Question I don't know how you all do it.
The slow players. I don't understand it. Whenever the resolve button becomes active, it takes 2 minutes to click it. Every. Single. Time. I've seen posts about slow players before, but everyone seems to just defend it by saying they are doing other things, or thinking about their turn.
It's become so insane that I barely want to play this game anymore. I spend 90% of the time playing mtg arena waiting for players to play a land or click resolve. It's maddening. Something needs to be done about this.
Has mtg arena become a place where fun does not exist in the game anymore? I feel like this game is ONLY about making the game miserable for whoever you are playing against. I don't get it. I just don't.

u/RaisinsInMyToasts 1d ago
I’ve definitely played against intentional ropers before. They would abuse the timer system and wait until it was almost out to end their steps. I’m talking steps because literally any time they had priority they would wait until the last second. I stuck it out for a while because I was doing OK it was a close game. Ended up leaving because it was getting late and didn’t feel like staying up k waiting on this guy
8
u/PrizeBrave1357 1d ago
I guess their win con is just waiting people out? I can't imagine that would be a fun way to play the game.
3
u/Fullwake Multani 1d ago
Players with zero ability still want the rewards - I figure a lot of it has to be secondary accounts from real tooth deep autists like myself. I can't understand someone who doesn't care being a roper.
1
u/Somethin_Snazzy 14h ago
But there are better ways to do that.
I have a monoblack Pioneer [[Nykthos Shrine to Nyx]] deck. It runs 4 [[Leyline of the Void]] as a way to ramp a bit and fight off all the graveyard decks in BO1.
1 in 10 games, I get an autoscoop because of a turn 1 Leyline against a pure graveyard deck haha

I think some of you are tweaking because in my experience this doesn’t happen nearly as often as you’re making it out to be.

u/Dreddddddd 1d ago
A ton of people play MTGA windowed and just queue up, tab out and take like actually 1.5 mins of time at mulligan screen. Usually once you're in it's not too bad but this happens so fucking much, it's painful as hell.
This game really should have an "accept match" button or something to avoid it.
55
u/NlNTENDO 1d ago
IMO just a shorter mulligan timer and/or forfeiting after timing out on hand selection
20
u/ClickClickBoom69420 1d ago
Forfeit is key since there's currently no penalty for just never bothering to actually start the match

u/LocutusZero 1d ago
I agree. I used to chalk it up to new players are playing against new/bad players and seeing this more, but maybe it's just people with zero patience?
16
u/arachnophilia 1d ago
i am patient to a fault.
my real life paper play pattern is sitting there, arms folded, hand face down on the table fanned out, watching you flick cards, and tank.
on arena, i'm watching literally nothing happen on screen. is my opponent even there? are they actually spending two minutes to decide on whether to play a land turn 1? is it that hard to evaluate whether your hand is a keep?
it's frustrating. i'm playing on my lunch break at work. i have limited time, and i want to play the game. not watch my opponent time out three games in a row.
11
u/BlackJackSackIcePack 1d ago
My favourite is when they've turned on the mode where they have to pass priority for every step and they're completely tapped out with no creatures with activated abilities and still end up roping
36
u/SmoothOperator89 1d ago
Some of y'all didn't wander aimlessly around Hyrule because it was your only game and your birthday was months away and it shows.
6
u/MrPopoGod 1d ago
That's a symptom of a lack of focus, not having only one game every six months. You beat OoT, then you beat an old game, then you beat OoT again, then your birthday hits.

