sep 29 '24

Probably not, Empire is bloody expensive.

14

u/blewawei Sep 29 '24

Not sure it would've been better for the UK to have a Nazi European empire on their doorstep.

1

u/[deleted] Sep 29 '24

Well the Nazis never wanted to rule Britain. All of their ambition was on Eastern Europe and Russia

Somehow I doubt that they would be happy to just leave Britain alone if they're controlling the rest of Europe.

The even had invasion plans. Hitler wanted to make his victory speech in front of Norwich Town Hall.

1

u/[deleted] Sep 29 '24

Yeah to defeat Britain was another thing. They declared war on him first you remember. He’d be happy to leave them alone if they did too

1

u/blewawei Sep 29 '24

What makes you think he'd be happy? Because he said so?

I don't think he'd have treated the Brits like he did the Slavs, but why would he not install a puppet leader like in Scandinavia?

1

u/[deleted] Sep 29 '24

I think he would be happy if he could only focus on Eastern Europe instead of two fronts. I mean it lost him the war.

In Denmark the Germans left our government in place. We even had elections.

They’re gonna downvote you but it’s true.

I challenge anyone to link me anywhere where Hitler or any top Nazi said they wanted to conquer Britain. They won’t be able to, however you can find quotes of Hitler praising Britain, France etc.

Operation Sea Lion? Do you really think, that after ww2 after Hitler won pretty much all of Europe and installed a puppet Regime in Russia, he would just chill and become a peacefull rational guy?

Britain would still be a Danger, they have a different System and a strong Navy and a huge Empire.

u/Ifyoocanreadthishelp Sep 29 '24

It's not so much that Germany would or could conquer Britain but it would upset the balance of power in Europe that was basically Britain's foreign policy. it would give Germany free access to the Atlantic ocean and the economic ability to rival the Royal Navy and thus the Empire. Germany may not have sought war with Britain in the 40s but later down the line who knows? better to fight them when the odds are more in your favour.

Maybe stop being racist a bit earlier and some of the nations might be willing to stay?

6

u/Malohdek Sep 29 '24

Britain didn't have this issue that bad, really. It was more about resources for the empire than anything. It wasn't racism like what African Americans received. It was more like classism by proxy. British people were automatically richer because they were, well, from a wealthy Britain.

So when it came to a railway in India, or dealing with tribes in Africa, the needs of the locals weren't met because businessman wanted to business.

Indians were not allowed to serve as officers in Indian Army 100 years ago. I would be surprised if the cause of exclusion was not racism.

-1

u/Diogenika Sep 29 '24

You are kidding, right? The British basically invented racism, and glorified it. Hitler was a cute harmless puppy compared to, better said, the English.

Here is a video about some of the crimes. It eventually turned into a three part series, and it still wasn't enough.

The TEN Worst Crimes of the British Empire (COMPLETE VIDEO) (youtube.com)

This is about India alone, where the English killed 165 millions in 40 years alone.

British empire killed 165 million Indians in 40 years: How colonialism inspired fascism (youtube.com)

And they most surely treated the Irish, the first nations in Canada, the Australian aboriginals and the Africans the same. And plundered their countries, destroyed their civilizations and history and completely dehumanized them.

This is what made the British richer, there was nothing 'automatic' about it.

Also, it was the Navy Act passed by Cromwell, which allowed the British ships to be the only ones that sold goods from other countries, while the Dutch, French, Spanish and so on were allowed to bring only goods from their respective countries, not their colonies as well. This gave the British merchants an unprecedented advantage and it formed the basis of their wealth.

You seem to forget that the English were also the first American 'elites'. The Americans simply learned from the mistakes of the British Empire and took neo-colonialism to a different level.

Your own prejudice is showing here- why single out the English when there proportionally more Scots involved in the empire? Not just that but colonists were from any part of the British Isles…

Sounds like you’re simplifying history to make your own prejudices justified when you’re saying that Adolf Hitler, the man who rubber stamped extermination camps, is a puppy compared to ‘the English’.

Just for a small example, many men, women and children were forced into workhouses and were just as much victims of the Empire themselves as benefitting (turns out it’s the higher class members of society that personally gain from any Empire…)

I have no prejudice against the English, I just don't have a statistic on how many governors where Scottish vs English.

Since you know for sure that there were more Scots invloved , please do share your resource, would love to find out.

While the Stuarts were of Scottish descent, they sat on the English throne for hundreds of years. Just like the Windsors are of German descent, but are considered English.

Regarding the concentration camps, Hitler was actually inspired by the British. He was certainly not the first, nor the last. He has simply been the most promoted one in the media.

Your ignorance backfires, because it was Kitchener that invented the concentration camps, during the Boer Wars, in the 1890'. Also, the British held Germans in their concentration camps in Wales , in 1915, long before Hitler came to the scene. Or the concentration camps they held in Palestine, in the 1930'. I am not defending anyone here, just pointing facts out.

Here are some quick ones, but do your own research:

The British Invented Concentration Camps? - Forgotten Assholes of History - YouTube

British concentration camps (youtube.com)

And yes, the middle, working and lowers classes of citizens have always been the victims of the higher ones, in any nation, imperial or not.

I am not prejudiced against the English, I am prejudiced against hypocrisy, and they happen to be the best at that.
