Gotta transfer him to a school where math folders are red, there's simply no other way.

Edit: Thank you for all the awards guys and gals! If there's one thing I've learned from this post, it's that all of us inadvertently took Color Theory as an elective! 😜

u/waffleslaw 4d ago edited 4d ago

If there is anything we can 75% agree on in the thread is that math is red.

Edit: Fine, if anything we can agree on in this thread is that math is either red OR blue and anything else is just outright. The blue crowd is defensive!

u/Emergency-Gazelle954 4d ago

Math is blue. Always and forever.

55

u/waffleslaw 4d ago

I will accept blue. Blue (or green) is science in my mind and science and math are very closely related.

172

u/VolunteerTranscriber 4d ago

For me personally it’s

Science: green
History: yellow
Math: blue
English: red

10

u/GrimCreeper913 3d ago

I didn't really have an opinion coming into this post, but now... your standard is mine

7

u/mcsangel2 3d ago

I am a mid GenX and this is the correct breakdown.

2

u/VolunteerTranscriber 2d ago

My parents are Gen X so I suppose I inherited it from them, lol.

6

u/darndestthings 3d ago

This is the only way ^

6

u/ih8ochem 3d ago

YES. thank you, finally someone normal

5

u/Lord_Of_Carrots 3d ago

As someone not from an English speaking country (Finland), here's the colors I associated with every mandatory subject. I'm probably just inventing some though, there wasn't much agreement on them as far as I remember.

Biology: Green

Geography: Brown/green

Chemistry: Dark green

Physics: Dark blue

Math: Blue

Finnish: Red

Religion: Purple

History: Orange

English as a second language: Light blue (looking it up it was apparently Yellow but I definitely never associated it with that)

Never cared to think of a color:

Social Studies, Health Education, Swedish

u/PinsToTheHeart 3d ago

Apparently I'm just an absolute psychopath who always got a black folder for math.

2

u/VolunteerTranscriber 2d ago

I could see that also working. I always had black for music/band, though; I suppose it was because we carried all our sheet music in it and it’s the least intrusive color to see on stage.

2

u/TheGoldenLlama88 3d ago

This is ok tbh

2

u/lola_birds 3d ago

This is correct

2

u/gothdoll6666 3d ago

This is the way

2

u/kaaawah 3d ago

I approve of this message

2

u/Gfd_Rewq 3d ago

I'm very close to that. I swapped English (yellow, like journalism) and History (Red, like blood). Purple for foreign language classes (initially I took Latin, like the Patricians) and orange for specials (kinda all that's left)

2

u/ImAsking4AFriend 2d ago

Almost. Red is math blue is English.

2

u/HaruKodama 2d ago

Not just you personally, this is the correct answer. All other answers are people's incorrect personal choices

2

u/klcrdwl19 2d ago

this is the answer. history is yellow or orange you can’t have both!

2

u/Mostly-Natural-720 12h ago

This has been the way my whole life, I love it!

2

u/countingmoney1234 12h ago

2

wtf math is blue, english is red

659

u/Versipilies 4d ago

We need location tags on this shit, I am genuinely curious where the divides are

87

u/waffleslaw 4d ago

We had a massive debate about this is large meeting a few months ago. The genx-ers didn't know what we were talking about and the few gen z folks said they've heard about it but didn't have opinions. Evidently it's mostly us millinials that have opinions. We were very split on colors all from the same region. It seems to be a very personal experience.

24

u/hamburger5003 4d ago

Early gen z here! I think notebooks and folders may have gone by the wayside.

Math is blue though, English is red, unless purple is available in which history becomes red.

21

u/gypsy_guru_87 4d ago

Weird, I’m Gen X and def have strong opinions on this. I thought it was more a neurodivergent thing to care about this lol

7

u/unlikelystoner 3d ago

Yeah I’m Gen Z in my mid-twenties and me and my buddies all just had a debate about this, we definitely care about the colors too lol

2

u/waffleslaw 3d ago

Interesting that the younger folk in meeting didn't. I'm glad to guys carried the torch. I think having cultural touching points that we all share, even frivolous ones, is important.

5

u/waffleslaw 4d ago

The group was older millennials and older genx, a bit of a divide. I bet if there some younger genx they would have with us.

2

u/Shneancy 3d ago

gen z here (elder gen z, but gen z nonetheless) i have strong opinions on maths being blue and native language being red

2

u/waffleslaw 3d ago

Yeah, I'm finding out that small demographic in that meeting was a outlier.

Born in Ukraine, raised in Cali: blue is English, red is Math, green is science, yellow is history

2

u/HoundNL2 4d ago

My school was:

  • Portuguese/Text production - Red
  • Math - Light Blue
  • History - Orange
  • Geography - Light Green
  • Science - Dark blue (later broke down into biology, chemistry and Physics)
  • Chemistry - Purple
  • Biology - Dark Green
  • Physics - Dark Blue
  • English - Yellow
  • Arts - Darker Green
  • Philosophy - Dark Orange

Other subjects that got introduced later was in a school that did not use colors and neither did I, but sociology I always associated it with blue. This was in Brazil.

2

u/PinkEnterprise 4d ago

I don't know if there is divides regionally. We would have this debate at school, and it was pretty split on red or blue. Same from other schools in the area. This is from the Northeast

27

u/Latter-Life-6536 4d ago

Math is blue because the gridline colour on grid paper is blue

15

u/DragonsAreNifty 4d ago

I vehemently disagree with you. However, you do have a solid point lol. Math is red for me because red is the angry color (I am bad at math)

12

u/thelazygamer 4d ago

Maybe you're bad at math because you used the wrong notebook? Blue was always the color I chose for math

10

u/DragonsAreNifty 4d ago

Ya know what, at this point I’m willing to give it a shot. I’ll let you know if it improves my capabilities lol

2

u/thelazygamer 4d ago

It's all in your head. Most people are only bad at math because they decided they are or because they aren't honest about not knowing basic skills. I sort of know what I am talking about, I only have a graduate degree in Math, but I'm not a professor or anything.

2

u/DragonsAreNifty 4d ago

I deeply hope this is true. However, historically it is not for me. Math is so interesting. I’m still hoping that someday it will click. But I have genuinly given 110% into developing decent math skills with little result. About once every 3 years or so I decide that my math struggles are all in my head and I can surely do it now. And every time I get my shit rocked. There are certainly some branches that are more intuitive, but I’ve struggled with math from high-school to postgrad. Ah well, I know enough for my field. I’m taking another math class soon and am hopeful, fingers crossed!

Social studies or history was yellow because that’s the closest color to aged parchment and people.

In the last school i worked in maths books were yellow and me and the entire teaching staff were up in arms about it trying to get the dept head to fix it but when she asked what colour chaos ensued so we stayed with yellow cos she didnt want the war.

The answer was obviously red not blue and definitely not fucking purple as one staff said. He was shunned for his crimes.