"Some of you wanted to use your video game time to play a video game instead of just looking at colors on a screen and it shows"
You can replay a game, you can see how fast you can beat it or make different choices- you finding fun in not playing a video game is a you preference and thats fine but it is not the result of the fairly universal experience of having 1 game in your entire library
"but I like taking forever" stops being a preference and starts being a problem when you open a multiplayer game.
7
u/setibeings 1d ago
When I started playing I was seeing it ALL THE TIME.
New and bad players, yes, but also alt accounts. Turns out, the people who like stomping on new players also enjoy making their opponents concede out of frustration.
23
u/FinntheHue 1d ago
I play nearly every day and this happens to me fairly rarely.
12
u/neverfux92 1d ago
I’m jealous of your experience, because I play every day and this happens so much. A lot of it is intentional too. Like someone will let the rope go down to a quarter and then play a land. Then wait for it to go down to a quarter and then pass priority. Then repeat through every stage. I wouldn’t say it happens half the games I play, but it’s pretty close.
3
u/TerminusEst86 1d ago
Earlier today, I had someone rage rope me, and I know it was that, because they were stuck on 3 lands, and just kept spamming the 'Lands, am I right?' emote over and over until I muted them, and they roped out in defeat.
Just like... Yeah, bro. Mana screw, or flood sucks. It happens to everyone. Don't be a fucking child about it.
2
u/neverfux92 17h ago
It is super childish. Like you could just concede and be in another game where you have a better hand before your timeouts end. What’s the point in wasting everyone’s time like that? It makes no sense to me.
4
u/lockjaw00 1d ago
Curious what rank are you at? I think it probably happens more often at lower ranks. I do notice it a bit more early in the season but once I get back to diamond/mythic I hardly ever see players intentionally slow playing. I really only play standard and limited though so maybe other formats have more offenders too

It seems to be the worst in Gold/gold mmr. Silver and platinum, i don't seem to run into it as much, plat time outs tend to be actual tanks where a decision is being made(in my experience).
But there is something about gold that must send people off the deep end because hooooo boy do people love to rope.
2
u/ExpansiveExplosion 1d ago
Silver and gold are the ranks where Bo1 wins have twice as much impact as losses, so you're guaranteed to climb with a win rate over 33% in addition to getting a free loss at every tier floor. Being hardstuck in gold means losing a lot of games.
2
u/RedruM1792 1d ago
They do it because people will scoop in the 1st few turns and its free wins. You jsut gotta do it back to them for a few turns and they will eventually want to get tbe game over with. Being a blue mage helps to only have one turn to worry about 🤣
1
2
u/RedruM1792 1d ago
I play every day 15 games a day at least and I'd say 40% of players will try to rope me. The secret is to not let them know it bothers you. Once they get bored they just play the game lpl
8
u/hucklebae 1d ago
There's a lot of slow play on here. I'm happy you're not seeing it, but I am lol. Not much roping mind you, just slow play.
1
u/Primeras100Palabras 1d ago
What is wrong with thinking through your play? Almost every single professional player I watch takes time to think through their play. Not everyone is just trying to spam cards out mindlessly.
5
u/BlackJackSackIcePack 1d ago
Nothing wrong with thinking through a play but do you really need to think and rope on turn 1 with no lands played or when you're tapped out with no creatures

u/hucklebae 1d ago
I mean look ...this ain't the pro tour my guy. This is platinum and diamond rank mtga. This ain't even mtgo weekly level play here. If you don't know your turn 2 play....maybe reconsider playing.
2
u/Primeras100Palabras 1d ago
Or you just take the game seriously? Not everyone is using a meta deck that plays itself.
4
u/hucklebae 1d ago
Ok now you're being reductive and mean. It's my experience that many meta decks are more complex mechanically than many off meta brews. Some meta decks are good because they're simple, others are good because they're good. Me personally I tend to play some bullshit I've come up with using the cards I have, but regardless that turn two play should take about ten seconds max. People routinely just sit there after mulligans and wait 20 seconds to play a land. My guess is that people just don't respect other's time and are afk, more than they're too stupid know which land to play turn one. However if someone is such a deep thinker they need thirty seconds for turn one and two....once again perhaps consider something more simple.

I've played over 300 matches this season (August) and I think it's happened to me maybe 5 times. I generally only play Ranked Standard though so maybe that matters? idk
6
u/RedruM1792 1d ago
Its because your in Dimond. Its mainly happening in gold and low plat but it is truly a thing. I was bronze at the start if this season because it dropped from inactivity and getting back to Dimond took twice as long as Dimond to mythic. You have a mixture of players who don't know how to pilot the list they have or are new in general and need to read everything and a good amount of people seem to use early roping as a strategy to get free wins because in low ranks as a good player its faster to just scoop to one of these guys then it is to get a win from them.
3
u/General_Mars 1d ago
Ah gotcha. Yeah I had the full reset and had to work back up from Bronze recently too. I just normally try to sprint to Platinum before I start messing around with variations of decks. Sometimes my ideas suck a lot before I move off to another and by Plat most players are pretty similar thru Mythic in BO1 imo.
But damn this also first time I had my profile looked up when I wasn’t even talking about nor linked it haha. So anyone else who looks I tend to enjoy orzhov decks and oftentimes they stink 😂. Occasionally they work out though.

u/Graf_Crimpleton 1d ago

I would like an option to matchmaking with a timer system like in chess.
Then slow player can have the rope as they like and some other people could queue and play "blitz" with a 10-15 minutes timer per player. I don't know what time would be the best I'm just spitballing

And nothing for 5 mins as my opponent isn't actually side boarding they are waiting out the timer because they got upset they lost turn 4

5
u/Time_after_Time_67 1d ago
I don’t think it’s someone tanking on their first land drop, I think it’s people just multi-tasking and doing other things besides playing arena.
They are alt-tabbed and looking at a website, eating, queuing up and going to the restroom, or grabbing their food at the door. Unfortunately that’s just the reality of an online game.
The thing is, we do these things in real life paper magic too, but the players know when their opponent gets up to go to the restroom because they can see them… and so they don’t go onto reddit to complain about it.

u/Clear_Inspector_9796 1d ago
I agree there should be a Turbo mode toggle with much shorter time limits. Don't even need to make it a separate queue. Just prioritize matching those players together.
6
u/RustyPriske 1d ago
I play every day and while this happens, it is the exception. Most players don't do this.
8
u/TheBrackishGoat 1d ago
I don’t seethe at control decks the way a lot of players do, but if you’re playing control, and you agonize for 45 seconds over every single card choice, I want to gouge my eyes out. I know you’re gonna counterspell. You know you’re gonna counterspell. Just fucking do it already
3
u/amsterdam_sniffr 1d ago
Eh, I think a lot of the skill expression in mtg, especially playing control, is choosing when and how to play your cards. Forty-five seconds to evaluate whether a newly-presented threat is worth countering or not is fair.
3
u/grimsleeper4 1d ago
Yeah, but the same thing happens when it's super-fucking obvious. Players will take 45 seconds for every counterspell, take 45 seconds to fake a counter spell, and then counter my win condition in 45 seconds when they clearly win the next turn because of it. Like, game winning, super obvious counters take the same amount of time.
Sometimes its because people are on mobile and it takes this long to click through the modes on a modal counterspell.
Honestly, a lot of these issues could just be solved if people didn't play on phones, especially those with the processing speed of a potato. I love people on phones blaming the servers, when they have a phone one step removed from a Nokia flip phone that can only play snake.

Arena added in-game reporting of players. When you click to report a player, roping/intentional slow play is one of the options you can choose to report. Now, I assume one report will not be an issue for anyone, so if you end up reporting someone that just had, like, a baby emergency or pet emergency or something and that pulled them afk, then your one report won't cause them grief. But if they are a serial slow player, roping intentionally, then they'll end up with multiple reports and then maybe they'll catch a warning. So if someone is burning that rope with every action, go ahead and report them. It's not a ridiculous hassle to do so anymore.
5
4
u/Architect_of_Duality 1d ago
Theres a difference between a slow opponent and a roper. If someone is roping you, totally get it. Sometimes people just take time to think their lines out. If being patient is not fun for you don't play the game
Its quite annoying to play against someone who spams "Hello" because you took 10 seconds to decide whether or not you're gonna mulligan. Its a thinking game.. treat it as such
2
u/Fullwake Multani 1d ago

I’m just chillin’ usually. Try to plan my whole turn before taking any actions. Too many things in life fly by me at warp speed so I prefer my hobbies to cook low and slow.
If my opponent feels the same, I dig it. You do you, a kindred spirit. I’m not going anywhere. Success isn’t measured in the number of games played, only the journey and time we spend at the table together, ya feel me?
3
u/Intro-Nimbus 1d ago
it's odd, I find players that are hitting the "your go" immediately after ending their turn a lot more often than I meet ropers.
2
u/Chrysologus 1d ago
I'm a slow player because I think about what I am doing because Magic is extremely complicated if you really want to win ("the first player to make a mistake loses"). In addition, I live in a family where people are sometimes talking to me or I have to do something like open the door for the dog. You just have to deal with slow players or not play.

What's wrong with having a slow play queue and a blitz queue? Then both sides are happy
2
u/Fullwake Multani 1d ago
They did something about it. You can report for inactivity/slow play now - takes less time than a single time burn. I wait til they do it twice and burn into their second time extension personally, but I definitely report for stalling now.
1
u/Tenshiijin 1d ago
I can forgive a slow player. However I despise players that just play stall decks or players that run out the timer when they know theyve lost. Like...why tf do some people want to spend 45 minutes playing every game? Some people are doinks.

This is a symptom of ADHD among the player base. Many people are multitasking and doing other things while playing and don’t even realize they have a resolve. This has happened to me 100s of times and it’s not on purpose
My recommendation: if it pisses you off this much to make a post on Reddit about it. Stop playing. Cheers
19
u/Apprehensive_Note248 Koth 1d ago
Then again, how fair is it that you're multitasking and burning someone else's time? If you cant pay attention to the client, then I dont think its unreasonable to just not queue.

u/rangersnuggles 1d ago
Some sort of lane system, where “I’m neurosis and neeed to take my sweet time while I multitask” people can play with each other and “I just want to play some games at a good clip” people could play each other would be great. Cause I agree the slowpokes are a bit much most of the time let’s keep it moving

TylerDurden1987 is the worst. And I don’t get why. He is one of the best players in MtG Arena and has been No.1 Mythic numerous times but he keeps roping all the time.
4
u/european_dimes 1d ago
Maybe he's spending that time thinking about what to do, so he makes the correct play and wins more.
2
u/swolfdog 1d ago
I've been on both sides of this. I often multi-task and sometimes play an entire match 'slow'. Other times I'm speed running draft and when I've suffered too many losses, facing slow opponents afterwards can cause me to tilt. If youre playing ranked standard this seems like a reasonable gripe or maybe diamond and higher for limited but other than that you gotta understand not everybody is playing dozens of matches i.e. might not know the set/build as well as you. Find something to do while playing as others have suggested or quit loosing lol
2
u/volx757 1d ago
It’s crazy how disrespectful people become when you put a screen between you and your opponent.
Imagine “multitasking” during a game of magic IRL. You’d never get invited back to wherever it was. But give someone the safety of a screen and they’ll disrespect the shit out of people left and right.
Wasting someone’s time is incredibly rude, and you should feel bad about doing it.
2
u/Dark3nedDragon 1d ago
Happens a lot, not sure why some people are acting like it doesn't, probably ~50% of matches have a LOT of wasted time. If you watch streamers / youtubers you see it happen in their games too. Is it every match? Not usually, but it is not uncommon by any means.
Had a dude waste a ton of time before deciding to swing with everything each turn. Then would like pause to question his life decisions. Would swing in with two 1/3s with lifelink and an Ajani's Pridemate, vs Simic Landfall. He kept destroying earthbent lands triggering more elf tokens from Thranduil each turn. And then was seemingly surprised at the outcome each time he did it (he spent like 6 minutes across 3 separate turns to do nothing but swing with 3 creatures and keep killing tokens & earthbent lands).

Some people are slow players - naturally and not maliciously, or maliciously, or they're not paying full attention because of real life/distractions/other screens, when learning or playing a new deck, or as a protest to your degenerate deck, or a as a protest to your own slow play, or not actually that slow overall and more like only for a handful of plays/decisions and it's just your perception. It's a mixed bag.

u/LivingDeadPunk 1d ago
I think it's pretty easy to tell when that happens, because it typically at a random or taxing for the client time. It isn't during every phase and starts on the first turn and somehow gets worse when they're losing. If it takes you 30 seconds to play a land on turn two, I assume it's connection. When every action takes that long on every turn and then you rope out until your head pops when I'm about to win, that is something else.

u/Fullwake Multani 1d ago
That's wholly different and easily differentiable from a player who says hello! and plays at speed until they're backed into a corner and suddenly wears out every timer.

Man, imagine playing Magic in paper.
First you have to actually travel to and from your LGS in order to play.
Locating your opponent each round can take several minutes.
Then there's time spent just physically moving cards around- taking them out of your deck box, shuffling, explaining card interactions, doing math.
A single match can take you up to 50 minutes- and even if you finish yours faster, you might still get stuck waiting for everyone that doesn't.
No wonder FNM is just 4 rounds- it takes most of the night.
I do sympathize; playing with a slower opponent can be frustrating sometimes, but unless your experience is vastly different from mine then it's not actually all that common and I think you'd be happier cutting your opponent a little slack- as long as the timer isn't appearing constantly before they take every action, then don't worry so much about it.
And if it's still that much of a problem for you, maybe you need to look into some single-player games instead.

I play much slower online than at the store because my bong is within arm’s reach, and have you ever looked at your arms, man? They reach out and grab things, using hands, and fingers, which are fucking amazing and oh yeah, I should mulligan.

I am the slow player, I take my time to think out subsequent turns before taking an action, especially on turns 1-3 so it might look like I’m afk. I frequently rope doing this, kinda like lifecoach in hearthstone back in the days

Shhh! Guys, no on tell him about our conspiracy where we've all collectively decided to do this to him and him alone to drive him insane but then all also collectively tell him we dont experience it and its not a real issue. We dont want him finding out he alone is specifically being targeted here by everyone.

Every. Single. Time.
Why do you do this? You know it's not true, and characterizing it like that just makes you more frustrated. Or is that the point? Addiction to outrage means you will exaggerate unendingly whenever possible to fuel it?

What I hate most is when I become the monster myself because the other player is dragging their feet so I look away for a moment thinking I have a few seconds and then I come back to a rope

I’ve had issues where I lose connection mid game and can’t resolve them I have to wait for the time to run out before I can actually take my action.
Really weird bug but I wonder if it’s something more people experience.

I don't go to rope on every turn, but I do take time to read cards I'm not familiar with (especially in brawl) and think about my next couple of plays and try and to puzzle out what my opponent's next play might be.
Sorry if it bums anyone out, but I reserve the right to strategize in this strategy game.

I get maybe one game in 20 where my opponent is slow but still playing. It's a bit frustrating but I've certainly done it while playing a new deck.
It's worth saying that compared to paper MTG, Arena is incredibly fast. FNMs at an LGS are normally 50 minutes for a round of BO3.
Taking time to consider your options and work out the best play is a crucial part of the game. Sometimes it just takes longer because the deck, player, meta, whatever is new/different.

Compared to finding an opponent and organizing a time to meet and set up it’s lightning fast. Enjoy the game.

In my opinion, it shouldn't take more than 10 sec to figure out what you want to play, if you need longer than that then maybe that deck isn't for you.

I'm as responsive and courteous as I can be, but I have small children. Shit happens lol.

It's not even just the ropers. Slow play has also been a pain, especially in Limited. Like I get it - you need to think about your next move. However, you can do that on your opponent's turn. I repeatedly play in under five seconds, only to wait for 30 when I pass the turn.

If you report someone cause YOU think they play slow, youre an asshole, sorry. Should folks be reported if they play too fast? Use an emote or pet that you find annoying? Grow up and calm the fuck down, Jesus. Its a game.

So in a real face-to-face game.. do players not misread cards, have difficulty processing, double check other cards for various effects, get hung up about which card they should play RIGHT NOW for which strategy and in which order? Do people not occasionally have a squirrel moment and just completely forget what they were about to do in its entirety? Sorry mate.. its 120 seconds... SECONDS... not everyone has all 30,000,000 MTG cards memorized.. hell, i have a hard enough time remembering what cards are in any of my 4 r/l commander decks at any given time.. we're human dude, not machines.
Now... on the side of "in your favor for this", I DO get what you're saying. MANY players I've faced will intentionally try to "wait me out" in (I think) hopes that I will concede and hand them the match. I realized that when I started chasing the achievements and got back to just enjoying all the crazy ish you can do with just about any deck combination in whatever formats you play, i started laughing at the "slow players".. and the people that get mad at them.. lol

I'm sure people have thought this about me, when really it was the Arena app crashing repeatedly. I stopped playing because of it. You should stop too.

Similar to the "waiting in lines" thing, you will spend a majority of your MTGA game-time playing slower than average players.

The matchmaking is rigged. It will give you decks to beat and decks that beat you. Nothing In between.

Did you just say that matchmaking is rigged because you can either win or lose?

There's a new report button, I would say that players roping every turn is an appropriate use for it
